LAST TIME OUT The Sabres went 2-0 last week with wins over Wisconsin Lutheran and Dominican to extend their winning streak to nine straight. Marian is now 15-1 over its last 16 games. Last week, the Sabres shot nearly 58 percent from the field, while holding the Warriors and Stars to a combined 36.7 percent from the field. Against Wisconsin Lutheran, Cody Veleke led four Sabres in double figures with 13 points, while Jeff Harris and Josh Creed added 11 points each, followed by Drew Binversie, who chipped in 10. Marian led by four points at halftime and was able to pull away with free throws in the final minute for a double-digit win that seemed much closer. The hot-shooting continued at Dominican as the Sabres went 64.8 percent from the field and 13 players reached the scoring column. Marian used an 18-0 run early on and raced to a 47-22 advantage at halftime. The lead would reach as many as 37 points in the second half as Sam Koslowski and Creed tied for a game-high 14 points, while Carvell Oliver added a career-high 13 off the bench. SCOUTING THE RAIDERS MSOE has won 13 of its last 15 games and enters the week with a three-game winning streak following home wins against Aurora and Edgewood, as well as, a road victory at Rockford last Saturday. The Raiders sit 16-4 overall, 11-4 in the NACC and still with a chance for the top spot as they trail Marian by three games in the standings. The Raiders have hung their on the defensive end this season, leading the league in points per game allowed at 69 ppg. They rank third from the three-point stripe (36.6 percent) and fourth in field goal percentage (46.3). Sophomore Austin Stueck has had some big games already this season, eclipsing 20 points on 10 separate occasions, while ranking third in the league at 19 ppg. He’s the lone player averaging in double figures for the Raiders as Connor Patterson and Jeremiah Erdmann aren’t far off with 9.6 and 9.2 ppg, respectively. Patterson adds a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game, while John Cording comes in at 8.8 points and a team-best 4.8 assists per contest.

ALL-TIME VERSUS MSOE The Sabres and Raiders will meet for the 50th time in the all-time series. Marian currently leads the series with a record of 36-13 and has won three straight meetings dating back to 2012. Marian swept the series last season with a 55-51 win on the road, Dec. 5, and a 59-47 win at home, Jan. 23. The Sabres registered a 62-53 win at home over the Raiders back on Dec. 3 of this season. Marian used a 24-9 advantage in bench scoring and a solid effort down the stretch to earn the victory. Sam Koslowski and Cody Veleke scored 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Elan Solvik turned in a career-high 11 rebounds and Montrell Hobbs added 10 points and six boards in the win. Austin Stueck was the lone Raider in double figures, scoring 12 of his game-high 18 points in the first half. MSOE shot just 38.8 percent, while the Sabres registered a healthy 44 percent from the field. Prior to Marian’s three-game win streak, MSOE had put together a stretch of five wins in seven meetings dating back to the 2006-07 season.

A LOOK AT THE SPARTANS Aurora University enters the week with a 13-7 overall mark, including a 10-5 record in league play. The Spartans have dropped two of their last four games, having fallen of late to Lakeland and MSOE which resulted in season sweeps against both league opponents. They bounced back in their most recent contest with a 105-71 shellacking of Rockford at home. Brandon Smith led five Spartans in double figures with 19 points. Aurora is the second-highest scoring team in the league, averaging 82.9 ppg on 45.8 percent shooting, which ranks sixth. The Spartans make a league-best 7.7 three’s per game, but are just 64 percent from the foul line, which is 10th. Opponents average a league-worst 42.1 percent shooting against Aurora. The Spartans have been without their leading scorer, sophomore Tyler Hall, who averages 15.8 ppg and has missed the last seven games due to injury. Four other Spartans average double figures with Collin Craft, Scott Laskowski, Kalmon Stokes and Smith all turning in around 13.5 ppg. Laskowski adds 7.0 rpg, while Gavin Walker chips in 4.6 apg.

SERIES HISTORY The Sabres and Spartans will meet for the 12th time in the all-time series, with Aurora holding the 8-3 edge following a 106-101 victory at home back on Dec. 20. In their last meeting, the Sabres suffered their lone conference loss after Aurora turned in an impressive 61.7 percent shooting performance. Marian trailed by double-digits late in the second half before Sam Koslowski and Drew Binversie keyed a run that would cut the deficit to one point inside of a minute. The Spartans, led by Scott Laskowski’s 26 points, would salt the game away at the foul line. Koslowski led the Sabres with 24 points, while Binversie chipped in 20. Marian snapped a four-game losing skid to Aurora with a 76-70 win at home in the last meeting in Fond du Lac back on Jan. 19, 2013.

KOSLOWSKI, SABRES FEATURED ON FOX11-GREEN BAY Senior Sam Koslowski suffered a career-threatening ACL injury as a senior at St. Mary’s Central in Neenah. He wasn’t sure about his basketball future until a letter from Coach Mark Boyle inspired him to recovery and towards becoming a member of the Marian University men’s basketball program. Watch the feature, courtesy of Fox11’s Jude Wilbers.

BOYLE APPEARS ON D3HOOPS.COM’S “HOOPSVILLE” Head Coach Mark Boyle made his first-ever appearance on D3Hoops.com’s “Hoopsville,” a radio show dedicated to Division III basketball and hosted by Dave McHugh. Boyle discussed the impressive turnaround from a 2010-11 squad that went 4-21 to the team’s 14-4 start at the time of the interview, Jan. 26. You can listen to the archived audio by clicking this link (Fast-forward to 36:45 to hear Boyle’s interview): Hoopsville - Jan. 26

OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION The Sabres scored 80 or more points in three consecutive games between Dec. 20, 2013-Jan. 11, 2014, going 2-1 in that span. After falling to Aurora, 106-101, Marian rebounded with an 82-74 win over Benedictine (Jan. 4) and an 83-70 victory over Rockford (Jan. 11). It marked the first time the Sabres scored 80 or more points in three straight games since Dec. 4-16, 2007. In those three games, Marian defeated Lakeland, Concordia Wisconsin and Wisconsin Lutheran - all at home - on the way to a 15-11 overall record, including an 11-6 mark in conference play. So far this season, Marian has eclipsed 80 points seven times and is averaging 76.8 ppg through 20 games. It’s the most a Marian team has averaged in a season since the 2007-08 season when the Sabres averaged 74.1 ppg and is 6.1 points more than last year’s squad.

MAGIC NUMBERS When the Sabres score 70 or more points in a game this season they are 13-2. Since the beginning of the 2012-13 season, Marian is 24-4 in games it has scored 70 points or more. Since last season, the Sabres are 24-2 when tied or leading at halftime, including 13-0 this season. Marian has three victories when trailing at halftime (MSOE, WLC & Edgewood).

TWO SABRES ECLIPSE 1,000-POINT PLATEAU Senior forward Cody Veleke and senior guard Jeff Harris reached a milestone only 14 Sabres had before them. Veleke, who dons the #15 became the 15th member of the 1,000-point club when he led the Sabres with 24 points and 11 rebounds in an 84-82 overtime victory at Wisconsin Lutheran on Dec. 5. It was his seventh career double-double. Harris eclipsed the milestone just before halftime of a 76-61 victory over Concordia Chicago at home Saturday, Dec. 14. Fellow senior Sam Koslowski is just 34 points away from becoming the third Sabre this year to reach the mark. He needs to average just 6.8 points per game over the final five regular season games or would need just three more games if he maintained his 14.5 ppg season average. If he does, Marian will have done what only three known teams have accomplished since the 1996-97 season by having three or more players reach the coveted milestone in the same season.

THE KEY TO VICTORY Marian is 12-0 this season when out-rebounding its opponents and holds a +2.8 margin on the year. In those wins, the Sabres are +109 on the glass combined compared to -28 on the short-end. Last season, the Sabres went 10-3 when out-rebounding their opponents and finished the year with a -0.7 rebound margin.

LAST OF THE NACC UNBEATENS The Sabres made it further than any other team in the NACC before losing its first conference game, going 6-0 before a narrow 106-101 defeat at Aurora back on Dec. 20. Now 7-1 to start NACC play, this year’s squad owns the best league start in program history since the league’s inception in 2006-07. In only his second year at the helm, Head Coach Mark Boyle led the 1989-90 team to a 10-0 start in the Lake Michigan Conference on the way to a 13-1 regular season championship.

GRAND OPENING Marian snapped a five-game losing streak in conference openers and a three-game skid in conference home openers when it defeated Dominican, 71-63, Saturday, Nov. 30. The previous 1-0 start in league play occurred back on Nov. 28, 2007 when the Sabres went to River Forest and beat Concordia Chicago, 70-66. The previous win in a conference home opener was back on Dec. 5, 2009 when the Sabres beat Dominican, 81-68, behind 31 points from Logan Rankin (‘10).

FOR THE 41ST TIME Marian University men’s basketball opened its 41st season in program history when it defeated Martin Luther College by a score of 79-70 back on Nov. 16. Men’s basketball played its first season at Marian back in 1972-73.

WHAT IT REALLY “BOYLES” DOWN TO Head Coach Mark Boyle, who is in his 26th season at the helm of the Marian University men’s basketball program, has compiled 333 career victories and captured four conference championships on the Sabre sidelines. The Madison native took over the program in 1988-89 and led the team to a Lake Michigan Conference tournament championship. He arrived in Fond du Lac by way of UW-Green Bay, where he served as assistant under legendary coach Dick Bennett for three seasons. Boyle graduated from UW-Eau Claire. Boyle is currently the longest-tenured college coach in the state of Wisconsin.

COMING BACK FOR MORE The Sabres feature 12 returners from their 2012-13 squad that finished 15-11 overall, 10-6 in the NACC, which was good enough for the fifth-best league mark. Five seniors highlight the slew of returners, including captains Sam Koslowski and 2012-13 First Team selection Cody Veleke. The entire projected starting lineup remains intact with a mix of youth and veteran leadership. Sophomores Alex Stecker and Drew Binversie made immediate impacts as freshmen last season, while junior Mike Keller is coming off his second straight season as the defensive backbone for the Sabres. Three seniors in James Bartelt, Jeff Harris and Elan Solvik will lead a deep and talented bench.

A PROGRAM FIRST For the first time in school history, Marian had the opportunity to compete against an NCAA Division I institution in UW-Milwaukee in an exhibition contest back on Oct. 31. The game took place at the Panthers’ home arena, the U.S. Cellular Arena in downtown Milwaukee. The Sabres led for the first 10 minutes of the game before the Panthers imposed their will with unmatched size and athleticism en route to an 80-52 victory. Other Notable Division I vs. non-Division I match-ups that took place:• UW-Platteville men took on UW-Madison, Oct. 30.• NAIA’s Viterbo men traveled to UW-Green Bay, Nov. 3.• Rockford men played Northern Illinois, Nov. 2.• Concordia Chicago men competed at UConn, Nov. 4.• Wis. Lutheran’s women faced UW-Milwaukee, Nov. 3.• Division II Winona State took on UW-Madison, Nov. 3• UW-Stevens Point women visited UW-Madison, Nov. 7.

SCHEDULE The 2013-14 schedule will be as challenging as ever with four of Marian’s five non-conference games taking place on the road. Following a season opening home match-up with Martin Luther, which Marian needed double-overtime to get past a season ago, the final four non-league bouts will be played away from the friendly confines of Sadoff Gymnasium. The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference has altered its format, getting away from two divisions to a single division format that features 22 conference games, which is six more than last season. All 12 teams will play each other twice followed by a six-team league tournament slated to begin the final week in February.

PRESEASON POLL The Marian University men’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the 2013-14 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Preseason Poll, voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. The Sabres, who turned in the fifth-best regular season record a season ago with a 15-11 overall mark and a 10-6 league record, earned 184 poll points, including three of the 22 first-place votes handed out by the voters. Aurora was the selected as the preseason favorite, garnering 223 poll points, including 12 first-place votes. Lakeland was picked second with 211 poll points and seven first-place votes.2013-14 NACC Preseason Coaches’ and SIDs’ Poll1. Aurora (12), 2232. Lakeland (7), 2113. Marian (3), 1844. MSOE, 1615. Few teams have the luxury of returning all five starters and fewer teams can say they have five seniors, who are proven contributors. Head Coach Mark Boyle has both as he prepares for what hopes to be a

successful and exciting season at the helm of the Marian University men’s basketball program. Entering his 26th season, Boyle is the longest-tenured coach in the state of Wisconsin and believes this year may be the first time he returns all five starters to his lineup. The Sabres, who finished 15-11 in 2012-13, including a 10-6 mark in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, had the fifth-best record in the league, but were reduced to the eighth seed in the tournament due to seeding rules amidst the two divisions. Marian then fell to top-seeded Lakeland on the road in a disappointing finish to an otherwise successful season. “They know each other and they know what it takes to win,” Boyle said of his experienced squad. “We want to secure a tournament home game and, if things fall into place, this team could even be capable of being in the race for the regular season title.” For the first time since its inception in 2006, the NACC will introduce a

new scheduling format that features a 20-game league schedule with all 11 teams playing each other twice under one division, followed by an eight-team postseason tournament. Looking to guide this senior laden squad is guard Sam Koslowski (Neenah, Wis./St. Mary’s Central), who has emerged as the team’s guiding voice after averaging in double figures and starting all 26 games for the Sabres a year ago. “[Sam’s] competitive nature and understanding of the game has earned the respect of his teammates as the leader of this team,” Boyle stated. Alongside him is

fellow senior Cody Veleke (Oakfield, Wis./Oakfield), who led the Sabres in scoring, rebounding, blocks, steals and field goal percentage, earned All-Conference accolades for the second straight season, including All-NACC First Team honors in 2012-13. “Cody has proven to be one of the top post players in the conference with his solid and consistent play,” Boyle said. As for Boyle’s guard play, it’s as stable and consistent as any team in the conference with sophomores Alex Stecker (Oostburg, Wis./Oostburg) and Drew Binversie (Valders, Wis./Valders) returning after receiving All-Freshmen Team nods a season ago. It was the first time in program history that the Sabres had put two on the All-Freshmen Team. Stecker led the team in assists (99), as well as, free throw percentage (90.7) and three-point percentage (45.6) after starting all 26 games as the team’s point guard. “Alex gets our offense going,” Boyle said. “He has high basketball intelligence and we expect him to be the floor general and trigger the offense.” Binversie proved early on that he deserved a starting role and went on to register 10 double-digit scoring performances including three 20-plus-point games.

“Drew has shown to be a real playmaker,” Boyle said. “He had a major impact in a lot of games last season, which is rare for a freshman. He can have an effect in the outcome of a game in a number of ways.” Junior forward Mike Keller (Oostburg, Wis./Oostburg) is what Coach Boyle calls the team’s “X-Factor”. Keller was Freshman of the Year in the NACC two years ago and has showed no signs of slowing down. “He helps bring us together as a unit through communication and the willingness to do the little things,” Boyle said. “He’s added a dimension to his game this season that will force defenses to stay honest.” What makes this team dangerous is the depth off their bench as the Sabres feature three seniors ready to carry the load in Elan Solvik (Port Townsend, Wash./Port Townsend), Jeff Harris (Chicago, Ill./Richards) and James Bartelt (Madison, Wis./East). Solvik showed last year his ability to run the point, while providing a change of pace that will give defenses a different look. Harris and Bartelt are both a year removed from competitive basketball, but seem to have picked up right where they left off in 2012. The former will add a much-needed scoring threat off the bench, while the latter looks to provide consistency in the post. “To have Jeff back, knowing what he’s shown to be capable of as a scoring threat and experienced guard, could be similar to having an ace in the hole,” Boyle said. “James has been a pleasant surprise, improving despite missing all of last year due to injury.” Other returners in the mix will be three-point specialist Brad Koth (Butte des Morts, Wis./Winneconne) and the high-energy Alex Gomez (Belvidere, Ill./North), as well as, Dickie Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and Carvell Oliver (Manitowoc, Wis./Lincoln). Boyle’s staff has brought in six newcomers looking to make a name for themselves. “I’m really pleased with the ability of our new guys, the amount of information they have absorbed already, and the kind of attitude and effort they provide at practice every day,” Boyle said. “As a group, it’s obvious they are making a sincere effort and have earned the respect of their teammates through hard work.” Two that should make an immediate impact for the Sabres will be Josh Creed (Chicago, Ill./Brother Rice) and Montrell Hobbs (Milwaukee, Wis./Rufus King), who have shown athleticism and the ability to understand how the offense is run at an early stage. Also vying for minutes will be Carlyle Howard (Chicago, Ill./Rich Central), Brandon McCullum (Joliet, Ill/West), Josh Oros (Montgomery, Ill./Oswego) and Brant Nickel (Waupun, Wis./Waupun). As is the case with Boyle-coached teams, the non-conference schedule is going to be a challenging one that prepares the team for league play and this year is no different. “I like our non-conference schedule a lot,” Boyle said. “We’ll face teams that will challenge us and prepare us in a number of ways.” The Sabres begin the year Nov. 16, with a home game against Martin Luther, a team they battled to a double-overtime victory on the road a season ago. Three challenges then await the Sabres away from home with a rivalry game at Ripon (Nov. 20) followed by a match-up with Luther (Nov. 22) to open up the Bethel tournament in Minnesota. The Sabres will then take on either UW-Eau Claire or host Bethel in the tournament finale (Nov. 23). Dominican will invade Sadoff Gymnasium Nov. 30, which will kick-off a demanding, 20-game league schedule. “It’s going to be tough,” Boyle said. “The rigor of playing everyone twice brings up the level of competition and teams are really going to have to outlast one another to win the league. It will surely be a test of endurance.”

Senior Cody Veleke currently ranks 17th on the Marian all-time scoring list.
