Wine Run 2009—Here we go again Tony Megowan

Saturday morning dawned clear and cold as our adventure to the Central Coast Wine Country was about to begin. Our group of wino’s and lushes included yours truly (Head Wino In Charge) and my lovely wife Paula, Jim and Judy Purcell, Fred and Anne Lopez, Frank and Barbara LoMonaco, Dennis and Lynne Merenbach, Thore Edgren (we missed you Pia), Fred and Sharon Smith, Dennis & Sandy Higgins, Al & Mona Rotella, Fred Markley and Jackie, Linda Petersen, Ed Clerkin, and Jacques & Yuriko Bellesiles. We departed Goleta at 7:30 AM (sorry about that Barbara) for Paso Robles and our first winery. After driving the back roads of Paso Robles we arrived at Tablas Creek Vineyard for a tour and tasting. Our tour guide Steve told us all about the history of the winery, how it is farmed, and even showed us how to graft different varietals onto American rootstock. Afterwards it was into the winery for a lesson in wine-making and our favorite, wine tasting. We left Tablas Creek for a short drive to the beautiful grounds of Carmondy McKnight Estate Winery. This is a winery that must be seen to be believed. We settled in with Gregg, Bill, Sue, Phil, and Kathleen (the owner’s daughter) for a tasting of their wonderful hand crafted estate wines. Afterwards we retired to the grounds for a fantastic lunch by the lakes and trees of this magnificent winery. Upon leaving Carmondy McKnight we once again embarked on the back roads of Paso Robles to the east side and Sculpterra Winery and Vineyards and their magnificent Sculpture Garden. Kurt treated us to a tasting of their award winning wines. Along the way we misplaced Linda (tell Steve next time the car will be full of gas when we leave) who needed to stop and feed the Vette. After a few dropped cell phone calls and directions from Paula we found her and guided her to Sculpterra and a reunion with all of her drinking buddies. From Sculpterra it was on to our home for the evening and dinner at Bubba Bad to the Bone BBQ. As hard as we tried we could not convince Jim “Bullrider” Purcell to reenact his amazing demonstration of his mechanical bull riding skills. After an evening of good food, the mandatory alcoholic drinks (ask Barbara about her boot), and great friends it was off to bed. After a Sunday morning breakfast at Mclintocks (at least for those of us who think food is more important than sleep) we assembled in the parking lot for the second leg of our journey. Privacy Reminder Old Club Rosters should be shredded not just thrown in the trash when replaced.

After a missed turn by yours truly (I still say it was planned because the road we took was a lot of fun) we arrived unscathed and ready to resume our mission of ridding Paso Robles of all of their wine. First on the list was Bella Luna Estate Winery. This winery is owned and operated by Kevin Healey and Sherman Smoot. Sherm (our host) not only makes fan-tastic Italian style wines but also manages to race a highly modified Yak-11 at the Reno Air Races. I am inclined to believe we bought most of his remaining stock of Fighter Pilot Red (a tribute to his fallen comrades in Vietnam where he flew F-4’s for the Navy). If you like Italian wine you can’t go wrong here. It was once again onto the roads of Paso Robles to Dunning Vineyards. After a short jaunt down a dirt driveway (sorry Mr. Markley) we arrived at the winery. We were blessed to have the owners Robert and Jo-Ann Dunning as our hosts and after a short history we got down to the busi-ness of sampling their estate grown wines. Not only did we get to taste the normal compliment of wines we also got to sample their reserve wines and a Meritage that is usually for wine club members only.

After departing Dunning we again wound our way through the back roads of Paso Robles to Jada Vineyard. They gave us our own little room and Pam our hostess pro-ceeded to give us a history of the winery and then served us a sampling of their wines paired with different cheeses. The view from the room was nothing short of stunning and it was here we ended our journey with more food and good company. It was also here at Jada that Frank LoMonaco completed his membership to The Society of Red Wine Connoisseurs. Frank we welcome you. I would like to thank all those who joined Paula and I on this adventure and the winer-ies whose hospitality made this wonderful trip possible. I would also like to thank Paula for all of her help and also for supplying us with her wonderful Potato Salad.

As for next year? Mark your calendars for April 17th and 18th when we will once again venture into the won-derful Central Coast Wine Country and sample the fine wines it has to offer. The theme you ask? Well it will be Old and New. We will revisit some old friends and make some new friends.
