Task 1Clothing: There were a lot of levels of dressing. Kings and Queens wore expensive materials-clothes. They had clothes that were fashionable, made out of materials like animals’ fur, silk, velvet, with silver

or even gold attached on the clothes. Bishops and the lords’ types of clothes were similar to each other. They wore robes with mantle and expensive jewelries. Sometimes they had hats which were made out of velvet on. Friars and monks usually wore brown robes. Bishops, friars and monks usually had tightened ropes around their waists. Knights wore protective armors that were made by iron. Normal soldiers wore chain mail armors. Men wore tunics with cloaks, women wore shirts with long tunics. Peasants’ clothes were a lot cheaper and simple. They could even make the clothes themselves. They usually wore shirts that were made of linen, tight trousers that were made by woollen and straw hats.

Food: People in Medieval Times ate a very wide range of food. Their diets also depended on how wealthy they were. They ate a lot of types of meat like beef, pork, lamb, fish and also birds. Castles usually had the supplies of food coming from the outside, unless they actually did farming inside the castles. Peasants couldn’t afford for fancy meals. They usually ate bread that were made from barley, added with peas and beans. They also ate pottage, if they could afford pork, they would also add it into the pottage. Thick, flattened bread were used as a plate because plates weren’t very common. Different types of bread

Weapons and tools: Weapons were gradually updated after new materials were invented like bronze. Weapons like swords, daggers, axes, spears were common. Archers couldn’t defend for themselves but with their bows and arrows, they could really help the army. Lance was a useful weapon for knights when they were fighting battles while riding on their horses. Foot soldiers and knights also used shields for better protections. There were already so many tools during the Medieval Ages. The farming tools weren’t so advanced. Most of the tools were made by iron or wood like axe, hammer, handsaw and adaze.

Recreation: They had a lot of activities for entertainment. There were sports like bowling, archery. They also did wrestling. There were ceremonies like religious festivals, usually like a dinner party. There were Jousting tournaments, also music. They used instruments like flutes, mandora.

Religion: Most of the people during Medieval Ages were Catholic. The Pope was the head of the church. In the lower ranks were Cardinals, Archbishops, and Bishops. The Bible was in Latin and mostly only priests could speak Latin so the priests had to translate it for other people. Friars’ job was to help other people if they could. When people caught illness, they could come to the Monasteries to get medicines because friars could make medicines using herbs. If they were Catholic, they had to give one-tenth of their income to the church and that’s called Tithe.

Bishops and Monks

Housing: The styles of houses were changing throughout Medieval Times. In the earlier stage, houses usually had two rooms. They were built using stone. They didn’t have any chimney. Houses for peasants were much simpler. They were constructed of sticks, covered by straw and mud. In the later stage, bricks were used to build houses, more stabled with roof tiles. They had more floors. Also for peasants, their houses got a lot more stable. Their houses were framed with timber, the walls were made by wattle and mud.

Daily life and jobs: Daily Life in the Medieval Times was based on the Feudalism System. The higher class you were, the easier life would be. There were quite a lot of jobs, one of them was, as an entertainer, Minstrels. Minstrels were musicians who went around towns on the streets to sing songs about different stories. They would perform for money, sometimes they also performed in a group. Another one was being a Baker. Bakers were quite important because bread was a staple food back in the Medieval Times. They baked different types of bread. If they were good, they would get a higher paid or they could even be invited to bake in castles.

Task 5Dear Brom, how art thou?

It is Sunday today, so I can rest at home for some time. I’m a peasant and I have to work every day from Monday to Friday. Sometimes, my day starts before the sun rises and I have to work nearly until when the sun sets. I have to pay the land renting money but I don’t have enough at the moment so I will have to pay it through the form of crops. Later today, I will have to make a linen shirt, a straw hat and a pair of trousers for myself. My family just moved into this new house recently, this house is more stable, the last house we lived in was not so stable, it collapsed once before. Our old house was made mostly of sticks, covered with straw. Our new house has a more stable frame work and the frame was made from timber and the walls were made from wattle and mud. My wife is preparing pottage for the two of us for lunch. Near the end of this month, I will have to give the tithe to the church. It’s nearly December so now I started to sow the winter corn crop. The last few months were harvesting season, cutting crops using scythe. The tools I use are really simple. Working through the full day is really tired but I got used to it.
