McCloy Consulting is at the forefront of providing a wide range of technical and professional services to the renewable energy sector.

Hydro electric generation, including small-scale hydro and micro-hydro projects, will form a key component of green energy generation as UK and Ireland governments strive to limit carbon emissions. Hydro electricity offers a reliable, predictable and efficient means of generating clean electricity.

Hydro-power is fundamentally based on hydraulic head and flow. It is therefore essential to reliably establish the flows available to power any scheme.

Why choose us?

McCloy Consulting was founded as a specialist water engineering consultancy, with hydrology and flow estimation our core expertise - we are ideally placed to provide services to the hydro sector.

We use extensive water engineering expertise to optimise design of hydro-electric projects of any scale.

Our hydrological input is essential to planners, developers and designers in determining generation potential to optimise turbine selection and satisfy regulators.

hydro-power

Page 13: McCloy General Brochure

Hydrological input is vital to storage-hydro and run-of-river type hydro schemes. Our services to the hydro sector include:

Screening & Feasibility Studies

We can quickly give an initial assessment to prospective developers by providing:

• Screening of existing pressures to watercourses • Guidance on regulatory requirements• Anticipated power output potential• Guidance on most suitable type of scheme

Low Flow Estimation and Flow Duration

Developers are required to establish flows that are safe to abstract from the river, and reliably estimated Flow Duration Curves (FDC) in order that turbine selection can be optimised to suit.

Commercially available flow estimates often do not take into consideration local pressures on watercourses that can affect the natural FDC. To maximise efficiency and output, it is vital that schemes are designed based on hydrological information from a number of sources.

We can supply:

• Low flow & Hands Off Flow (HOF) analysis• Hydrometric flow monitoring & statistical analysis• Flow monitoring • Flow Duration Curves (FDC) for gauged and ungauged catchments

Other related services we provide to the hydro-sector:

• Intake arrangements: Modelling and design assistance• Turbine selection: Assessment of turbine envelopes and efficiency curves• Flood Risk Assessment• Hydrology Assessments for Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) / Environmental Statements• Environmental Monitoring• Abstraction Licensing and Permitting

McCloy Consulting was established as a specialist water engineering consultancy. We provide our hydrology and hydrogeology expertise to a wide range of industry sectors.

The movement, distribution and quality of surface water needs to be carefully considered regardless of the project. Not all runoff flows into rivers. Depending on ground conditions, a significant percentage can soak into the ground as infiltration replenishing aquifers or seep back into surface water bodies as baseflow.

Why choose us?

We appreciate the intricate nature of the natural water cycle, which is demonstrated through our involvement in a wide array of projects as follows:

• Flood hydrology / flood flow estimation• Hydrology & hydrogeology assessments for EA/EIS• Hydro power feasibility• Peat bog hydrology & eco-hydrology• Low flow hydrology• Water resources• Groundwater assessment • Assessment of climate change impact• Assimilative capacity assessment• Hydrometry & flow monitoring

We are proud of our proven track record and reputation for providing clear, concise advice allowing our clients to make informed decisions.

By focusing specifically on the water sector, we are ideally placed to address hydrology and hydrogeology issues on any project.
