PASTOR MIKE’S MUSTARD SEEDS...

Pastor Mike’s Mustard Seed will resume next month. He had to gone out of town due to a family medical emergency and was not able to write his article.

MAYHEW CBC’S 90TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION September 10, 2017

For the Lord is good and his love endures forever, his faithfulness continues through all generations.” Psalm 100:5

Praise and Glory goes to our Great God for this special time of fellowship and celebration. People came from all over, including out of state. Over 200 people came to honor the long and very special history of this church, to reminisce about the founding years, to recall the challenges and hard times, the accom-plishments, the plans for the future, and all the years in between. The Lord has been with the people of this church from the beginning. After all, Mayhew CBC doesn’t belong to us, it belongs to Jesus Christ.

An early dinner was held at Brookfields on Saturday. It was wonderful for people to be able to get

back together and spend time with each other again. On Sunday, there was a morning service, followed by lunch, then an afternoon celebration service. At

the morning service, Luanne Schnase gave a superb Children’s Message. Meet and Greet time was amazing as so many people wanted to greet friends they hadn’t seen in a long time. Pastor Barry Deguchi, who had flown in from LA with his family, gave a powerful message which touched all of our hearts. He then asked Pastor Mike to share some of the exciting plans coming up soon. The closing song was extra special. “We Are One Body” was sung by Hannah, Lillian, Andorful, Kojo, and Rosa. It was sung in five languages (English, Japanese, French, Fante, Spanish). There were several solo parts. Great job, everyone, and Becca for putting it all together!

Lunch was totally awesome! There was enough food for an army, and navy, and air force! After 200+

people went through, there was still food and desserts left. Thank you to everyone who provided. The special 90th Anniversary Celebration Service began after lunch. Stuart Satow did a great job as the

MC. He first gave recognition to the pastors and their wives who were in attendance, including Pastor Barry Deguchi, Pastor Scott Kawamura, Pastor Steve Curran, Pastor Curtis Yee’s wife, and Pastor Mike Schnase.

Their wives were presented with lovely corsages. A corsage was also given to our oldest founding member, Bernice Ouye, 99 years old, who received a standing ovation! Thank you Lillian and Golden West Floral for providing the corsages.

There was an amazing presentation of God’s Colors! One by one, five people came up. Each

took a glass of colored sand and poured it into a beautiful clear goblet. Red, blue, yellow, purple and green. As the various colors spread out on top of each other they created a beautiful ribbon effect, symbolizing the many cultures within Mayhew CBC. As Pastor Mike had previously described to us, we are a Reflection of Heaven itself.

A video was then shown. Lots of work had gone into preparing this beautiful history. Follow-

ing that were Memories offered by Kiyo Sato, Jodi King (from her and George Sato), and Colleen Lan-caster. These were amazing testimonies about the history of the church as well as why Mayhew CBC is such a wonderful place to worship. Stuart Satow then read a letter from Gerald and Phyllis Peter-sen who were unable to attend. Following that, Pastor Scott Kawamura of Xaris Church delivered a heartfelt, reflective and compelling message.

During closing remarks by Anne Chapman, she gave her personal testimony as to why Mayhew

CBC is so special to her, thanked everyone who attended and those who had worked so hard to make this event a tremendous success. She concluded by reading Diane Sarbacher’s testimony as to why she made Mayhew CBC her home.

Throughout the entire day, one message was repeated in many forms: We are One Body in

Jesus Christ. (DVDs of the services, including the videos, will be available for purchase at $5 each. Please

contact the office if you wish to place an order.)

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL WHO WORKED SO HARD TO MAKE THE 90TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION A SUCCESS For many months, a host of people worked tirelessly on so many aspects of this exciting event. The 90th Anniversary Planning Committee was comprised of Miriam Sheppard, Valerie Natsuhara, Hannah Guro, Colleen Lancaster, Erin Takechi, and Florene LaBlanc. Pastor Mike and Anne Chapman were ex officio. Many others who participated were Ocille Perry (hospitality), Kojo Gaisie (Diaconate), Dave Timmerman (Trustees) and Derrick Dietz (new signs). Now, that doesn’t even include all the people who have been working on many physical projects, which you have been hearing about for several months. The Committee put together a wonderful program and coordinated with all those who were to par-ticipate in all aspects. Thank you all so much! So many people brought delicious food. Easels were place in front of each building and the Deguchi Garden. Each had a description of the history and pictures. Historical pictures were also available for viewing in the first room of Issei Hall. Tamaryn Crossman updated the Wall of Honor in Satow Hall. Well done, Tammy! Derrick and Nella Dietz made new signs for all the church buildings, as well as a master sign as people enter the parking lot. Doug and Pastor worked tirelessly for months on landscaping, electrical, etc. A host of other people helped as well. Everyone was determined to have green grass in the quad area by the 90th celebration, and it did come to pass! One of many projects was to mount the huge wooden cross in the ground in front of Issei Hall. That was accomplished. Then, the morning of the celebration, Bob Simms thought of putting a purple cloth on it and a crown of thorns. Off he went for home to get the crown of thorns, while Florene provided her purple curtains which were draped around the cross.

Jim Schnase worked for several month to pressure wash all of the concrete, including the parking strips and light poles, before the 90th celebration. He finished a few days before and it looks beautiful, like new concrete has just been poured! Thank you so much!

Yattiyr School also helped with many of the yard projects. The kids are hard-working and amazing! Last, but certainly not least, some of the women worked in the kitchen all morning and didn’t get to

see the first service at all. Thank you for giving of yourselves! The Lord was most certainly with each aspect of this wonderful celebration and tribute!

THANK YOU AND FAREWELL TO DAVE TIMMERMAN

Dave is leaving us for a Surprise! That’s right. He is moving to a town called Surprise in Ari-zona to be with his son who has acquired a job there. He bought a house there and sold his place here. Both will close at the same time, so he has to be out by the end of September and can move in October 1. This is truly a “surprise” to all of us and to him as well. It all happened so fast. Dave has been with us for five years. He says that when he first came into the church, he only planned to sit in the back and listen, and not get involved in anything. Three days later a group of us took him to dinner. Everything changed! He started to get involved in all sorts of church projects and activities. After a while, he became a Trustee, and last year he was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees where he still serves until September 25th. It has been such a pleasure working with Dave. He has been a great Cabinet member as well. He has done so much for this church including helping to negotiate a better security contract, pur-chasing all sorts of supplies to fix and maintain the grounds and buildings, fielding never-ending calls and questions, writing Torch articles, and of course Cooking! Dave graduated from Cordon Bleu Col-lege of Culinary Arts and has he ever spoiled lots of people here at the church! He also has been a favorite with the kids at the school. Now, I want to share a little story. Some of you have heard me call him “Papa.” It seems one night a few years ago a group of us took some new parishioners out to dinner. While there, the wait-ress leaned over to Dave and asked him if I was his daughter! It must have been really dark in there that night!! From then on I have called him Papa, and he tells me to watch out, that I’m not too old to spank! Dave has an accelerated sense of humor and if you’ve ever been around when he and Doug are together, you’d have to believe they were fighting! But not so, just two guys turning hard work into lots of fun. Dave’s last day with us will be Sunday, September 24. Thanks for everything, Dave. God speed, and we will miss you. Submitted by Anne Chapman Katherena, Steven and staff of Yattiyr School held a Surprise Smoothie and Goodies Party after church to thank Dave for all he has done and for being the wonderful guy that he is. Everyone around the room had an opportunity to say something. People shared wonderful feelings, of course there were some Roasts, and then prayer. Thank you, Yattiyr School for being so thoughtful! The bond between you and Dave will endure forever. If you wish to keep in touch with Dave, his phone number is (916) 613-6334, email is [email protected]. His new address is 15014 W. Wethersfield Rd., Surprise, Arizona 85379.

mencing September 25, 2017. Congratulations, Margaret! You will be a great Chair and member of the Cabinet.

NEW APPOINTMENT BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Congratulations to Colleen Lancaster who has been appointed to the Board of

POLITICS

This is a reminder to refrain from bringing up or discussing politics while in a church ministry setting such as Bible study, Sunday School, sewing groups, fellowship events, workdays, etc. There are many diverse views within the church and such a topic can be very uncomfortable and cause hard feelings, regardless of which side a person is on. It is the responsibility of each parishioner to adhere to this policy and to assist in halting any discussion of politics should it occur in a group setting. This church is about Unity of the Spirit and there is no room for topics that divide. Thank you for your coop-eration. Anne Chapman, Moderator

MAYHEW CBC LOSES MAY TAKEUCHI Our beloved May went to be with Jesus on August 25, 2017. A beautiful memorial service was held on September 16. May was a lifelong and dedicated member of Mayhew CBC. She sang in the choir for many years and was active in ABWM. She was known for her sincerity, kindness and love. May was born and raised in Sacramento where she lived all her life. While in high school, she was relocated with her family under Executive Order 9066 to the camp at Poston, Arizona where she was interned during World War II. Following that she earned a degree and became a licensed regis-tered nurse. She married Duke in 1947 and had three children, Susan, Doug and Kevin. May lived a full and beautiful life – she loved her family and God, her church and friends. Her kind and loving spirit will remain with us always. For over 50 years, the following prayer hung on the wall next to May’s bed:

Just for Today

Lord for tomorrow and its needs I do not pray;

Keep me, my God, from stain of sin, Just for today.

Now, set a seal upon my lips,

For this I pray; Keep me from wrong or idle words,

Just for today.

Let me be slow To do my will,

Prompt to obey, And keep me,

guide me, use me, Lord, Just for Today.

“The Lord shall guide thee continually.” ISA. 58:11

BIBLE QUESTION FOR OCTOBER CHRIST IN YOU, THE HOPE OF GLORY - We hear and repeat this many Sundays with Kojo and Andorful. Where is this found in the Bible and what does Paul say before or after this phrase?

ANSWER TO BIBLE QUESTION Paul said the following in a letter to the Colossians: “Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God; Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory; Whom we preach, warning every man in all wisdom; that we may pre-sent every man perfect in Christ Jesus: Whereunto I also labour, striving according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.” Colossians 1:25-29

HARVEST FESTIVAL Our annual community outreach to the families in the area is the annual Harvest Festival. It’s on Tuesday, October 31st from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, rain or shine. We have games, food and end the evening with Trunk or Treat. What can you do to help make this event a success? Volunteer your time to help with our largest outreach event of the year. This is a time where we are able to make one-on-one contact with people in our neighborhood and share God’s word with them at the Trunk or Treat event. About 200 people attended last year and we hope to have many more this year. We need lots of help with the following: Decorating the grounds, including stringing lots of lights, putting up our huge

Lighted Welcome sign, etc. Greeting people as they come in and passing out information. Helping with the Cake Walk (cupcakes and cookies this year) and assisting with one of our games. Helping in the kitchen and at the food table. Donating wrapped candy, cupcakes and cookies. Setting up and cleaning up. Participating in the Trunk or Treat with your car/truck. We need as many of your cars/vehicles as possible to help spread the Gospel. Decorate your

trunks or pickup beds with a biblical theme and Bible verses. As families and children come by, they read the verse(s) and learn about Jesus, and then receive candy. This has been extremely well re-ceived and for some people it is the first time they have heard the Word. Trunk or Treat runs from 7:00-7:30 p.m. There is a prize for the trunk with the best Bible message.

On Sunday October 1st, there is going to be a short meeting after services for people who are

interested in volunteering their time to make this event a success. If you have any questions, you can contact Hannah Guro at 916-947-6345.

During the month of October we will be accepting candy donations which we use as prizes for

our games and to pass out at our Trunk or Treat. Thank you. Hannah Guro, Harvest Festival Coordinator

IN THE EYE OF THE STORM Although we’ve been seeing a lot of news coverage and pictures of the devastation of the recent hur-ricanes and feel for the victims, it isn’t every day that we come across a victim who is a relative of one of our own parishioners. Becca’s first cousin, Susanna, and her husband Aaron, had just moved from Tulsa to Mey-ersville, near Houston, Texas, a few weeks before Hurricane Harvey hit. Oh, they had flood insurance alright; however, it didn’t take effect for 30 days and they had been in their home only a few weeks! An application to FEMA still has not been processed “because they had flood insurance,” notwithstanding that it didn’t count!

This little family faced a surge of several feet of water in their neighborhood, fled their house on foot, carrying their three little dogs and had to wade in waist-deep water to try to find shelter and be res-cued.

The insides of the house is destroyed, and as you can see from the picture, they lost all their belong-

ings as well as their car, which the insurance coverage leaves them thousands short to buy a replacement vehicle. Although they are trying to find another place to live, housing is very difficult to come by now. They are still in survival mode and completely exhausted. They have requested prayer for supernatural strength and peace for Aaron’s soul as he is positive and strong but burned out doing twice his normal work shifts and trying to deal with the aftermath of the personal devastation. They request prayer for Aaron’s dad in Indiana who just had heart surgery last week and they can’t leave to go see him. Please pray for the house and car situations and a miracle to receive a FEMA claim, even if small.

We at Mayhew CBC are great prayer warriors; however, we can go a step further. We can take up a

collection that would go directly to the family from us. If you would like to be a part of this, checks can be made out to Mayhew CBC, and in the notation space, indicate “Becca’s Family – Hurricane Fund.” Checks can be put in the normal offering or mailed to Mayhew Community Baptist Church, 3401 Routier Rd., Sacra-mento, CA 95827.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2

The Healing Power of the Lord

My sister, Patty Downs, started having pain issues with her gum about three years ago.

She kept going to her doctor and he would tell her that everything was just fine. After

two years of the same routine, she finally said enough is enough and decided to go to

her dentist. The dentist took one look at her gum and decided to do a biopsy. The

news was not good. She had cancer in her gum.

After several tests, they referred her to UC Davis in Sacramento. They ran more tests

and confirmed that it was Stage 4 cancer. She was scheduled for surgery two weeks

later in January of this year.

The surgery was extensive. They had to remove her jaw bone from the ear to the mid-

dle of her chin and replace it with three pieces of bone taken from her leg. They also

had to reconstruct her gum by taking skin from the leg. They removed over 30 lymph

nodes that didn’t look good.

Test came back showing that two of the lymph nodes had an aggressive type of cancer.

They were concerned that it could have spread to other places in her body. Because of

the aggressive cancer she then had to go through not only radiation but chemotherapy.

After much prayer from our prayer team and the church and many others praying, we

just got news that she is completely cancer free. All of her tests have come back with

not a trace of cancer anywhere in her body.

This is truly a miracle from our wonderful Lord. God is always good no matter the out-

come but when you see a miracle like this you understand His mighty power.

In conclusion, I just wanted to thank all of those faithful prayer warriors that prayed for

Patty and those that took her back and forth to appointments. It was a long hard road

for them and her but you were a true blessing for her and our family.

Margaret Michels

ROBIN AND BONNIE TIE THE KNOT

It’s Official! After many months of planning, Robin and Bonnie’s wedding took

place Saturday, Sept. 23, at Bonnie’s church, St. Ignatius. It was a beautiful ceremony.

There was a huge attendance with people from Bonnie’s church, Mayhew CBC, the Old

Timers Radio Club where Robin is President and the Widowed Persons’ Association

where they met. In the early evening there was a dinner reception at Mission Oaks

Community Center. The couple is so happy and it is such a blessing to be part of this.

Congratulations to both of you, Robin and Bonnie!

NEWS AND UPDATES (Pictures on Following Pages)

You’ve been seeing a lot of pictures of what’s happening with the church grounds. Here’s the latest: It is amazing to see green grass in the quad area. While the project of trenching, disking, rototilling, digging, hauling river rocks, raking, installing the sprinkler systems and planting, the temperature was stuck at 100-110 degrees. Despite that, lots of grass germinated and is growing! God is Good! The area has just been overseeded with more permanent grass and then there will be weed control. So many sprinkler line breaks have been found and repaired. There are still a few more breaks to fix along with a wiring problem for the timer along Ellenwood. More lines will then be laid along Routier Road. After the trenches are filled in, we’ll be rototilling again and planting. There are four miniature palm trees in the areas of the parking lots. All have been donated. Between adjusting to being transplanted and the challenge the Trustees faced as to how much to water them, they initially started looking bad. Things have stabilized now. Three of them have lots of new growth that sprang up in the middle. It happened very suddenly for each tree! The fourth one looks great and it is anticipated new growth will appear soon. Another sewer problem cropped up which affected the bathrooms in the Sanctuary and clogged the main line. The last time this happened, Pastor rented a commercial snake early in the morning, un-plugged everything and returned it before anyone got to the church that morning. This time, how-ever, it was on a Saturday when Dave got a call later in the day. Pastor was performing a wedding so could not be contacted to pick up a big snake. It would have been too late after that and the next morning was a Sunday. Dave called all over and finally located a firm to come out that night and fix it. Instead of about $60 when Pastor did it, it cost $235. Thanks to Dave’s persistence, it was less than another quote of $400. The line has been a challenge for years and the Trustees are looking into a more permanent solution for if/when this happens again. The portable toilets were in the parking lot for some time. The firm had been called numerous times to ask that they be picked up. Regardless, we are only being charged for one day.

AWANA BEGINS TUESDAY, OCTOBER 3 It’s hard to believe that summer is over and we’re heading into fall. The new AWANA season starts soon and runs through mid-May (except holidays). The time is 6:30-8:05 p.m. Volunteers are still needed to help the kids learn their verses and help with the games. It is truly rewarding and so much fun! Help is especially needed while the kids learn their verses. This occurs during the first 30 minutes. If you would like to know more, or wish to volunteer, please contact Nella Schnase (539) 736-6325. We’re very happy to have Margaret back helping after her long stent of going to school.
