General Features
The Mediterranean diet consists mainly of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, legumes, olive oil as
the main source of fat, fish and limited amounts of meat, dairy products and wine. One of the basic
features of this food culture is that it is a balanced diet and poor. Balanced, since there is not
dominated by a single type of food, and poor not only because it was the food of peasants and

harvesting, fishing, animal husbandry, conservation, processing, cooking, and particularly the sharing and consumption of food. Eating together is the foundation of the cultural identity and continuity of communities throughout the Mediterranean basin. It is a moment of social exchange and communication, an affirmation and
renewal of family, group or community identity. The Mediterranean diet emphasizes values of hospitality, neighbourliness, intercultural dialogue and creativity, and a way of life guided by respect for diversity.
