Flying Activity: December is one of the busy months of the year for everyone with the approaching Festive Season

capturing most of our spare time. Rainy days before the

Christmas break curtailed much of the flying but post Christmas

gave us the flying weather to get airborne again. Five Whitianga

aircraft made the dash to the NAC BBQ lunch at Whananaki

making it one of the

biggest arrivals up

there to date with

around 27 aircraft

arriving. Thank you

Martin for the

invitation lunch and

success in keeping the weather fine!

The fine weather also encouraged

many Whitianga visitors into the

air with their friends who own

aircraft here as well as a number of others who took the Trial Flight options available through MBAC.

The Christmas Parade for

Whitianga also involved

another exercise with our

RV 12 being loaded onto

Dale’s low loader trailer,

after the wings were

removed by our volunteer group of enthusiasts, and then towed

in the Parade by the Mercury Bay Area School bus driven by Head Master John Wright, to capture the

association that the school has with our MBAC mentoring group in building RV12’s.

Notices from committee:

Hangarage seems to be the main topic these days so get those

requests in if you are wanting / waiting for hangarage for your aircraft.

Works have commenced and great progress made before the

Christmas break.

New Taxiway

signs have been

placed to assist with entry into the refuelling / apron

area. A is now closest to the Clubhouse and B is further

out by the hangars to the east. C is the furthest away from

the Clubhouse, but the first one when leaving the landing

runway 22.

C should only be used for entry to the hangars associated

with this taxiway as soft ground off this entry, towards the Clubhouse, could cause aircraft to get bogged.

MBA flew 24.2 hours in December. A little better than normal!

Roof on!

Clubhouse Carpark has now been resurfaced wih a

hotmix asphalt coat ready for summer traffic.

Driveway repairs have been completed beside the main

hangar where a burst water main required the new

concrete to be broken to carry out the necessary

repairs.

Whitianga Aviation Events

The Great Northern Air Race is lunch stopping

again this year in Whitianga on 27 January as they

race each other around the upper North Island.

A fun event for those who wish to participate but

also a spectacle to see the arrivals and departures

as they all top up their fuel tanks and eat their

lunch on the stopover.

Annual inspections are well under way as all of our aircraft owners are getting their

inspections carried out in time to enjoy the summer fun of aviating here and there.

“Welcome aboard Southwest Flight 245 to Tampa. To operate your seat belt, insert the metal tab

into the buckle and pull tight. It works just like every other seat belt and, if you don’t know how to

operate one, you probably shouldn’t be out in public unsupervised!

Happy Summer Season

Mercury Bay Summer Concert

This event is a BIG one for

WHITIANGA.

It may put pressure on the parking arrangements for

those of you who are flying in, as that is the same day

as the Great Northern Air Race arrival and so the fuel

pumps must be easily accessed for all aircraft.

Last year had Air Race aircraft coming off runway 22

and stopping at Taxiway B as they exited the runway.

We may need to keep overnighting aircraft for the

Summer Concert further way towards the AIRPARK

area as there is ample room on the grass fingers/aprons

that can be used for parking.
