    Laser cutting:

    Lasers are capable of processing a range of materials of varying thicknesses,

    both faster and with smaller kerf widths. This means that they are able to match the

    primary requirements of the semiconductor sector - quick processing times with minimal

    cracking and heat affected zones (HAZ).

    The quality of laser cutting is strongly dependent on several parameters with depth of

    focus and power stability being key. Cut speed depends on laser power and the material

    parameters. For thin-walled materials, an inconsistent laser output gives an unstable

    cutting regime, causing debris to be observed on the underside of the cut. The good beam

    quality,stable beam profile and inherent laser power stability of the fiber laser, make it an

    ideal choice for microcutting applications.For thin sheet materials the processing

    throughput will often be limited by the work handling system due to the very high straight

    line cutting speeds using the Laser. In thicker materials cutting with a Laser leads to anexcellent edge quality with very low heat affected zone and little, or no,dross, thus

    requiring minimal post processing.

    Solid state Nd:YAG Laser and Fiber Lasers lasers can be used for laser cutting

    metals, some ceramics and plastics, and graphitecomposites. CO2 lasers are used for

    laser cutting metal, paper, wood acrylic, fabric, fiber, plastic/PVC, wood,leather,, and

    other non-metals. Laser cutting glass can also be carried out in the same way.

    Laser drilling

    Percussion laser drilling means adjusting the lasersfocusspot sizeto determine the hole

    size. There is no relative motion between the laser beam and the part during the drilling

    process. The parameters and number of pulses are chosen to produce a good quality hole.

    Laser driling holes in the 25m to 1000m diameter range is possible using this method but

    the limits vary according to the material. Most percussion drilled holes are in the 300m-

    600m diameter range.

    The JK Lasers range of pulsed Nd:YAG lasers drill metals, coated metals, some ceramics,

    and graphitecomposites. These lasers create discretepulsesof controllable energy, peak

    power, and temporal profile (or shape) which are well suited for drilling. It is the controlof these pulses that make the pulsed YAG such a versatile laser drilling system. The key tolaser drilling with a pulsed YAG is the peak power. Even a lower average power pulsed YAG

    laser can drill well since the interaction with the material is defined by the peak power and

    pulse energy parameters with average power having little effect.

    The laser has been designed to offer outstanding peak power levels, maximum pulse

    energy and an improved beam quality. The class leading beam is capable of producing high

    quality hole profiles, whilst the high intensity laser spots allow for fast drilling. A new

    resonator design provides a much wider operating window than previous drilling lasers in

    this class, allowing users a more flexible approach to manufacturing parameters andshorter times to optimise a new process.

    In addition to the physical advantages, the enhanced JK604 can be integrated with

    the unique Laserview technology, allowing for tighter process control and complete cycle

    programming triggered by a single command. Manufacturers can also benefit from reduced

    costs when utilising the pulse shaping feature via our patented switch-mode power supply.

    Laser welding is usually done without filler metals so parts need to have good fit-up

    with a gap less than 15% of the thickness of the thinnest component. Parts should be

    relatively clean since the welding is very fast with no time to burn-out contaminants.

    Shield gas is required for more reactive metals but many alloys can be welded in air. It can

    weld various metals within deep 4mm.

    l No post processing requiredWelding trials were carried out to develop optimum speeds for the

    production of full penetration melt runs. Welding speeds were adjusted to producewelds with consistent topbead and underbead having minimal spattering. Gas

    shielding for the weld topbead was supplied coaxially. In all cases, nitrogen

    (15l/min) was used for shielding. For both welding and cutting the laser beam was

    focused at the workpiece surface.It was found possible to weld both SS and LCS up

    to 2mm thick using the laser. The small spot size enables very high welding speeds

    between 3 and 5 times faster than achievable with traditional lower beam quality

    lasers. This small spot size also leads to minimal heat affect zone. A key feature of

    the laser range is its ability to support pulse shaping which allows elimination of

    spatter, weld porosity and cracking.
