Principal’s Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The first marking period has been fast and fantastic! Thank you
to everyone who attended our Back-to-School Night in September and
our conferences in October. Both were the best attended events I’ve
seen in my four years at Meade Middle. Teachers have been excited to
meet so many of you and to strengthen their partnership with you.
If you weren’t able to attend either of those events, don’t wor-
ry. There are plenty of upcoming opportunities for parents to join us.
Parents and guardians, you are always welcome to visit classrooms. All
we ask is that you make arrangements with teachers at least one day in
advance. When you visit, you will need to stop by the office to sign in
and get a visitor’s badge. As a security measure, we ask that parents
wear their visitor’s badge where it is easily visible and that you do not
bring bags with you. If you wish to meet with a teacher, counselor, and/
or administrator, we ask that you also schedule those meetings in ad-
vance.
The week of November 13-17 is American Education Week and
parents and guardians are encouraged to visit schools. Thursday, No-
vember 16th is our Family Night. Families are invited to join us to en-
gage in fun STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) related ac-
tivities. Parents and guardians will also have the opportunity to learn
about topics that we are frequently asked about, such as preparing stu-
dents for high school and college, understanding PARCC and Common
Core, and helping children deal with issues common to their age group
and development. Thanks to our partnership with United Way, we have
shirts autographed by Ravens player Ladarius Webb to raffle off at our
Family Night!
Our next round of conferences is scheduled for Friday, Decem-
ber 8th. These conferences will be student-led, meaning students will
need to attend so that they can guide you in reviewing their work sam-
ples and discuss what steps they need to take in their academic perfor-
mances. Teachers will also be around to answer any questions you
might have. More information about student-led conferences will be
shared prior to December 8th.
I’d like to express my thanks to our PTSA executive board.
This year we have an entirely new team. Our previous executive board
has supported our school for several years and they have decided it is
time to pass the torch. Our new PTSA executive board has shown a lot of
enthusiasm and spent time learning from their predecessors. I am ex-
tremely grateful to our PTSA for all of their hard work and their dedica-
tion to our students. The TEAM acronym (Together Everyone Achieves
More) certainly holds true here. To all of our PTSA members, thank you
for being part of our team.
Finally, be on the lookout for report cards which will go home
with students on November 20th.
Sincerely,
Christine DeGuzman

The Meade Middle Food Pantry is Full & Open!
Despite our status as one of the wealthiest states
in the nation, Maryland communities are deeply
impacted by food insecurity. While the homeless
remain the most visible faces of hunger, the need
for food assistance is rising among children, sen-
iors, and working families.
Meade Middle now has our very own Food Pantry
Program to help foster the nutritional needs of our
students at home. If you would like to volunteer,
donate, or participate in our program, please
reach out to our food bank coordinators:
Ms. Queen– [email protected]
Mrs. O’Donnell (School Social Worker)-
Thank you!
Kids Helping Kids Food Drive
Meade Middle School will be partnering with
Kids Helping Kids in collecting food that will stay
in our food pantry. We have been challenged
along with other county schools to collect food for
the Maryland Food Bank. Help us meet the chal-
lenge. From October 23rd until November 21st we
will be collecting none-perishable food items
through homeroom classes. This is a great food
drive that keeps all the food donated right here in
our Meade Middle Community. Please help out if
you are able.
Thank You from the SGA at Meade Middle

November 2017-January 2018
Cold Weather and School Uniforms
As the weather gets colder, many of our students are coming to
school dressed in clothing that is not adequate for the cold tem-
peratures. Many students are choose to wear short-sleeved
shirts because they like the look, despite the fact that they are not
warm.
The most common problem we encounter is students wearing
sweatshirts that do not meet the uniform policy (see below).
Please remind your students that hoodies are NOT allowed. We
know parents aren’t always able to check how children dress
each morning, but we appreciate it if you reinforce the uniform
policy at home. This way we can keep our scholars’ focus where
it needs to be—on their education.
• Tops: Black, gray, navy blue, or pastel blue long or short-
sleeved collared shirts with two or three buttons at the neck
and without logos.
• Pants: Khaki-style pants in black, navy blue, or khaki. Pants
must fit securely around the waist. Jeans, leggings, joggers
and sweatpants are not permitted.
• Skirts/Shorts/Skorts: Must be black, navy blue, or khaki
colored. The bottom of the garment must be no more than 3
inches from the center of the knee cap.
Additional Clothing: Solid navy blue or black V-neck sweaters,
front button cardigans, sweatshirts or fleece pull overs, and
Meade Middle School sweatshirts may be worn over uniform tops
during the school day. College sweatshirts are also allowed as
long as the college/university name is visible and there is no
hood.
ALL hooded sweatshirts, coats, hats, bookbags and string
bags must be kept in lockers at all times. Students may car-
ry their PE and Dance uniforms in plastic grocery bags–
no string bags are allowed this year.

November 2017-January 2018
Tutoring Tuesday
Each Tuesday after school tutoring is offered for all stu-
dents. All teachers are available from 3:10–4:10pm. Stu-
dents are served a light dinner right after school. From the
cafeteria, they go to the teacher’s room they need extra
help from. This is also a great opportunity for students to
make up missed work or projects. At the end of the tutor-
ing session, activity buses are available for bus riders to
ride home. Parents, please remind your child to take ad-
vantage of these tutoring sessions as needed. Have your
child pick up a Tutoring Tuesday pass from their teacher to
have signed by you. Students must have parent permis-
sion and must make arrangements with the teachers by the
day before. This is required to ensure that parents know
the whereabouts of their child.
Clubs Anyone?
On Thursdays we have after-school clubs from 3:10-
4:10pm. Our after-school clubs are a great opportunity for
students to explore their interests and to meet new people!
The clubs that are being offered this fall include:
Art Club (Mrs. Elfring)
Band / Orchestra Club (Ms. Dixon)
Chorus Club (Mrs. Gray)
Dance Company (Ms. Rose)
F.Y.I. Club (Mr. Stancil)
Girls and Guys on the Run (Mrs. Gaurin)
G.R.A.C.E. Girl’s Club (Ms. Perkins)

Pop Culture / Culture Club (Ms. Cohen)
Science Club (Mrs. Schlauch)
SGA (Mrs. Poteet)
Yearbook Club (Mrs. Saunders / Mr. Antonio)
Weight Training Club (Mr. Washington)
*Please note– some clubs require prior approval from the
club sponsor. Please make sure that your student confirms
with the sponsor before staying after for a club.
With parent permission, students are allowed to stay after
school where they will receive a light dinner in the cafete-
ria. From the cafeteria, students go to the club they wish to
participate in. Parent permission is required to ensure
that parents know the whereabouts of their child. Please
note- At the closure of clubs, activity buses are available
for bus riders to ride home.

Student Government Association (SGA)
We are looking for 6th and 7th grade students who
are leaders in the school, both academically and so-
cially, to join the SGA. These students must keep
their grades up and stay out of trouble.
In SGA, we work on school-based activities including
the Valentine’s Dance, candy fundraisers, and, possi-
bly a Color Run this year.
SGA members also participate in field trips where
they get to discuss real issues our school faces and
vote on Bills and Resolutions to address their
concerns.
Character Counts - Winners Walk Tall
This unique program provides a positive alternative to
the problems students are facing today. Members from
the Anne Arundel County Police Department's Youth
Activities Program will spend 15 minutes per week with
selected 8th grade students, delivering positive charac-
ter messages based on the Six Pillars of Character. The
Six Pillars of Character are Trustworthiness, Respect,
Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. The
pillars are taught on a monthly basis beginning with
Citizenship as the pillar of the month for November.
Meade Middle School 2nd Marking Period
November 2017-January 2018
Dear Meade Middle Community,
This year Meade Middle School Student Government Association (SGA) is helping the Yearbook Club with the cost of yearbooks for students. We wel-
come you to sponsor in our 2017-2018 year book. We know that many of you have small businesses or know someone with a small business, so we are
asking if you would be willing to sponsor a page in the yearbook. Through your sponsorship we will be able to decrease the printing cost of yearbooks
to make them more affordable for the students.
Your sponsorship has many benefits. As yearbook sponsors, your advertisement will be showcased as it conveys support of this community, these stu-
dents, and the school district. This will also promote your business to the entire Meade Middle community, which includes faculty, staff, students, par-
ents, and other community members.
Yearbook sponsorships are not just for a business, a family can sponsor a student as well. If you are interested in supporting this year’s Meade Middle
School yearbook, please fill out the attached form, choosing the right ad size, and return to Mrs. Poteet no later than Friday March 16th.
Sponsorship/Advertisement Prices:
Full page= $100
Half page= $50
Quarter page= $30
Your continued support of Meade Middle is greatly appreciated. SGA and Yearbook Club thanks you for your contribution. If you have any questions or
concerns, you can contact Mrs. Garnett Poteet at [email protected] or Mr. Eric Antonio [email protected].
Sincerely,
Meade Middle School SGA

Promoting Good AttendanceAll Winter Long
Every winter, bad weather — snow, slush, freezing temperatures or even heavy rains in warmer climates — can present challenges to getting children to school. So do the colds, fevers and earaches that often come with the winter months.
1. Develop back up plans for getting yourchildren to school in bad weather.
a. Check to see if your child can get a ride with other familieswho have a reliable car that can manage the snow.
b. Form a “walking school bus” with other families to getstudents to school safely.
c. Join other families in a snow shovel brigade to clear thesidewalks closest to the school.
d. Ask if school administrators have developed plans fortransporting students.
2. Keep your children healthy.a. Dress them warmly for the cold weather.
b. Stress the importance of eating a good breakfast everymorning.
c. Stress hand washing, particularly in the winter months.Send your child to school with a small bottle of handsanitizer. Research shows that something as simple ashand washing can improve attendance.
d. Talk to your doctor or school nurse about when a sick childshould come to school. Most health providers allow a childto attend with a cold, but not with a fever.
