Brett Myhres

Voice of the Vikings

Brett Myhres begins his 18th season as the public address announcer for the Guilford girls basketball team. He began announcing girls basketball contests his junior year. Myhres also handles announcing duties for the Vikings’ home boys and girls volleyball, boys basketball, boys and girls soccer, football, and wrestling events, as well as the annual cheerleading competition, and any conference or sectional track meet hosted by the school. In addition to Guilford, Myhres also serves as the public address announcer for Rockford University’s home volleyball, basketball, and football games. He also is the backup PA announcer for Rock Valley College basketball. He has extensive professional experience, as he was the voice of the Rockford IceHogs from 2010-12, and the Rockford RiverHawks/Aviators from 2010-15. Currently, he is the public address announcer of the Chicago Red Stars of the National Women’s Soccer League. He also does some play-by-play work for the Red Stars, as well as for the Boylan High School webcasts. A graduate of the Class of 2000, Myhres was involved with band and choir while a Guilford student, and will sing the national anthem on occasion at sporting events. Outside of announcing, Myhres is an avid Chicago sports fan, and never misses a Blackhawks game if he can help it. In what free time he has, he loves spending time with his dogs, watching as many sports as possible, and bragging about his niece and five nephews. He’s looking forward to the 2015-16 Lady Vikings’ basketball season, and knows it will be a special one.

Matt Huels

Varsity Head Coach

Coach Huels begins his first season as Head Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach. Prior to this year,

Coach Huels has 14 years of coaching experience at various levels spending the last two seasons

as an Assistant Coach to Guilford Boys’ Basketball Coach Dean Martinetti.

Coach Huels graduated from Rochelle Township High School in 2002 where he played under Hall

of Fame coach Russ Zick. He graduated from Northern Illinois University in 2007 with a Bachelor’s

In Education and is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in Autism

Education through the University of Missouri-Columbia. Huels currently teaches at McIntosh

Elementary School as a Physical Education teacher.

Coach Huels lives in Rockford with his wife, Erin, and their 2 year-old son, Carson.

Coaching Staff

Heidi Harris

Assistant Coach Varsity

Coach Harris graduated from Winnebago High School. After high school, she attended Rockford

University where she played on the women’s basketball team. She earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s

degree from Rockford University. Her coaching experience includes coaching stints at Rockford

University, Boylan Catholic High School, Harlem School District, and Christian Life.

Coach Harris is married to Andrew and they have two daughters, Taylor (10) and Natalie (7).

Tony Crossen

Assistant Coach / Head Sophomore Coach

Coach Crossen graduated from Rockford East High School. He was on the basketball team from 1995

-99. He played one year of college basketball for Rock Valley College in 2005. Coach Crossen’s

coaching experiences include coaching at Lincoln Middle School in Rockford and he has been

coaching in the Guilford Girls’ basketball program since 2012. He is been a basketball trainer through

the YMCA since 2009 where his clients have received college scholarships, NIC-10 All-Conference

awards, and Honorable Mention All-State.

Chris Yerk

Assistant Coach / Head Freshmen Coach

Coach Yerk is a graduate of Belvidere High School and Illinois State University. He has been a teacher

at Guilford High School since 2005. His previous coaching experiences include coaching in the

Guilford Boys’ Basketball program and the Marshall Boys’ and Girls’ program. Coach Yerk and his wife,

Becky have two sons, Porter (4) and Owen (2).

Nate Newson

Assistant Coach

Coach Newson is a graduate of Auburn High School He is in his 4th season coaching in the Guilford

Girls’ Basketball Program, prior to that he was a coach in the Rockford Auburn Boys’ basketball pro-

gram. Coach Newson is also an assistant coach for the Guilford Girls’ Track and Field team. He is

currently a paraprofessional at Guilford.
