Dear McKee Garden Member:

What an amazing year of growth the Garden just celebrated. We welcomed so many new visitors, expanded our plant collections and announced our plans for the new Children’s Garden at McKee.

During the past Fiscal Year 2016-2017, we had our second best year of attendance since the Garden reopened in 2001. We welcomed over 57,238 visitors and sold 998 new memberships. We successfully held our five signature events: Community Appreciation Day, Holidays at McKee and Nights of Lights Celebration, 8th Annual Motor Car Exhibition, 7th Annual Fairy and Pirate Festival, and 13th Annual Waterlily Celebration. In addition, we hosted 24 educational workshops throughout the year and the McKee Botanical Book Club held five well-attended monthly meetings. None of this would be possible without the help of our dedicated volunteers. Over 151 volunteers donated a total of over 5,320 hours. We are so fortunate and grateful to all of our volunteers who helped with mailings, special events, the book club, classes, and assisting the horticulture staff in keeping the Garden in pristine condition.

In November, we welcomed the award-winning Nature Connects: Art with LEGO© Bricks exhibition by Sean Kenney. This exhibition featured fourteen larger-than-life sculptures built with over 300,000 LEGO pieces as well as a LEGO Brick Build Station. Over 50,000 visitors, which included many students from local schools and tour groups from all over the state and beyond, enjoyed this exhibition which was on display through May. This was the second McKee Nature Connects exhibit. The first exhibit, Nature Connects: Art with LEGO© Bricks, was on display from January through April 2015 and brought 34,935 visitors to McKee.

As an integral part of our botanical mission, our plant collections continue to improve and expand. During the past year, we planted 12 new tropical fruit trees and plants, including Jackfruit, Breadfruit and Peanut Butter Plants. Our orchid collection continues to grow and includes 250 permanently mounted plants in the jungle with another 300 greenhouse specimens being grown for temporary and future display. In 2017, we acquired 100 new orchids which will be added to the original Ames Orchid Collection as well as five plants of Grammatopyllum wallisii. When these plants mature, their canes can reach 7’ tall with 6’ flower spikes. In addition, we received a donation of six Aechmea floribunda Bromeliad specimens. This is the largest species of Aechmea with leaves that can reach 6’. McKee’s Bromeliad collection has expanded to include over 60 Tillandsia of over 20 species in permanent positions throughout the Garden with another 50 plants growing in the greenhouse for the future. During the winter, some of the waterlilies die off or diminish in vigor, and in order to save some of them, we have begun to collect tubers in the fall for replanting in the spring. The Garden’s waterlily collection includes almost 200 potted and 90 free range varieties. A new aquatic plant for McKee is the St. Louis Gold, which was selected in hopes that it would naturalize in shady locations. We continually research new and interesting plants to add to our diverse collection.

The Campaign for the Children’s Garden at McKee officially kicked off in September 2016 with a goal to raise $7.5 million by June 30, 2018. By the end of the fiscal year, over $4.5 million had been raised, including the first-ever $1 million gift to the Garden. The gift was given to establish the Elizabeth and Whitney MacMillan Endowment for Education, one of the primary components of the Campaign for the Children’s Garden at McKee. As a result, a formal Education Committee was formed to set goals for the future of the education program and to oversee the hiring process for the first-ever Director of Education at McKee, expected to be on board by fall 2018. The Education Committee is led by board member, Peter Benedict II, and is made up of a small team of highly qualified leaders in education in our community. The Vero Beach community has embraced the project with enthusiasm and anticipation as we work towards completion of the project in spring 2019. Presentations were made to several communities and groups throughout the year including Windsor, John’s Island, Orchid, The Moorings and a variety of garden clubs throughout Indian River County, resulting in strong financial support and ambassadorship. On the construction side, McKee selected the project’s general contractor – EBL Construction out of Naples, FL – after a highly competitive proposal process. The Children’s Garden Committee, led by McKee board member Jill Grimaldi, worked diligently to maintain the project’s momentum, keeping a strict schedule of group meetings and discussions between the committee, McKee leadership, and the construction and engineering teams, and Emmanuel Didier, designer of the Children’s Garden at McKee. We will extend the current historic landscape of the Children’s Garden. Grown as a cost saving measure and for a sense of pride by McKee’s talented horticulture staff, new plants will include the statuesque Foxy Lady Palm (Wodveitchia), five different species of staghorn ferns and Bravaisia berlandieriana, a picturesque shrub with numerous small white flowers and a purple throat. We are extremely grateful to our donors who have already given so generously to the campaign and hope that others will consider giving a gift to help us reach our goal.

Lastly, we are proud to say that McKee Botanical Garden was also awarded the 2016 Certificate of Excellence award from Trip Advisor, the “People’s Choice Award” for “Best Local Attraction” and “Best Local Tours” from Scripps Treasure Coast/TC Palm during the past year and was recognized as one of the “Top 10 Most Beautiful Gardens That Florida Has To Offer” by TripsToDiscover.com. The Garden continues to thrive and expand and we are extremely grateful to all of you for your continued support and commitment to the Garden’s future.
