HAWAII'S VOLCANO
MAUNA LOA by Joseph Vega
VOLCANOES
A volcano is formed when a mountain begins to
form a pool of molten rock going down below the surface of the earth. Then pressure begins to
build which causes volcanic eruptions.
HAWAII
Hawaii is part of North America and part of the
United States
As shown from this picture
of Hawaii, it is very miniature
compared to other states, but
Hawaii’s volcanos are beyond
spectacular.
MAUNA LOA’S HISTORY
Known as one of the largest mountains on Earth with a height of 13,679 feet above sea level with 3,100 feet bellow sea level and an extent of 75 miles. This volcano surprisingly keeps up more than half of the surface area of Hawaii and contains 2,035 square miles. Mauna Lao is the largest sub aerial volcano in both volume and mass. The volume of this mountain is 18,000 cubic miles.
Hawaii’s first eruption was in 1843 and 33 subsequences have been recorded ever since. Scientist have predicted an eruption in the future and Mauna Loa’s latest eruption was 1984, March-April. With all those eruptions, none of Mauna Loa’s with fatalities except for a small village in Hawaii lasting from 1926-1950.
MAUNA LOA FACTS
Mauna Loa in Hawaiian is called “Tall Mountain”. I can see why because of its height of 13,679 feet.
This volcano surprisingly receives snowfall in the winter but its kind of believable because of its high elevation.
Mauna Loa is known as a shield mountain witch is a gently sloping mountain produced from a large number of generally very fluid lava flows. An interesting fact about shield mountains is that they form on other planets including mars and its name is Olympus Mons.
Mauna Loa is the larges/most active volcano but not the most active volcano.

COMPARING MOUNTAINS
THE HISTORY AND FACTS OF HAWAII Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii and Honolulu is also the largest
city in Hawaii. Honolulu is on an island named Oahu. Hawaii’s second largest city is called Hilo. Hawaii owns 132 islands with 124 small ones and these islands were formed by volcanoes.
