Special Olympics – games and sports with focus on mentally challenged.

Paralympics – games and sports mainly for persons with locomotor disabilities.

Abilympics – vocational skills competitions for persons with all disabilities. The focus is to showcase the abilities not the disabilities. International Abilympics are held once in four years.

Worldwide three major organizations organize events for persons with disabilities :

The International Abilympics were held in 1981 in Japan

for the first time to commemorate the United Nations

International Year for Disabled Persons. The second, third,

fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth Abilympics were

held in Colombia, Hong Kong, Australia, Czech Republic,

India ,Japan and South Korea respectively.

The Abilympics in India were

introduced by Amar Jyoti Charitable

Trust. A six member Indian team led

by Dr. Uma Tuli participated in the

1st International Abilympics in 1981.

14 contestants participated in 5th

International Abilympics held in Prague

in 2000. India’s bid to host 6th

International Abilympics was accepted.

National Abilympic Association of India (NAAI) was formed at the behest of

Ministries of Human Resource Development &

Social Justice & Empowerment in 2001 and

continues to support the activities. The

headquarters of NAAI is at Amar Jyoti

Charitable Trust, Delhi. The activities of NAAI

are guided by a Governing Body.

Objectives of NAAI Discover, nurture and showcase the potential and talents of persons with disabilities and promote economic self-reliance. Sensitise and create awareness among government, the corporate sector and society at large about the productive skills of persons with disabilities. Ensure involvement of the government and the corporate sector in the economic upliftment of the disabled. Promote international friendship through exchange of knowledge and programmes.

Vice-presidents were appointed from

institutions/NGOs in five zones

having the required infrastructure to

spread the Abilympic movement in

the country. They conduct State/

district / regional competitions in

their respective zones.

Task – Dress Making - Basic

To cut, stitch and finish a A-line dress for a 3 yr. old child as per given measurements.

Evaluation Criteria :

Finishing (Hemming, Hooks etc.) 20

A person with any disability (40% and above).

He / She should be 15 years and above.

He / She can participate in a maximum of two contests if the date and time do not clash.

No outside person is permitted to assist the contestants in any way. In case a contestant needs some help due to his / her disability, the organisers will provide the necessary assistance

The underlying principle is to judge the contestants entirely

on professional merit and not on the measure of their

disability. No concession is made for severity of disability.

Inspection of tools or other equipment or material brought

by the contestants to ensure that it conforms to the

requirements of the contest and does not give anyone undue

advantage.

Award marks strictly in accordance with the evaluation

criteria mentioned in the event guidelines.

The role of Jury is to examine an appeal made

by an individual participant or leader of the

team against the result. The appeal is examined

by a Jury and the decision of the Jury is final.

As a part of preparations for selection of Indian team

for 6th IA, state, regional, and national abilympics were

organised.

Medal winners of the National Abilympics represented

India in the 6th International Abilympics held in India in

November 2003.

1400 participants from 33 countries participated

in 45 events. India won 30 medals (7 gold, 8

silver and 15 bronze). The success was possible

as a result of convergence of resources.

Amar Jyoti Charitable Trust was the co-ordinating agency for the 6th International Abilympics held in New Delhi. The event was sponsored by :

• Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment

• Ministry of Human Resource Development

• Government of NCT, Delhi

• Hong Kong Foundation and

• A large number of philanthropists and corporates

The District/State /Regional and National

Abilympics are regularly organised at different

locations of the country. The movement is

gathering momentum not just in India but

around the World and has the potential to bring

about changes which recognise the human rights

of persons with disabilities.
