uring the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s we becamesessed with the uture, what it looked like,

hat dangers it would bring, how it wouldange us and how we could get there evenore quickly. We wanted everything aster, gger, newer and with this yearning to astrward came an appreciation o technologyer tried and trusted methods, a love o tomation over personalization and a boommass produced luxuries which sadly

ocated a traditional market in authenticecialist goods. Having sated our appetitesr space age gadgets, minimalistvironments and luxury de ned by logoere has been a slow but steady return incent years to an appreciation or thethentic, the specialist and the rare.

is shi t in values coincided beauti ully withre-birth o May air and more particularly,Connaught on Carlos Place, Londons

endary home o authenticity and quality, lace at once buzzing with the palpableergy (and money!) o the new May aird protecting and promoting an enviableritage in obsessive attention to detail, ovenance and service.

The Connaught tackled what would seeman impossible task, to retain exemplarytraditional service, a central location inthe bit o May air that matters and thatConnaught eeling you cant put your ngeron - like an established country house, withthe most charming host, slap bang in themiddle o the city. All o this was combinedwith the best contemporary design, a braveand brilliant art buyer and some o theyoungest, hottest talent around, rom theMichelin-starred Hlne Darroze in thekitchen to the young international teamo ront o house managers. Far rom beingintimidated by the history, they haveembraced the best o its past and seamlesslycombined it with an energy and e ciencywhich is bang up to date.

May air is no stranger to excellence and haslong been home to the specialist, Allens o May air is the oldest butcher in the district, established in 1830 and is still a mark o exemplary quality, although they are nowmore likely to be selling let to a undmanager than quail to the kitchen maid.

More and more o us are now engaged inthe pleasurable pursuit o excellence, the re ned editing o experience, seekingout the very best and perhaps moreimportantly wanting to evaluate experiences

or ourselves and understand why we thinksomething is superior. Its perhaps no surprisethen that these ew streets in May air, known locally as May air Village haveattracted some o the most desirableinternational brands. We can credit Marc

Jacobs with putting Mount Street back onthe map as a home to desirable, unique

boutiques and since its launch in 2007,Mount Street and Carlos Place have beentrans ormed with Balenciaga, Diane vonFurstenberg, Louboutin, Lanvin,Wunderkind and most recently Goyardmoving in. One can still shop or guns, game and badger brushes or your bristlesthanks to James Purdey and sons andThomas Goode.

At the heart o this May air Village is theConnaught, which promotes the age oldquestion, which came rst the chicken orthe egg?, Carlos Place or the Connaught?

No matter, however they came about its amarriage made in heaven. With thecon dence o a business rooted in the pastbut with a very clear vision o the uture theConnaught has made over their butlerservice or the 21st Century. Their butlerscan advise on anything rom styling toskincare, IT to high tea and each o themhas been trained by John Lobb to providethe best shoe shine in London.

This ocus on the personal and re-thinkingwhat really matters today extends throughthe hotel and is even refected in theprovenance o the produce used in thehotels restaurants and bars. Explore themenus and you will nd a delight ulselection o jams produced by Frenchmaker Christine Ferber and exquisitebrandy made with artisan methods byHlne Darrozes ather.

The Connaught is typically modest whenpushed on this approach, they simply statethat their guests are very special, asconnoisseurs o luxury they demandauthentic knowledge, a superior experienceand personalization where possible. It is thisthat they believe has driven the renaissanceo the expert. A ter an a ternoon spentpeople watching in the Coburg bar I canonly agree, the people they are catering orare a rare breed, an exciting mix, rarely seentogether anywhere else, a kind o big gamepark o London li e, you can wander in andwitness the big ve ( ashion, art, politics, money and society) clearly delighting in anexperience which blends the best o the oldand the best o the new. The renaissance o the Connaught refects a wider trend, areturn to the expertise, dedication andquality or which May air has always beenrenowned. Long live authentic luxury!
