An exceptionally fast turnaround enabled SHS Group to benefit by getting the product to market in record time. Alongside this, SHS found that, as the company was now using lighter plastic for the bottles, more could be put on pallets, reducing distribution and logistics costs. An added benefit to using plastic for this product has meant that new markets are opening up in foodservice, transport markets (especially aviation) and on-the-go. France’s market-leader in fresh olives, Croc’Frais, has selected multilayer barrier pots from RPC Bebo for its extensive product range.The 250ml pots are thermoformed in clear polypropylene, enabling the olives to be visible on shelf to maximise consumer appeal. A barrier layer of EVOH provides protection against oxygen ingress to optimise shelf life while maintaining product freshness.

With the wide variety of different recipes, Croc’Frais is currently labelling the pots but the option exists to personalise them with pack and lid printing by RPC Bebo in the future.

The lightweight pots and easy-open lids ensure maximum consumer convenience.

The pots are manufactured by RPC Bebo Deventer and supplied via RPC Bebo France.

Founded in 1998 and based near Chartres, Croc’Frais is part of the Mediterranean product specialist Olives & Co, whose other brands include Mille et un Sud, Maison Raymond, Le Marmiton and Marie Amelie. The company has a reputation for innovation across its end markets.

Schwarzkopf’s selection of the Ultra jar – available in sizes from 130ml to 1250ml – reaffi rms its suitability for hair styling products.

The fl exibility of RPC’s global presence and choice of regional sites in meeting the needs of individual customers have been ideally demonstrated by the relocation of production of the 250 ml bottle for Unilever’s Duschdas Liquid Soap from RPC Promens Industrial’s Theeßen site to the RPC Promens Consumer factory in Kutenholz.RPC Kutenholz offers the most suitable production location for the Duschdas bottle, thanks to its regional proximity to the fi lling plant, as well as the site’s particular knowledge of the personal care sector.

Close collaboration between the two factories ensured a smooth transfer of production, which took place at the start of 2016.

The Duschdas bottle is blow moulded in polypropylene and is marketed in a number of variants including Vitality, Delight, Refreshing, Protection & Hygiene, and Care & Hygiene.

The factory offers cleanroom manufacturing facilities for pharmaceutical and other high-hygiene applications, while its central location allows fast delivery to customers throughout both West and East Europe.

The proven PAL range is UN-certifi ed and suitable for a wide variety of liquids and chemicals, including hazardous and diffi cult-to-handle products. For food applications, the containers are Halal-certifi ed.

The wide range of sizes from fi ve to 40 litres – including a special 11 litre container not widely available elsewhere on the market – offers customers great fl exibility in fi nding a

pack tailored to their precise requirements. The containers are available in standard blue or transparent but can also be specifi ed in a variety of other colours for effective personalisation.

The containers offer easy handling and excellent functionality for the end-user and – another benefi t for customers – are supplied with closures to deliver a complete ‘one-stop’ solution.

SHADES OF GOLD FOR ANNIVERSARY PAINT PACKUsing its advanced In-Mould Labelling technology, RPC Superfos has produced a limited-edition 50th anniversary pack for French paint brand Cofabrill. Cofabrill indoor paint has been a favourite among French professional painters since its introduction by Zolpan in 1966. It is easy to apply, renders great coverage and has a shiny texture. To mark its anniversary, Zolpan decided to produce a limited edition pack in a golden SuperLift Extra container from RPC Superfos.

The company’s graphic design agency created beautiful artwork comprising a background of golden waves, but the test result from the pail with offset decoration did not deliver the desired look. RPC Superfos therefore suggested using In-Mould Labelling, where the Pantone colour system is replaced with metallic colours.

“We’re pleasantly surprised to see how well our anniversary pack in golden shades now looks thanks to the advanced In-Mould Labelling technique applied by RPC Superfos,” says Marion Masse, Communication Executive of Zolpan, which is part of the Cromology Group. “They’ve given us excellent advice and we’ve felt absolutely well guided throughout the project.

“The container looks magnifi cent and we really like the fi nal result. It’s an appropriate way of celebrating our golden anniversary with one of our most popular products.”

The 17.5 litre SuperLift Extra container is injection moulded in polypropylene. It features tamper evidence and a protective collar that safeguards the lid and prevents ovalisation of the container.

RPC Superfos provides the plastic containers for all of Zolpan’s water-based paint products.

TUB CHURNS OUT AWARDA bespoke butter tub from RPC Superfos has won an 'Award for Design Excellence' for a Norwegian food company for both its design and recyclability benefi ts. TINE, Norway's leading provider of branded food products, its subsidiary Fjordland and the design agency EGGS, were presented with the award by The Norwegian Centre for Design and Architecture.

The pack, whose introduction by TINE has seen a 65% increase in sales of the company’s spreadable butter and margarine products, was described by the award jury as ‘an impressive achievement’ and praised for meeting ‘all requirements for overall design.’ Among the features highlighted were the pack’s lid, which features an ergonomic tab for ease of opening, and the fact that the lid is the same for all product varieties, which entrails effi cient production with only a few changeovers.

Equally important, the pack no longer consists of cardboard, aluminium and plastic but is made from 100% recyclable plastic material, which greatly simplifi es the recycling process.

The injection moulded polypropylene tub is a thin wall pack (TWP) which offers excellent strength at lightweight, and also incorporates a protective light barrier, which safeguards the butter or margarine from the damage that light exposure can cause to fl avour and vitamin content.

Morten Aas, Leader of Research and Development for Packaging and Design at TINE, is delighted with the pack’s

success: "Functional and contemporary packaging plays a big part in our commercial success and we are pleased with the design award.

“Our choice of packaging was based on user surveys, which revealed that people are more inclined to recycle packaging when they can avoid sorting several different types of material at once, such as cardboard, aluminium foil and plastic. As such, we considered it essential to change to a single-material pack and we are satisfi ed to have opted for the solution from RPC Superfos."

The project also demonstrates RPC’s ability to provide a complete container and closure solution following the recent arrival of Global Closure Systems (GCS) into the group, who are supplying caps with silicone valves to WSP Spolem.

Inspired by traditional recipes, the new sauces – Garlic, American and Hamburger – boast a distinctive taste and an appetising aroma. Importantly, they do not contain preservatives. The Euro Squeeze bottle features a multilayer PP/EVOH/PP construction, which prevents oxygen ingress to deliver a long shelf life, while its squeezability provides easy dosing for maximum consumer convenience.

The launch of the new sauces follows the successful debuts of mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup from WSP Spolem in a 520ml Euro Squeeze bottle in 2015.

RPC Bebo Plastik’s pioneering in-mould label thermoforming (IML-T) technology has been recognised in the European Thermoforming Parts Competition 2016.The company’s IML-T tubs and lids took fi rst prize in the category ‘Thin Gauge – Food Packaging Applications’.

Among the many benefi ts highlighted by the judges were the wide label coverage that can be achieved including the stacking rim of the pack and the option of barrier protection through the use of multilayer sheet, all of which can be delivered using existing tools.

IML-T applies pre-printed labels to a container during the thermoforming process, meaning intricate, multi-coloured designs in up to eight colours can be incorporated to achieve a better level of fi nish and greater coverage than with direct printing. IML-T for lids allows a more precise label positioning than conventional off-mould labelling, and different lid weights can be produced from the same tooling.

The technology delivers a complete pack solution, with lightweight containers, high output lines and competitive tool costs that offer an excellent return on investment.

The European Thermoforming Parts Competition celebrates fi rst-class achievements in originality, creativity, mould complexity and technical ability to promote advanced design and developments in thermoformed applications. Established in 2006 by the European Thermoforming division of the Society of Plastics Engineers, the 2016 event took place at the European Thermoforming Conference in Sitges, Barcelona.

RPC Superfos supplies Shell EMEA with 20 litre containers from its UN Series, which are used for lubricants in Shell factories throughout Europe. The containers meet UN safety requirements and are designed for the transportation of sensitive goods.

Shell EMEA has standardised its Supplier Ranking according to some carefully selected criteria, many of which RPC Superfos came top in.

RPC PROMENS BELGIUM'S FLEXIBILITY RPC Promens Industrial Belgium is making its fi rst foray into the non-packaging sector with the manufacture of a stylish new lamp for the home, called the ‘Lily’.The Gent site has teamed up with Xala, a leading Belgian supplier of stylish and affordable products for the home and garden, who was in search of a blow moulding partner to produce its new lamp design.

Conceived by design agency Nuuv, the Lily resembles an old-fashioned oil lamp, with subtle curves and an elegant fi nger handle, making it an ideal addition to Xala’s range of simple, accessible, and distinctive products. RPC Promens worked with the agency to make some minor adjustments to ensure the design could be manufactured effectively.

The lamp is produced in HDPE, and weighs 111 grams without its electrical components. An important marketing tool is its ‘Made in Belgium’ label.

“This is the fi rst non-traditional product to be manufactured at our site and, as such, presented a challenge to our craftsmen, which they were quick to embrace,” comments RPC Promens business development manager Peter Slabbaert.

“The result is a beautiful and stylish lamp which we are sure will be the next must-have in Xala’s range.”
