We are pleased to present to you the 2012 Calendar of events for BlaCk history Month on Merseyside.

Over the last eight years, Merseyside Black History Month Group has continued to develop and work tirelessly to ensure that the recognition and celebration of Black History is promoted, supported and encouraged by all representatives of the various sectors, individuals and groups across Merseyside.

Notwithstanding the current economic climate we continue to develop Black History Month celebrations on Merseyside, with the help of our partners and sponsors. This is a remarkable achievement allowing Merseyside to be one of the few regions to continue to give a high profile to the promotion of Black History Month.

the 2012 Cultural food feast will be held on sunday 14th october at the sefton park palm house and the Black achievers awards ceremony will be held at st George’s hall on saturday 27th october.

Page 3: Merseyside Black History Month 2012 Calendar of Events

These are our two main events but we hope you will also take this opportunity to attend and celebrate other events highlighted in this calendar. We are looking forward to the 2012 celebrations as we continue to develop both the organisation and our activities. Youth and educational events play a prominent part in our work this year.

We hope you will continue to support the ethos behind the development of Black History Month activites, but remember that Black History is not constrainted to October. For example we were involved in hosting the guest of honour for this year’s Slavery Remembrance Day, Martin Luther King III, the eldest son of civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jnr, in his visit to the Liverpool Black Community. His high profi le visit has been described as “putting our region centre stage in the global fi ght for human and civil rights”.

on Behalf of our Board i Wish you a happy and eduCational oCtoBer, BlaCk history Month 2012.

A selection of recent works by Mona Hatoum.Recent works, some which have never been seen in the UK, create a thread that helps the audience to navigate several spaces of the Cunard Building and other sites. Along this journey, the viewer will be confronted by unusual mappings of the world and, most importantly, ideas of cultural dominance and political ignorance.

City of Sanctuary, 2012. Artist and activist Andrea Bowers amplifies the launch of Liverpool as a City of Sanctuary for asylum seekers and refugees.

Ponte, 2012. The Ponte building has dominated the Johannesburg skyline since the 1970s This residential block became a key symbol for the social and economic downturn that followed the arrival of social democracy in 1994. Subotzky and Waterhouse became fascinated by the fictions and myths projected onto the structure. These moments have been stitched together, resulting in an internal and external panoramic projection of this iconic structure.

Making Chinatown, 2012. Mixed media video installation. Growing up in Singapore, shortly after its independence, Ming Wong witnessed a struggle to establish a national identity and became concerned with what it meant to be Singaporean. This work explores the Hollywood tradition, deconstructing some of cinema’s most notable productions. Often becoming several characters within a single work, Wong subverts the relationship between language, identity and performance.
