Chapel and Community Center

Page 7: Melissa Schieffer Portfolio

To accomplish this, the plan allows for free movement throughout the building, while still being seperated into two distinct sides, Chapel and Community. Each section is defined in the roof plan of the building and in the heights of the ceiling, as well as in the materiality of the exterior.

This Chapel Community Center was set to be located on Independence Avenue in Downtown Kansas City. The idea behind the design was to create a fluid building that allowed for easy accesiblity to all sections.

Exhibition Design - Spaceview

Page 9: Melissa Schieffer Portfolio

Inside the dome will be interactive screens which allow the visiter to explore what is in space, such as black holes, galaxies, and stars. The final side will consist of what space travel will be like in the future, what vehicle will mankind be using and what humans will be wearing. The experience will give families a view into what their own space travel experience might look like.

The Spaceview Exhibit is designed to showcase the idea of middle class families traveling to space. Upon entering the exhibit, the visitor will be surrounded by the current technology and what space travel is like today.

The plan of the residence allows for seperation between public and private spaces. The downstairs contains the kitchen, the living room, and the professor’s office, which is located close to the front door to allow for students to visit and not completely enter the residence. The upstairs contains two bedrooms, a master and a guest, and an outdoor patio. The exterior allows for optimal daylighting in all spaces.

The Guest House was designed in the style of Antoine Predock, to be used by a visiting professor. It was to be placed on the UMKC campus next to the Performing Arts Center. The connection between building and Earth was fundamental in Predock’s style. Therefore, each piece of the building reaches out to its environment.

Nurturing Possibilities

Page 19: Melissa Schieffer Portfolio

When entering Nuturing Possibilities, patients and clients are greeted with a warm and open environment. Directly in front of the main entry is the Reception Desk with space for a small amount of files, and supplies. To the left is a small Cafe, which creates delicious food and scents to fill the air and add to the inviting feeling. To the right is the Waiting Lounge, which provides comfortable seating while the patient waits for their Therapist to meet them at the front.

The Nature Therapy section of the building is located in the center and outermost part of the Site. The Courtyard consists of a balance course which contains Sand, Rock, Uneven Stone and Asphalt with cracks. The Lake Overlook allows for seating by the water but not in it. From the overlook, a patient can experinece the calming sound of the water lapping up onto the shore, while still being protected from falling in the water.

Nurturing Possibilities focuses on Three different types of Therapy: Physical,

Aquatic, and Nature Therapy. To facilitate the needs of these programs,

special facilities are needed. The Physical Therapy section of the building includes

multiple exam rooms, as well as a gym and physical therapy area.

The Aquatic Therapy section of the building has a large natatorium which in

cludes a 3 lane lap pool, a warm and cold water pool and an endless pool with a

current. This area is surrounded by locker rooms and therapist offices and is only

accessible from one door which is located by these offices for security.
