The Singapore Symphony Orchestra

1984 marks the 6th year of the founding of theSingapore Symphony Orchestra. In its shorthistory, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra hasattained the status of an orchestra comparable tothose in Europe and USA, where the world's bestorchestras are found.

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra gave itsfirst inaugural concerts in the SingaporeConference Hall in January, 1979..under thebaton of its Music Director and ResidentConductor, Choo Hoey. By the end of December1983, it has performed a total of 296 concerts!

The Orchestra which started with an initialstrength of 41 members now has 61. With thisincreased strength, the repertoire of the SingaporeSymphony Orchestra has also expanded. It hasperformed works ranging from the Baroque era tothe 20th Century, and works by Asian and localcomposers.

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra has donemuch to increase the level of music appreciationand awareness in classical music besidesproviding opportunities for young musical talentsto realise their ambition within Singapore.

Besides the regular Series Concerts, theSingapore Symphony Orchestra also performs theFamiliar Favourites Concerts to capacity crowds atits permanent home at the Victoria Concert Hall.

In its continual effort to bring music to thepeople, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra alsospecially programmed concerts for schools andoutdoor concerts. It assumes the role of educating

our future concert audience, namely the schoolchildren, with its Music in Schools programme,where they are given the opportunity to hearchamber groups from the Orchestra perform.

In addition to performing standard orchestralworks. the Singapore Symphony Orchestra alsomade its mark as a theatre orchestra - when itaccompanied the Sadler's Wells Royal Balletduring its Asian Tour in 1980 and later in 1982-and as an opera orchestra, accompanying thestars from the Metropolitan Opera of New York, inthree nights of romantic opera, performed topacked audiences.

Many renowned conductors and soloists havevisited and performed with the SingaporeSymphony Orchestra. These include SalvatoreAccardo, Ruggiero Ricci, Hans Richter Haaser,Mark Kaplan, Daniel Adni, Liu Deha!. Liu Shikun.Fou T'song, Aaron Rosand, Ilana Vered, GyorgySandor, Shalom Ronly-Rik1is.Igor Politkovsky.Victor Tretyakov, Laszlo Heltay. Ilarion Galati,Alfreda Hodgson and many more.

The Orchestra has also performed in WestMalaysia. Thailand and the Philippines. Thesevisits have helped to cement our close cultural tieswith our Asean neighbours. There are plans tovisit more Asian countries in 1984 and Europe in1985.

In its 1984 schedule, the Singapore SymphonyOrchestra hopes to give more concerts that caterto its various publics and to do three more long-playing records.


ChooHoey

Choo Hoey assumed the role of Music Director &Resident Conductor of the Singapore SymphonyOrchestra. to oversee its inception in 1979 and itsdevelopment.

In 1952, he entered the Royal Academy ofMusic, London. There he studied the violin, horn,composition and conducting. In 1955, hecompleted his studies and won two major awards.

.Following further studies in Brussels, and the"International Sommer-Akademie" in Salzburg, hewas invited to conduct the Belgium NationalOrchestra in 1958, thereby making his debut inthe international scene. Choo Hoey was theninstrumental in introducing the perfonnance ofStravinsky's "Agon" in Belgium. with the BelgiumState Radio Orchestra.

His international career brought him to thegreat music capitals of Europe and Latin America,the USSR and the People's Republic of Chinawhere he conducted such famous orchestras as theLondon Symphony Orchestra, LondonPhilharmonic Orchestra, Royal PhilharmonicOrchestra. Orchestre de la Societe duConservatoire. Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, toname a few. In the course of his career. he hascollaborated with world-renowned soloists likeSalvatore Accardo, Pierre Fournier, Tamas Vasary,Shura Cherkassky. Andre Navarra, Ruggiero Ricciand Aaron Rosand.

In recognition of his contribution to the field ofmusic in Singapore. Chqo Hoey was awarded theCultural Medallion in 1979 and bestowed thePublic Service Star in 1982 by the President ofSingapore. He was invited to the 1982 TchaikovskyInternational Competition as the Guest of Honourby the Government of the USSR.

AugustinDumay

Augustin Dumay's career has been a recentone. Though he has yet to attain world-widecelebrity, he is considered to be one of mostoutstanding violinists of our time.

In 1979, he was asked by Herbert von Karajanto take part in a programme especially dedicatedto the Maestro's works by Radio France.Immediately afterwards, he began his solo careerwith Sir Colin Davis and the Berlin PhIlharmonicOrchestra. It was success one after another fromthen on.

He has also played with the English ChamberOrchestra, the Nouvel Orchestra PhIlharmonique,the Annsterdam Phllharmonic, the HessischeRundfunk Orchester, the DusseldorferPhllharmoniker. the Berliner PhIlharmoniker, theOrchestra de la Suisse Romande. the Orchestradella RAI di Torino, and the MontrealPhIlharmonic Orchestra.

Though he has 30 concerti in his repertoire.one of his principal pleasure is chamber music. Hehas collaborated with Wolfang Sawalich. MichelBeroff, J.P. Collard. Lynn Harell, Frederic Lodeon,and YoYo Ma in chamber perfonnances.

Besides concertising, Augustin appears often onFrench television networks and ffims devoted tomusic.

Augustin Dumay does numerous recordings.Recent issues include sonatas of Cesar Franck,Faure. Ravel, Debussy and Lekeu with Collard,the three Braluns sonatas with Michel Beroff. theRavel, Schubert and Faure trios with Collard andLodeon and the 3rd concerto by Saint-Saens withthe Monte Carlo Orchestra. Augustin Dumay playson a 1721 Stradivarius, which used to belong toFritz Kreisler.

Programme NotesOverture "The Storm"Peter nyich Tchaikousky (1840-1893)

While he was still studying at the St.Petersburg Conservatory. Tchaikovsky planned towrite an opera based on Ostrovsky's drama "TheStonn". This project fell through, but when histeacher Anton Rubinstein assigned him the task ofwriting an overture in 1864. Tchaikovsky decidedto base it on the plot of Ostrovsky's play. Thecompleted work did not meet with Rubinstein'sapproval. who found it crude and perfunctory.Though undoubtedly derivative and leaningheavily on composers such as Berlioz, Liszt,Meyerbeer and Verdi. Rubinstein's opinionappears manifestly unfair as the overture is acreditable achievement for the youngTchaikovsky. The work already displays thecompelling Tchaikovskian hallmarks such asshattering climaxes, sweeping drama and brilliantorchestration so familiar in his symphonies andother later orchestral works.

The overture begins with a slow introduction inwhich 'cellos and basses struggle out of thedepths, egged on by two fortissimo chords fromthe orchestra. The Russian folk-song "IskhodilaMladenka" is heard. espressivo. on 'cellos andhorn. A dramatic outburst from full orchestra anda hushed brass fanfare usher in the spirited dottedtheme of the allegro introduced by the violins andwhich builds up to a full-blooded tutti. The windsthen bring in the winsome second subject whichis supported by sighing violins. A noteworthyfeature of the dynamic development is the fugatowhose motif is derived from the }:Irincipalsubject.The two main themes are later combined, butbefore the recapitulation begins. there is a briefrespite in which the bassoon introduces a pensivelittle tune. The recapitulation is entirely regular,and is followed by a reprise of the dramaticoutburst which preceded the exposition. The codabrings the overture to a characteristically blazingfinish in which all the stops are pulled out.


Symphonic Espagnole forViolin & Orchestra, Op, 21Edward Lalo (1823-1892)

The French comprn;;erEdouard Lalo wasinfluenced and fascinated by the music of Spain.which is not at allsurprising as both his parentswere of Spanish ancestry. It took him a longperiod of time to achieve recognition as acomposer. which he gained only when he wasover fifty years of age. This recognition came withthe performance of Lalo's Violin Concerto by thegreat violin virtuoso, Pablo de Sarasate, to whomthe work was dedicated.

Sarasate himself. though a native-bornSpaniard, received his musical education inFrance. and became a French citizen. His style ofplaying. which was by all accounts pure andsweet-toned, with an astonishingly flexible andlight techhique, made him one of the mostcelebrated virtuosos of his day. Following on thesuccess of Sarasate's performance of the Concerto.Lalo was inspired to write the SymphonieEspagnole (Spanish Symphony) for his friend. Thisnew work was performed in Paris on February 7,1875, and was an instant success. It is the onlywork of Lalo's that remains in the standardorchestral repertoire today.

The Symphonie Espagnole, which is really aviolin concerto in all but name, consists of fivemovements:

I: Allegro non troppo The emphatic openingrhythm is taken up by the soloist, who then lapsesbriefly into a passionate malaguena fragment. Therhythmic motif returns and leads to the soloist'sstatement of the intensely dramatic principaltheme from which, it is now apparent, the openingmotif is derived. The mood softens for the tenderlyyearning second subject..which is in the relativemajor key.


ll: Scherzando; Allegro molto This movementis a lively seguidilla, whose castanet rhythms areheard on a pizzicato strings. In the middle. thesoloist introduces a more lyrtcal strain. but theconstant interruptions of the seguidilla prevent itfrom ever really getting under way.

ill: Intermezzo; Allegretto non troppo Thethird movement is a carefree intermezzo(allegretto non troppo) based on a rhythmicpattern of Moorish origin. The orchestra, afterdominating the brilliant introduction, allows thesolo violin to take the centre of the stage for therest of the movement.

IV: Andante The fourth movement, markedandante. begins with a solemn introductiondominated by the lower brass. The soloist enterswith a folk.like melodic line. which has beenvariously described as Spanish and Scandinavian!The middle section allows much scope for virtuosoplaying; and the folk-song returns. over a softtimpani background.

V: Rondo: Allegro The jaunty little staccatofigure introduced by the bassoons is worked on atsome length by the orchestra, but it eventuallybecomes the accompaniment for the infectiouslycheerful rondo theme joyfolly played by thesoloist. One of the episodes in the middle is amalaguena, whose passionate theme has beenhinted at by the soloist at the very beginning ofthe work. At the end. the soloist propels the workto its sparkling conclusion with delicate yetbreathtakingly virtuosic runs and trills.


Symphony No.7 in D minor, Op. 70Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904)

The friendship and mutual admiration betweenAntonin Dvorak and Johannes Braluns, amid theusualjea10usies and back-bitting in the musicalworld is all the more heart-warming especiallywhen one rea1ises that their personalities andmusical styles were quite disparate andcontrasting. Braluns, acclaimed as the natural heirto Beethoven, stood finnly in the solid Germanicline of musical tradition, while Dvorak was anardent Czech nationalist whose mellifluous andattractive music never strayed far from theirmusical grassroots. Brahms was responsible formaking Dvorak known beyond the boundaries ofhis native country, and urged his publisherSimrock to publish Dvorak's Moravian Duets in1877. This publication met with such success thatit led to Dvorak receiving invitations from otherGerman publishers, and to his works gainingwider popularity.

Dvorak wrote nine symphonies in all, the mostwell-known being the last, "From the NewWorld", which is also one of the most popularsymphonies in the repertoire. His four earlysymphonies were originally not numbered, whichhas led to some confusion in the presentnumbering. The New World Symphony, nowknown as No.9, was formerly No.5. The present7th Symphony in D Minor, Opus 70, wasoriginally known as No.2 as it was the second tobe published.

The Seventh Symphony was written to acommission from the London PhilharmonicSociety who nominated him as an honorarymember in 1884. Dvorak was conscious of hisnewly-acquired international reputation and wasanxious to write a work which would be his finestsymphony so far. At the same time, Dvorak hadjust heard Bralun's 3rd Symphony, which headmired immensely, and wanted to "writeasymphony of similar stature.

At this period, Dvorak was also in the midst ofa deeply-felt artistic crisis. The question beforehim was whether he should now depart from thenationalistic path along which his music so farhad travelled, or strive to "internationalise" hismusic to gain it wider recognition. In effect. thiswould mean coming into the then German-dominated musical main-stream, somethingcontrary to his deep-rooted Czech nationalism.

The influence of Braluns and the artistic crisiswhich Dvorak was facing are clearly reflected inthe 7th Symphony which is considered to be hisfmest. The fll"Stmovement is immediatelyturbulent and grim, its Bralunsian principal motifscarcely alleviated by the more lilting secondsubject. The slow movement is more serene andhas a calm inner strength but the mood of the fll"Stmovement returns in the middle. The scherzo istense and urgent, with a more relaxed trio. In thefmale, the turbulence returns but is this timeeventually resolved and the Symphony ends intriumph.
