Dear Chastain Cousins,

This issue of the Chastain Chatter is primarilydevoted to Memorial Day and especiallyremembering our family members who servedin the military. Even the news and obituariesthis time are about our veterans.

There are a few other things in this issue, also.I encourage you to note the announcements inSection 2 calling for names of recentgraduates (both high school and college) andinformation about the upcoming PierreChastain Family Association reunion inRichmond, Virginia.

I’ve also included a couple genealogical tipsfor locating military information in Sections 3and 4. At the end of each ‘tip’ there is a link tothe website where I found the information. That website is a very helpful resource foranyone doing family tree research.

Since we changed mailing services, we arenow able to include photos in the ChastainChatter. As you will see when you read thisissue, we may make good use of this newfeature.

A special thanks goes out to Ron Robertswho spent more than a few hours figuring outhow to insert the photos of all of the veteransbeing remembered in the right place.

I’d love to hear from you; I especiallyappreciate comments suggestions, questions, stories, information, etc. to include in futureissues.

To contact me, send e-mails [email protected] and [email protected].

Love and peace,

(Karyl Chastain Beal, Spring Hill, Tennessee.)

If any of your Chastain family members graduated from high school or college this month (May)or plan to graduate this summer, if you send me their names, a little information about them, itwould be nice to have a “Congratulations to Graduates” section in an upcoming issue of ChastainChatter.

(Information about graduates would include their names, names of their parents, school name, date of graduation, type of degree if they received a degree, future plans, etc.)

MENUMilitary records can often provide valuable information about the veteran as well as about

other members of the veteran’s family. Researching military records may be time-consuming, butthey may be well worth the effort.

The first challenge will be figuring out how to begin and which records to search. Thefollowing information comes from the National Archives website, however, I’ve only copied a littlebit of it to give you a feel for what is there. If you click the link below, you will find informationabout all sorts of military records, in addition to links to click so you can request specificdocuments, including records from every war American’s have been involved in since theAmerican Revolution.

How do I begin? There is no simple explanation for how to begin research in military records. Your research

path will depend on aspects such as:

1) What branch of service your ancestor was in2) Which conflict3) What dates4) Whether Regular Army or a volunteer unit5) Whether your ancestor was an officer or enlisted personnel, 6) Whether there was a pension application.

4. Genealogy Tip: Three types of Military Records

MENU

How can Military Records help in my genealogy research?Military records can often provide valuable information on the veteran, as well as on all membersof the family. For example:

! Compiled Service Records:Compiled service records consist of an envelope containing card abstracts taken frommuster rolls, returns, pay vouchers, and other records. They will provide you with yourancestor's rank, unit, date mustered in and mustered out, basic biographical information, medical information, and military information.

! Pension Applications and Pension Payment Records:The National Archives also has pension applications and records of pension payments forveterans, their widows, and other heirs.

! The pension records in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. are based onservice in the armed forces of the United States between 1775 and 1916. Pensionapplication files usually provide the most genealogical information.

! These files often contain supporting documents such as: narratives of events duringservice, marriage certificates, birth records, death certificates, pages from family Bibles, family letters, depositions of witnesses, affidavits, discharge papers and other supportingpapers.

! Bounty Land:Bounty land warrant application files relate to claims based on wartime service between1775 and March 3, 1855. If your ancestor served in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812,early Indian Wars, or the Mexican War, a search of these records may be worthwhile.

! Bounty land records often contain documents similar to those in pension files, with lots ofgenealogical information. Many of the bounty land application files relating toRevolutionary War and War of 1812 service have been combined with the pension files.

5. Memorial Day or Decoration Day

MENU

Memorial Day or Decoration Day is afederal holiday in the United States forremembering the people who died whileserving in the country's armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observedevery year on the last Monday of May,will be held on May 28, 2018. Theholiday was held on May 30 from 1868to 1970.

Memorial Day is not to be confused withVeterans Day – Memorial Day is a day ofremembering the men and women whodied while serving, whereas VeteransDay celebrates the service of all U.S.military veterans.

The preferred name for the holidaygradually changed from "DecorationDay" to "Memorial Day," which was firstused in 1882. Memorial Day did notbecome the more common name untilafter World War II, and was not declaredthe official name by Federal law until1967. On June 28, 1968, Congresspassed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act,which moved four holidays, includingMemorial Day, from their traditionaldates to a specified Monday in order tocreate a convenient three-day weekend. The change moved Memorial Day fromits traditional May 30 date to the lastMonday in May. The law took effect atthe federal level in 1971. After someinitial confusion and unwillingness tocomply, all 50 states adopted Congress'change of date within a few years.

My father (a descendant of Pierre Chastain through his son, David, grandson, David, and great-granddaughter Elizabeth Chastain) wasTazwell Birk Wingfield, flight officer and navigator on a B-17 flyingout of Rougham air field near Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England, whose plane was disabled near Mannheim on its 3rd mission (overMunich). Their B-17 Flying Fortress,"Gloria" (aka "Filthy Hag")#42102457, had mechanical failure and (guided by him) landed inDubendorf, Switzerland on 12 July 1944, where he was interned atCamp Davos Platz for 8+ months. At first he was listed as M.I.A.;repatriated late March 1945.

My father enlisted in the US Army Air Corps in 1943. He had worked at a newspaper and likedto paint and draw cartoons. While a Swiss internee, he learned German, was involved in a localMethodist church and their youth group, painted, took long walks, and ice skated a lot.

He later used the GI bill to obtain 2 college degrees in education from Florida Southern Collegeand Stetson University. He had a career as an elementary school teacher and principal in centralFlorida.

After retirement, he had a vegetable garden, researched his family tree (whose Wingfieldsactually originated in Suffolk, England--where he flew from), and joined 94th Bomb GroupMemorial Association and the Swiss internees Association. He was a Sunday Schoolsuperintendent in the Methodist Church in Tavares, Florida for 36 years.

a) Once in a Lifetime: A WWII Veteran’s StoryBy Josh Roe, June 8, 2016, WTVC Cleveland, Tennessee

(WTVC) Cleveland, TN — Many of ournation's combat veterans go their entire life, and never tell the stories of what they saw inwar. Mitchell Chastain is a combat veteran .In 2004. just before his deployment to a warzone, his grand father told him his story offighting World War II.

Mitchell had never heard the story before, andas far as he knows this was the only time hisgrandfather ever told that story.

"As a child he knew I always wanted to knowabout how he was wounded, and whathappened," Mitchell Chastain said. "At thatpoint he decided to tell me basically whatoccurred."

The first thing Clifford Chastain wanted hisgrand son to know was he was no hero. "Onthe 21st day of January of 1945 they were ontop of a mountain in Luxembourg," It was theBattle of the Bulge.

"He remembered the date sixty years later. Heremembered the exact time which I thoughtagain was pretty unique," Mr. Chastain said."He said they came along and told them at 3o'clock in the afternoon they were going to getup out of their fox holes, and they were goingto charge across the field. They weren't goingto stop."

It was an intense day of fighting, and theycame to a point where a field separated theUS soldiers and the German Forces. Duringthat charge Clifford Chastain was shotthrough the arm.

"They told him that they couldn't do anythingmore for him there." Mr. Chastain said. "There

was a town down below the mountain." SoClifford Chastain started walking.

"He made it to the aid station," Mr. Chastainsaid. "He said there were so many woundedthere." They wouldn't treat him, and sent himaway. He wandered around the town for awhile at one point he lied down in a door step, and he said almost died there.

"He started thinking about my dad who wasjust a baby at that time. He really didn't knowmy dad that well, and his little girl at home andhis wife," Mr. Chastain said. "He said that gothim thinking. He said he made himself getback up because he decided he was not goingto die in that door step."

He eventually got help. He was sent tohospital in France. He got patched up a bit,and was sent back out to the battle. "At thattime he said he turned over. He said nosooner had he turned over that a round hittrees above him, and showered the fox holeand everything with shrapnel and so forth," Mr.Chastain said.

He was hit in the other arm , and that injurytook him out of the war. He was awarded aBronze star, and received two purple hearts.

"My hats off to all of those guys who served inWorld War II. Sometimes I think we take forgranted what they actually did." Mr. Chastainsaid.

Clifford Chastain .came back home had fivemore Children, seven total. Mitchell Chastaintold this story at his grand father's funeral, andother than his father none of the other ofClifford Chastain's children or grand childrenhad ever heard the story.
