2017 Lovelight ProjectThis year Mercy Hospital Auxiliary celebrates 26 years of the Lovelight Project. This is a major fundraiser for the Auxiliary as contributions support Mercy Hospital and Mercy Living Plus. The Mercy Living Plus Resident Council decided to purchase a lovelight from the Auxiliary as a memorial and a gesture of friendship from the Mercy Living Plus residents. The lighting ceremony will be Sunday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m. in the front lobby of the hospital. Activities planned include Christmas songs, sharing of Christmas customs, and a prayer. The residents enjoy being a part of this celebration. If interested in purchasing a Lovelight contact Dawn Kendall (319-283-4733). The minimum donation per light is $5.00. A large light on the star can be purchased for $25.00.

Secret SantaThis year each of the staff and some volunteers have chosen a resident to buy a Secret Santa gift for. These gifts will be distributed by Santa’s helpers on Christmas morning when they get up for breakfast.

December 5 – St. Nicholas EveIn European countries it is the custom for people to leave their shoes outside their doors and St. Nicholas will fill their shoes with treats that evening. The residents will be asked to place their shoes outside their doors after suppoer. Residents will wake up with some shiny clean shoes and a special treat from St. Nicholas.

Live NativityWe will be having a live Nativity with our fourth grade readers on Wednesday, December 20 at 2:00 p.m. The residents are excited to watch the children and community singers join in on a very nice afternoon as Chaplain Michal reads the story of the Nativity.

December 17 at 7:00 p.m.: Williams Center for the Arts – Christmas with the Celts First there was Riverdance and now there is Christmas with the Celts. It isn’t just a concert; it’s a celebration of the Holiday Spirit

Christmas MealOur Traditional Christmas Meal will be served on Monday, December 25. If you would like to eat with your loved one that day please sign up at the Nurses’ Station. The cost of the meal is $6.00 per person. Meals can be paid for when the reservation is made. Reservations can be paid for 11:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. We are offering two different times to accommodate everyone. Please sign up by Monday, December 11. The meals will be served in the cafeteria on first floor. There is also a place to sign up if you are taking someone out for a meal.

Family Christmas PartyMark your calendars for the Family Christmas Party at Mercy Living Plus on Thursday, December 15th at 2:00 p.m. Due to limited seating residents can only invite two guests, RSVP by Friday, December 9th. Family is asked to bring in one gift for their loved one for the party. Bring the wrapped gift with the loved one’s name on it and who it is from by Tuesday, December 13.th Please give it to Sue or Yvette so we can make sure every resident has a gift from Santa to give out the day of the party. If you would like to bring another gift for your loved one to open on Christmas Day, please mark it for December 25th. Music at the party will be provided by Dave Poggenklass.

Mitten TreeOur Mitten Tree will be set up in the TV area from December 1-12. The mittens will be donated to Sacred Heart School. Hats and mittens in sizes for children and adults are needed. We are thankful for the participation we have had in the past to make this annual event a success. Items will be distributed at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 12.

Veterans’ DayThe American Legion honored Mercy Living Plus Veterans. Certificates were awarded to Garrald Schroeder, Al Dresen, Dell Hanson, Kathy Lopez, Yvette Shinn, Harry Haldeman and Chaplain Michal Schemmel. There was also a flag folding ceremony.

Tour of TablesThemed tables were decorated by Mercy Hospital staff to add enjoyment for the residents at lunch time. Doing this activity before Thanksgiving brings smiles to eveyrone as the holidays begin. The tables were judged by the residents, staff and visitors.

News from SueWhat a busy month we have planned with some new and fun activities! We will begin the month with the lighting of the Lovelights on the front of the hospital. Residents, staff and community will join Mercy Auxiliary at the Lovelight Ceremony in the front lobby of the hospital on Sunday, December 3 at 6:00 p.m. Our first Bingo of the month will involve Christmas socks for prizes at the beginning of the month. Carolers will join us throughout the month. Christmas activities for the month are planned as we enjoy the Right – Left Game, Arts and Crafts by Girl Scout Troop, Christmas Charades, music by Beau Timmerman, Jake Carpenter, Jim Kinney, Dave Poggenklass, Janet Lieb, Harry Ebbeson, Dave Wirtz and Barb Roberson. We will be celebrating New Year’s Eve on Friday, December 29 at 1:30 p.m.. Remember to bring a winter coat for your loved one as we will be going out to look at Christmas lights in Oelwein and Sumner at their park, Williams Center and out to eat monthly. All of us at Mercy Living Plus wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Care Gram Award – Marilyn Root The Resident Council nominated resident Marilyn Root. Marilyn assisted with the gardening this spring, summer and fall. Puling weeds, planting plants and decorating Mercy Park kept Marilyn busy. Marilyn also assists residents who are anxious or need some one on one time. Thank you Marilyn for all you do. Recipe ClubThe Recipe Group chose a Cheeseburger Soup for December. This recipe was given to us by one of our volunteers who found it in the “Taste of Home” magazine.

1/2 lb. Ground Beef 3/4 cup Chopped Onion 3/4 cup Shredded Carrots 3/4 cup Diced Celery 1 tsp. Dried Basil 1 tsp. Dried Parsley 4 tbs. Butter

3 cups Chicken Broth 4 cups Diced Potatoes 1/4 cup Flour 2 cups Cubed Velveeta Cheese 1-1/2 cups Milk 3/4 tsp. Salt 1./4 tsp. Black Pepper

In a large pan, brown beef; drain then add onions, carrots, celery, basil and parsley with 1 tbs. butter. Saute about 10 minutes. Add broth, potatoes.

In a small pan melt remaining butter. Add flour and cook and stir for 4 minutes. Add to soup and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and add cheese, mile, salt and pepper. Cook and stir until cheese melts.

Then eat!
