Areas Your Gift Supported Source of Gifts Chelsea Walker’s first big victory came when she learned that she’d been crowned Miss Southeast Oklahoma at the end of October 2015. Only two weeks later,

she suffered her first debilitating migraine, and then another. At first she attributed the headaches to a sinus infection. But with a high fever, a swollen eye and persistent vomiting, she found herself in the emergency room of her local Ada hospital at three in the morning. “Thankfully for me,” said Chelsea, “That hospital was Mercy.”

Thanks to Mercy telemedicine, Chelsea’s CT scan in Ada was

reviewed instantly by one of the best neurologists in Oklahoma City who diagnosed a neurological abscess. Her parents by her side, Chelsea was transported by ambulance to Oklahoma City to the waiting group of medical professionals, who in her words, “would serve as my lifeline for the next six weeks.”

At Mercy Oklahoma City, the team of neurologists put Chelsea on an intense course of antibiotics. After six weeks the abcess had shrunken enough to allow her to return home to recuperate. Chelsea lists her second big victory as the day when she received the all clear from her Mercy medical teams in Ada and Oklahoma City.

said Chelsea. “At the top of my list was to spread the virtues of healthy living and, now, my story of surviving a life-altering medical crisis.”

Chelsea graduated from the University of Oklahoma in May 2016, and impressed by the lasting impact of her experience at Mercy, she is pursuing a career in philanthropy. In fact, she is currently the graduate intern for Mercy Health Foundation Ada!

“Reflecting back on my experience at Mercy, I’ve come to realize that serving others is an honored privilege and not a duty,” says Chelsea. “Everyone at Mercy was really genuine in their service. They were there to take care of me, not just do a job. I hope to live up to that tradition of service.”

Lifesaving DonationsThanks to a generous grant from Valley View Health and Wellness Foundation (VVHWF), Mercy Health Foundation Ada was able to purchase some much-needed lifesaving equipment this year.

• Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) can mean the difference between life and death for someone experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. The electrical shock from an AED can often restore the heart’s normal rhythm, but speed is crucial, so proximity matters. In 2016, VVHWF donated $70,000 to fund the installation of 40 wall-mounted Mercy AEDs across Ada in local schools, city buildings and first responder locations.

• High school athletes suffer thousands of concussions each year, but a new system is designed to help reduce concussion and mitigate repetitive impact. Using this software, every athlete takes a baseline test at the beginning of the

season, then when injury occurs, an offsite physician compares new test results to the baseline to determine medical treatment. VVHWF awarded Mercy Health Foundation Ada over $15,000 for the purchase and implementation of Concussion ImPACT in all local high schools.

The VVHWF promotes health and wellness in Ada and surrounding areas. Mercy Health Foundation Ada is grateful to VVHWF for their commitment and dedication to the community. The AEDs and Concussion ImPACT technology donations will help keep our student athletes and Ada citizens who experience a cardiac event safer than ever before.
