It is with heavy hearts that the A Taste of Matarangi festival team has issued the following press release to the Matarangi Beach Paper.

“Our world is facing extraordinary challenges right now and those opportunities when we gather and connect as a community are very precious. With continued restrictions on gatherings and events and the uncertainty of how long the issues with Covid-19 will last the committee for the A Taste of Matarangi festival have made the decision to cancel the 2021 festival.

The committee which is made up of volunteers take months to plan & prepare for the festival which

is why they are having to make the decision now. They are hugely proud of the event but the very real possibility is that they cannot host this event within the restrictions or potential changes around public events. The committee have found it a difficult decision to make knowing that it will be a huge disappointment to everyone involved.

We are incredibly grateful to all the sponsors, artists, stall vendors, volunteers and community groups whose support enables us to deliver this very successful event. We also feel for our local business community who will be impacted by this cancellation.

To our loyal and passionate audiences, when we

come through the challenges of Covid-19 we will once again be ready to come together as a community to celebrate another festival with you, when the time is right. We thank you for your support and understanding!

Your Festival Team.”

As one of the silver sponsors for the festival, the MBP knows that this was an extremely difficult decision that the organising committee had to make. There will be many loyal supporters who will be disappointed to learn that the 2021 festival will not be going ahead as was the 2020 event due to the Covid-19 lockdown. This has followed the decision a couple of weeks ago by the organisers of the Tairua Food and Wine Festival to also cancel their 2020 event, just before New Year.

The first festival which started in 2013 has grown to be a regular event on the Coromandel calendar, with initial attendance of around 800 rising to 2500 at the seventh festival held in 2019. Bronwyn Ririnui, a key part of the first festival in 2013, says, “It takes a dedicated team to pull off a festival that size for the first time. It began as an idea thrown around over a few drinks by community minded people and with their skills and enthusiasm has turned into a Matarangi institution.”

Although Bronwyn admits they started with nothing the first year, attendance was better than expected and funds were raised to support the Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust with the build of the helicopter hanger in Whitianga. It was a brave move. “We went into the event not even knowing if we would cover the expenses,” says one of the original organising team, Maureen Moss.

Since then the festival has continued to raise much needed funds for groups that are important to our community. In total the festival has donated $91,000 to groups which has included the Coromandel Rescue Helicopter Trust, the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter, Kuaotunu Land Search and Rescue, Te Rerenga School, Mercury Bay Community Patrol and Project Kiwi Kuaotunu.

Some of the original committee, Maureen Moss, Kerre Baker and Bronwyn Ririnui are still on board with the addition of Mary Kedzlie and Danielle Threadgold making up the current committee. “It’s been a major task each year to put this event together, but with such an amazing organising committee, fantastic sponsors and local volunteers, it has been a lot of fun”, says Bronwyn. .” The purpose of A Taste of Matarangi has always been to hold a successful community event focussing on preserving the uniqueness of the Coromandel, enhancing social well-being and bringing economic benefits to the community and wider region. It certainly has achieved that by raising our community profile, raising funds and attracting visitors and investment to the region. Every year people comment on the fabulous festival weather. “We have been very fortunate”, says Bronwyn, “I remember that first year where the forecast was for thunder and rain, but just as the festival started the rain stopped, the sun came out and the day remained fine.”

We are sure Bronwyn, that the sun will shine once again on our wonderful festival and we will enjoy another FABULOUS DAY OF FOOD, WINE AND MUSIC BY THE BEACH. We look forward to that!

The School BellOn Wednesday September 23rd we held our first STEAM Festival with an open afternoon whereby caregivers could wander around the classrooms and check out the learning that the children had been doing for their STEAM projects over the past few weeks. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics and there were a variety of interesting and exciting projects for our visitors to see and hear about. At the same time the annual Scholastic Book Fair organised by parent Claire Veevers was held. Thank you Claire for your wonderful effort.

A big congratulations to Ellie Mikkelsen who came 2nd in the Y7&8 Thames Valley-Coromandel Speech Final at Parawai School in Thames recently and to Isabella Comer who came third in the Year 5&6 final. Way to go girls! This was a great achievement and we are very proud of you!

Pictured is Isabella Comer and Ellie Mikkelsen with Mrs Vicki Sephton from Coromandel who judged our school competition.

The Te Rerenga School community is absolutely delighted with the response they have received about the expansion of the school orchard in memory of former principal Anna Yates.

Donations of over $2500 have been given so far to purchase the trees and last weekend a working bee with more than twenty-five parents and teachers was held at the school for the planting. Nashi, peach, nectarine, plumcott, olive and macadamia trees were planted and even more will be added such as apple trees. In addition, a variety of other plants including natives were planted as part of the orchard and garden design.

It was Anna’s vision to have a thriving orchard where the children could just pick the fruit from the trees while playing there. “Anna started to develop the orchard about four years ago, firstly planting pear and citrus trees and from there it has just evolved,” said Cheryl Darling, Te Rerenga School Office Administrator.

It is planned that when the trees have settled in a bit more and the landscaping is finished there will be a picnic in the orchard, celebrating Anna’s legacy to the school. A memorial seat and arbour is also planned, where people can go and quietly reflect. “We are looking forward to the next few weeks to see the blossoms of some of the fruit trees coming into flower,” said Mary Kedzlie, Te Rerenga Principal. Anna’s family is thrilled by this project which has been masterminded by BOT member Paula Williams. Anna’s father Colin Yates remembers being enlisted by his daughter to drive over to Frankton School in Hamilton one weekend, to pick up a trailer load of pear trees. They were the first trees to be planted and Anna’s husband, Darrell Adshead said that Anna would be rapt “that her vision is really coming to fruition,” smiling at his pun!

Anna’s Orchard is underwayThe school has recently adopted a star in memory of former principal Anna Yates. It is part of the constellation Aquila and was chosen as a star that can be seen in the sky over the Coromandel Peninsula at this time of the year.

Aquila is the 22nd largest constellation in the night sky and is visible during winter and spring.

A word from our Board Chairwoman Rekha Giri-Percival“Summer is on its way and I couldn’t be more excited to see more of this wonderful sunshine. I am pleased that construction of the new skate park in Whitianga started last month. Over the coming weeks our Council will be doing routine maintenance on the access road to and from the Matarangi Boat Ramp. They will also be clearing sediment from the ramp launching area. The dredging will happen at low tide and there may be delays to using both the access road and boat ramp however they will remain open to the public at all times.”[email protected]

News from Thames-Coromandel District Council October, 2020

It’s a consultation-a-thonWe’ve been reviewing and updating several strategies, policies and a bylaw and we want your feedback to make sure we get it right.

Water Demand Strategy

Gambling Policy

$$

$

$$

TCDC.GOVT.nz/waterdemandstrategy

• Last year people in our district spent $10.6 million on gaming machines;

• Our district has the second-highest spend on gaming machines in the country and has a machine to adult ratio more than twice the national average;

• Since the current policy was adopted in 2015, venues and machine numbers have fallen but the amount spent on gaming machines has continued to rise;

• We’re proposing to continue with our ‘sinking-lid’ approach which means that no new gaming venues or machines can be established in the district, and that as gaming venues close, they can’t be replaced;

• The dra policy also seeks to include TAB venues in the sinking-lid approach. The current policy allows new TAB venues as well as the merger of existing gaming venues.

Consultation on the strategy runs through to Friday 19 October.

Significance & Engagement Policy

• This Policy is used by our sta to determine when and how to consult on a proposal.

• It also provides clarity to our communities on what proposals they can expect to be consulted on.

• One change proposed in the dra policy is to raise the dollar amount for an activity to be classi ed as signi cant from $1 million to $5 million.

Consultation on the policy runs until Friday 19 October.

Shoreline Management PlansA Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) Committee was formed as a standing committee of Council last month to provide management of the Shoreline Management Plan process. For more information visit tcdc.govt.nz.coastal

Dogs are restricted on the beach in some areas from 9am – 6pm on all holiday weekends, and from Labour Weekend to 1 March dogs are now prohibited in some areas. If you're in doubt about when and where you can walk your dog, keep an eye out for signs and maps, pop into one of our Council service centres or head to our website tcdc.govt.nz/dogrules

The main issues we face with our water supplies are:

• Huge in¦ ux of summer visitors - Peak demand can be 3-4 times higher than average use.

• Dealing with weather, like drought conditions, limiting fresh water supplies. Last summer we had the worst drought in the country since the 1950s, and we are anticipating another dry summer coming up.

• Water loss (through leaks) in older supply pipe networks

The strategy will help us make decisions on the best tools we can use to manage these issues, for example investigating installing more water meters because they track usage and can detect leaks;

Consultation runs until Friday 30 October.

Farewell Rhys & Hilary

After 10 years of busy service to the Matarangi community during their retirement Hilary Falconer and Rhys Mathias are moving on to Omokoroa to be nearer to family.

After buying a bach in Kowhai Ave in 2003 they moved in permanently in 2010 after two years travelling round Australia in a caravan. Their bach seemed big at the time! Later they moved into a larger house on The Fairway where they have lived for the last 6 years.

“We got jobs cleaning the Villas the week we came back from Oz and Rhys has worked part time in the Golf shop since 2012. We also packed kiwifruit, picked macadamias and worked at The Warehouse - it was the GFC and we needed the money!!” said Hilary. “We also did the Census twice which meant we knew every road in Matarangi and met lots of people!” Rhys volunteered on the golf course and helped organise many tournaments as well as writing the golf reports as The Fairway for the Matarangi Beach Paper for many years. Hilary was on A Taste of Matarangi committee and roped Rhys in as a volunteer.

Hilary was able to bring her skills and experience as an Arts sector administrator to the benefit of the Coromandel when she moved here a decade ago. “I got involved in the newly formed Creative Mercury Bay then helped develop the TCDC Arts Strategy which led to the formation of Creative Coromandel He Mana Toi Moehau Trust,” recollects Hilary. “I also helped promote the 10 Artists collective in Kuaotunu.”

Hilary got herself on the Matarangi Ratepayers Association when she discovered that it was an all male committee. “That’s just not right in this day and age,” she protests. “This was an interesting time in the development of Matarangi with the transfer of ownership of the The Dunes Golf Club from private ownership to a consortium of local owners and the setting up of the Matarangi Community Trust. Rhys and Hilary were both on the steering committee which helped plan the initial organisation of The Dunes Golf and Community Club. They also instigated The Chase Quiz Nights at The Dunes in 2018 and this year as fundraisers for the club.

Thank you Rhys and Hilary for ten years of packed community service to the people of Matarangi.

The Eastern Rosella is back stealing fruit in Matarangi again. The colourful bird, an introduced species in the early 1900’s is pretty indeed but as an introduced species is now common over much of the North Island, and has a smaller population down South.

The wee fellow pictured on Page 9 had flown into a car window and was in a bad shape when it was taken to the Kuaotunu Bird Rescue Trust and was not expected to live. Placed into the wonderful care of Annemeike Kregting he was given some pain relief, fluids, and placed in a warm critical care incubator to recover in it was really a scenario of wait and see.

Annemeike kept the medication going over the initial hours and carefully gave the bird some fruit puree. Given anything per mouth is tricky in these parrot birds because of their sharp bite, big tongue, and therefore inability to see where you are going with the tube.

Anyway some improvement in the bird’s state of health was showing the second day and he was soon able to hold himself up and steady. The rest of the week was then all about slowly increasing his food, continuation of medication, and finally offering some fruit and nuts to encouraging it to eat.

To make him comfortable some branches were added to the incubator for him to sit on as well as hiding some food for him to find later on. Birds depending on the species can take a long time to eat in captivity. Generally they don’t recognize strange food on a plate.

By day four he was ready to go into a bigger environment and had proved that he could fly and look after himself. Annemeieke let the door open the next day and he whooshed passed her in a hurry. Things to do and places to go!

KBRT has been busy over the Covid period. Initially quiet in the lockdown period, but when people started to move about, the birds started coming back in. And really who is not fond of our beautiful green, not-so-smart, sometimes drunk bird of the year, the Kereru (2018)?

This year the KBRT has admitted 44 kereru so far, all with significant impact injuries from flying into windows or cars. These birds often top the scales at 750grams and that is a serious bang on your window. Nearly always they will have sustained internal injuries and need to come into care. Most of those admitted were X-rayed as their injuries can easily be hidden and undetected on the outside. Shoulder fractures, broken collarbones, internal bleeding and spilt crops are some of the more serious injuries we have seen. If they survive the first night it could be still some take weeks for them to recover following appropriate treatment and housing. To cope with the numbers KBRT need to be careful not to mix them up and identified each of them by fitting them with a NZ Certified Band if they were releasable or simply a bit of nail polish on their claw so we didn’t confuse them with their room-mates.

A great number of the Kereru brought into the KBRT Trust were released again back at the place where they were found. If you want to protect our Kereru and stop them from flying into our windows, get some stickers online by buying from www.projectkereru.org.nz.

KBRT is a charitable Trust and depends entirely upon donations of money, time and supplies in order to care for the hundreds of birds it receives each year. Visit us on our website to find out how to help.

Kuaotunu Bird Rescue Trust Continuing to Save our

most Vunerable birds Perry chapman

reserve ready for summer

The colourful Eastern Rosella (Platycercus eximius) with its reds, yellows and greens is native to the East Coast of Australia. The first occurrence of these parrots in New Zealand was in 1910 when they were illegally released off the Otago Coast. By the 1970’s they has become fairly common on the Coromandel. Adult birds grow to 30cm and they usually produced between 2-9 eggs.

Opito Bay farmer Sue Edens was rapt to see the installation of children’s playground equipment in the new Perry Chapman Reserve that she has recently vested to the council. The reserve is named in memory of her younger brother Perry, the son of Skipper and Joyce Chapman who were pioneering farmers at Opito.

Perry was born in 1956 and lived on the family farm at Opito until he was killed aged just 14 in a tragic tractor accident on the Black Jack Road just a few

days before Christmas 1970. Sue fondly remembers her little brother as a hard worker who loved the farming life and working and playing outdoors. “He loved all things mechanical and had a real aptitude for making and repairing equipment. He was a great kid who had so much potential. He was born to be a farmer like his dad.”

When the opportunity came up to vest the land as a council reserve, Sue knew that it was an opportunity

to do something for the memory of her brother and requested council that it be named after Perry. Particularly so in that this Christmas will be the 50th anniversary of his passing.

As a youngster when he died, Sue believed it was fitting that a children play area should be included as part of the Perry Chapman Reserve as an area where other kids could have fun like Perry would have enjoyed.

It’s that time of year when you drag out the outdoor furniture to find it’s gone mouldy or it’s broken, so off to the tip it goes. Some of this furniture e.g. chairs and umbrellas, is constructed of metal or aluminium and material such as canvas or plastic. The good news is that the metal is free of charge. The bad news is it needs to be stripped of the soft material component.

Same goes for the old rusted out BBQ – if it is on a wooden trolley then separate the metal from the wooden component. Please do this before you arrive at the RTS.

Spring has sprung and residents, especially those with holiday homes are into pruning their trees and getting their gardens into shape after winter. Sorting your garden

waste between green and that which has to go into normal waste makes it easier/potentially less costly for you. Locals are really getting used to this and it’s great to see. If you are not sure what is not accepted in the green waste please ask for a list at the RTS kiosk.

If you rent out your property to holidaymakers, it would be great if you could give them some guidance on rubbish disposal and recycling. Recycling arrangements vary so much from Council to Council, so your guests are unlikely to know what to do in the TCDC area. Taking their pre-paid bag to the RTS at the weekend or to the after-hours facility if the RTS is closed when they leave Is the best option if you are not providing a Council gullinator cover. Glass is ok to be left

kerbside. Recyclable plastics is the most difficult for people to get their head around. Only plastics with a 1 or 2 symbol inside a triangle are acceptable in the TCDC area. Any other plastics must go in the official blue bag.

Just a reminder that there is no after-hours cardboard drop off facility. We are still seeing cardboard dumped at the gate, left behind the bottle bank and dropped in the after-hours bins. Please bring your flattened cardboard into the RTS during opening hours, or flatten it and put inside your recycling wheelie bin.

More tips coming your way as the summer season approaches.

Chantelle Simpson took this photograph of a suspicious black car last weekend on Harbour Drive that was accompanied by two shirtless teenagers on bikes. These teens were seen going onto properties with the car black car waiting on the street nearby. The same car and bike riders were later seen on Kowhai drive. Over the last couple of weeks petrol has been stolen from boats around the village. If you do see suspicious activity in the area call the Police on 105.

KSAR are on a fundraising mission to raise $7000 to insulate and line the ceiling at their base in Whitianga. Currently the ceiling is iron and insulation paper, which means when it’s raining they can barely hear each other plus it’s extremely hot in summer and cold in winter. Due to Covid-19 cutting off annual fundraising events such as A Taste of Matarangi, who in past years have chosen KSAR as one of their charities, KSAR needs to look at other ways to find funding. If you are able to assist with a donation or sponsorship you can contact KSAR directly or go to their Givealittle page at:

Where in New Zealand is the MBP?

Inspired by last month’s South Island travel article Angela Williams decided to make the most of the Covid travel opportunities and took a recent trip down to the Central Otago to visit her daughter. She also took in the great vineyards and cuisine on offer whilst down there but stayed in touch by taking with her a copy of the MBP!

Ruth and Bob Fisken have been doing a little traveling around the South Island - Nelson, Blenheim, Picton & Westport before flying to Queenstown. Here they are with their travelling MBP beside Lake Wakatipu. They had just been on the SS Earnslaw across the lake to Walters Peak before they stopped for a scenic photo with their favourite paper! The grand old lady the Earnslaw is the only working steam ship in New Zealand and was built in 1913. Next stop for Ruth and Bob will be Wanaka and then it’s home to Matarangi.

THE

WINE

CLUB

REPORT

The wine club was packed last Wednesday night to hear ‘Dan the Man’ share wines from Leveret and Mills Reef. Dan has worked for Mills Reef for twenty years and is always extremely informative about his wines, so it was an entertaining evening.

In 2019 Mills Reef relocated their winery operations from their Bethlehem site in Tauranga, to Leveret Estate which was formerly Morton Estate in Katikati. Leveret Estate is a well-known sight with a striking Cape Dutch building reminiscent of the winery buildings you see in around Stellenbosch in South Africa’s Cape Province.

Five wines were tasted. Four from the Leveret range and one from Mills Reef. There was also an impressive portfolio of nine other wines that the wine club members could purchase on the night.

Leveret is under the umbrella of The Wine Portfolio which is a collection of distinctive New Zealand wine brands. The journey of The Wine Portfolio started in 1995 when John M Coney, purchased Morton Estate. It is due to Coney’s surname that the name Leveret came about. A rabbit or hare was once commonly called a coney and the name leveret means young hare, three of which can be seen on the brand’s distinctive signage.

The following wines were tasted:-Leveret Reserve Sparkling Brut Leveret Reserve Rose 2019Leveret Reserve Chardonnay 2014Mills Reef Reserve Merlot Malbec 2019 Leveret Reserve Syrah 2015

All these wines can be purchased at Puku and Kerre’s Liquor Store.

Did you know that a church, St Columcille’s, was built in Kuaotunu in 1893, when the village had approximately 2,000 inhabitants. The church which was of the Catholic faith cost 100 pounds to build, and was inaugurated free of debt. The material for the Church arrived in January 1893 by ship, and was carted up from the beach to where the old Kuaotunu school was located on Pumpkin Hill where it was quickly assembled by parishioners who were mainly gold miners.

As the population of the community dwindled and moved away in the earlier part of last century the building was disassembled in 1954 and barged to Tairua near the old Sir George Grey pub. Evidently the shift of the church was and please excuse the pun a bit of a jack-up job between to the two communities and the Bishop of Auckland was not told about it until some time later. The old Kuaotunu church continued to service Tairua until 1997.

Local History: Did you know?

Matarangi gets a calendar

St Columcille’s Church at Kuaotunu prior to its removal by barge in 1954 to Tairua.

Well its certainly starting to warm up (some days), interspersed with cold, windy, “can’t-make-up-our-mind” kind of days and with Daylight Savings just started for another season, so too has the humidity. Welcome to blow fly season!!

Calliphoridae - commonly known as blow flies, carrion flies, bluebottles, greenbottles, or cluster flies - are a family of insects in the order Diptera, with 1,200 known species. The name “blow fly” comes from an old English term for meat that had eggs laid on it, which

was said to be fly blown. They are typically a metallic blue or green colour and are larger than the normal house flies but have a short life span of approx. 7 days where they morph through 24 hours eggs to maggots, 4-5 days as maggots to pupa, 2-7 days from pupa to adult fly.

Although they make loud buzzing sounds, blow flies do not bite humans. However, blow flies do pose dangerous health threats to humans and animals. Maggots can infest living animals, resulting in a parasitic condition known as myiasis. This is where maggots feed on live flesh. Due to their propensity for decomposed material, they are used as a forensic tool for determining the estimate time of death.

To stop them coming into your homes, ensure that you remove their breeding sites such as blocked overgrown drains, check your compost piles and bins for maggots, keep your rubbish bins washed and clean, clear all outside food preparation areas and keep them clean of food scraps. Spraying interior and exterior surfaces will not stop them coming into your home but will eliminate them once they land. If you have large numbers appearing, look for any decomposing food and dead bodies of animals etc and remove immediately.

Trivia – One of the first known written terms “blow fly” can be found in works of William Shakespeare: Love’s Labour’s Lost, The Tempest, and Antony and Cleopatra.

Richard Simpson 1926 - 2020

The Matarangi 2021 calendar went on sale on Sunday! It can be purchased from Matarangi General Store. Pictured is Robyn Malcolm with the calendar.

Long time Mercury Bay resident Richard Simpson passed away on 14th September 2020 at Whitianga Continuing Care aged 94.

Raised in Kuaotunu, as a member of the pioneering Simpson family, Richard had eight siblings. His only sister Gaye was the oldest of the nine children and Richard was the first of the eight brothers that followed. Richard had a huge involvement in the Fire Force in the Mercury Bay district being a former Fire Chief and received a NZ Fire Service Gold Star award for his long and exemplary service. He also was involved for many years in the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club, the Mercury Bay Aero Club and had an instrumental hand in the creation of the Whitianga Marina. Boating was a great love and he built two launches, Chilly Bin and Chilly Bin 2.

Due to the current Covid-19 situation, and the restrictions imposed on numbers gathered at a funeral, the Mercury Bay public were still able to give tribute to the life and service of Richard to our district on Saturday September 19th. A funeral cortege travelled from the Whitianga fire station, through the town, past the marina and onward to the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club on the Esplanade.

There have been very few days that it has been possible to get out fishing. The wind has been relentless, but we have to remember this is the period of the equinox winds . Those brave few that were lucky to get out had varying degrees of success. Definitely snapper are being caught in deeper water around 50 metres, but also in around shallow foul. There have also been some nice Blue Cod caught while fishing the foul.It was pleasing to see two big work-ups recently. These consisted of hundreds of gannets along with schools of dolphins. These sightings used to be a regular occurrence, but it has been several years since I have witnessed such a large work-up.

With Labour Weekend fast approaching, remember the fishing competition we run on Sunday the 25th October is open to everyone, member or not. This competition is points based, so everyone is in with a chance of winning. Full details are on the tickets which will be available from Matarangi Realty and Matarangi Four Square.

After the weigh-in and while the judges are calculating the points, we will be holding our Junior’s Prize Giving. This is a great opportunity to witness the skills of our junior ranks.

The Annual General Meeting will be held following the Labour Weekend Competition Prize giving. This has been delayed because of Covid lockdowns

and hopefully will proceed as planned. Everyone is invited to this meeting at the Matarangi Fire Station at 5.30 pm.On the 7th November we will hopefully be holding our 25th Anniversary and Annual Prize giving dinner at the Dunes Golf Club. The inaugural meeting of the club was held on Thursday, 18th March 1995 and was chaired by our current Patron and only Life Member Blue Lewis at the Matarangi Fire Station.

This celebration has been delayed twice since the 18th March. Unfortunately all tickets have been sold for this function. Likewise, The Doris Day Out ladies fishing competition which was cancelled back in March is being held on the 21st November at the Matarangi Fire Station. This popular event is always well patronised with the Vegar family sponsoring a very impressive list of prizes.

The updated calendar is:

The AGM and Junior’s Prize Giving to coincide with the Labour Weekend Competition – 25th October subject any Covid restrictions.

The Annual prize giving Dinner – 7th November – Details to follow. – subject any Covid restrictions

Doris Day Competition – 21st November. – subject any Covid restrictions

Our financial year ended on the 30th June, so members subs are due. The subscription remains at $45.00 and new membership cards will be distributed on payment.

Another steady month for call outs with four to attend, two medicals, one sleep out fire and one residential flooding incident. With daylight saving here again it is timely to remind everyone to check their smoke detectors. This is important to do every year to check batteries and make sure they are functioning properly. You should also make sure that in case of fire you have an evacuation plan and practice it regularly. Our annual 3 person Ambrose golf tournament field is full with 30 teams registered. Thanks to you all for supporting us and a special thank you to all of our wonderful sponsors for committing to another great prize table. Without our wonderful sponsors support this tournament and fundraiser would not be possible. We are still in an Open Fire Season but as we go into summer and things start to dry out this will change so we will keep you informed as changes occur. With the change back to Level 1 Covid restrictions the Fire Station is now able to be used by our community groups and Club Members.

Stay safe everyone,

Stu Arnold

This is the month of the “M” planets. Our near neighbour Mars will not be this close or bright again until 2035 as it will actually be brighter than Jupiter while diminutive Mercury will be at its easiest to see during the first week of October. However, you will still have only about an hour after sunset to catch a glimpse before it sets as it is never far away from the Sun. It starts off being the brightest object in that part of the sky but it will get fainter and noticeably lower each morning.

Not to be outdone bright Jupiter and slightly fainter Saturn are high overhead in the early evenings while very bright Venus graces our northeastern dawn skies. All three are a great sight in even a small telescope. Venus is extremely close to Regulus, the brightest star in the constellation of Leo and this is a good chance to observe how Venus moves from day to day in its orbit around the Sun.

October 1 – Mercury will be at its best tonight and the next; very low in the west just after sunset.

October 2 – Full moon tonight with it lying just above Mars and with Mercury visible just after sunset very low in the west but still the brightest object in that part of the sky.

October 3 – The Moon has now moved to lie just below reddish Mars in the evening. Early risers will be able to see a nice sight with Venus extremely close to Regulus, the brightest star in the constellation of Leo.

October 4 – The Moon now lies further below Mars and slightly to the right of it.

October 13 – Venus has already moved well to the right of and below Regulus while the Moon sits just to its left in the dawn sky.

October 14 – The Moon now sit below and between both Regulus and Venus in the dawn NE sky.

October 18 – The twilight western horizon has a very thin crescent Moon just to the right and above Mercury which is now rapidly moving down towards the Sun every night.

October 20 – The Moon sits just above and to the right of the red giant star Antares which is normally a similar brightness to Mars...but compare them now while Mars is so close to us!

October 22 – The Moon lies just below Jupiter with Saturn a bit higher up in the evening.

October 23 – The Moon now sits just above Saturn with Jupiter a bit further down.

24 Matapaua Bay Road, Opito Bay ID: 2200655 For Sale: $789,000

This little gem in sought-after Opito Bay radiates memories. Properties in the bay are rare and those at entry level prices even more so. The ability to purchase two self-contained units in the heart of a beach community is practically unheard of! Situated on a full, level section less than a minutes-walk to the beach is the perfect holiday escape or rental option.
