MESSAGE FROM OUR MENAHEL Dear Parents, In פרשת בא, the Torah tells us of Moshe’s mission in warning פרעה to let B’nei Yisrael out of מצרים lest he be punished with more makkos. There is a מחלוקת ראשונים as to the purpose of the warnings. If ה‘ hardened the heart of to the point of him not heeding פרעהMoshe’s warning, what was the point of the warnings? The ם“רמב says his בחירה (freedom of choice) was taken away and the warnings were so he would dig deeper into his רשעות and reach a point where he was deserving of receiving the full measure of his punishment. Rashi and other ראשונים hold that although his בחירה was taken away, there s ll was the possibility of him doing teshuva. The נתיבות שלום explains this with the משל of a person who is drowning in the river and as a result taps into his hidden כוחות to save himself. Stories have been told of people li ing cars in a moment of adrenaline rush in a me of danger. Just as such hidden strengths exists during a me of physical danger, so too when a person finds him or herself in spiritual danger, one can tap into hidden strengths of character to do the right thing and make the right choices, as difficult as they may seem.

On Wednesday, when giving a pre‐vaca on chizuk דרשה to students, I explained that there is no word in Lashon Kodesh for vaca on, (חופש is עברית). A Yid is never truly on vaca on. During a me when they are not in the structured se ng of school, they may find themselves in situa on of נסיונות, where they will need to tap into those hidden כוחות to access their spiritual strength and choose the right path. Of course, we all realize how important it is to make sure not to put our children in physical or spiritual danger. Parents and teachers work at helping talmi-dim internalize their Torah השקפות. We may, at mes, put too much trust in them, giving them freedom that is too overwhelming for them to deal with. I explained to them the reality of what we all contend with on a daily basis in order to preserve our יראת שמים. Our standards are not the world’s standards. We take our values from the Torah, no ma er which direc on society shi s. We all need a me to refresh. We want the winter break to be a me that our talmidim recharge their physical and spiritual ba er‐ies. It’s a me when they can read stories of Gedolim and be inspired by stories of people in past and present genera ons, so they will be upli ed and be מחוזק. How fortunate we all are to lead lives of Torah and קדושה. Enjoy! Rabbi Berel Leiner, Menahel

YBH Teachers are Learners Literacy development is an integral com‐ ponent of the general studies program at YBH. In a classroom of diverse learners, the teacher is tasked with ge ng to know every child’s profile as a reader. Listening to a child read text at increasing levels of complexity, from material that is read effortlessly, to text that is somewhat challenging, gives the teacher a window into the strategies the child uses when encountering an unfamiliar word, how the child processes the meaning of the text and the speed and accuracy of the child’s reading. In addi on, the results can also help parents understand how their child is progressing in reading and the teacher may be able to more defini vely suggest to parents books at a “just right” level of challenge for a child based on the results of this assessment. Learning how to gather, record and analyze the data from these opportuni es to read one on one with a child requires training and prac ce.

We are fortunate that at YBH we have our own literacy coach on staff, Dr. Devorah Sasson, who works with our faculty in areas related to literacy instruc on. This week, our teachers in grades 1‐3 came in early to par cipate in a workshop led by Dr. Sasson on the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System, a tool that can be used by teachers to assess each student’s literacy status and needs. It is especially gra fying that even though this workshop was “op onal”, all teachers who have not already been trained in the use of this system volunteered to a end the workshop. The General Studies teachers were joined by their colleagues in the Special Services department for Part 1 of this training. Teachers enthusias cally embraced the value of using this type of assessment in the classroom and are eager to con nue their training a er the winter break. Wishing you all an enjoyable vaca on. Dear Parents, When Yaakov Avinu was giving brachos to his children at the end of his life, he gave a specific bracha to Yissachar related to learning Torah. Yissachar was compared to a donkey loaded with wares prepared to shoulder the effort necessary to grow in Torah. In depic ng the analogy, the Torah describes the donkey that rests between the borders of the towns along the way. He takes the opportunity to rest and appreciate what he has done. Then upon awakening, he lowers his shoulders, ready to carry the load further. The Chofetz Chaim explains that this refers to a talmid who toils in learning and accomplishes a lot. When he completes a mesacheta or parsha, he takes a bit of

me to celebrate his accomplishment with a siyum and a short break to rest up. That rest then serves as a catalyst to invigorate his spirits and mo vate him onward and upward.

As we head into our mid winter break, I find this analogy quite appropriate. We have spent months working hard, learning perakim, parshios, mesachetas and sugyos and striving to make progress and succeed in our growth. Vaca on is the me to reflect on our accomplishments, reenergize and renew our drive to build on the success achieved so far. Our Hasmadah program is a perfect vehicle for this. We hope all our students will take the opportunity to put in the me required for the program and we look for‐ward to all the boys joining us on our exci ng Hasmadah trips that are highlights of our year. Wishing you all a wonderful week to reen‐ergize and we look forward to a renewed and refreshed start to the rest of the school year. Rabbi Binyomin Perlstein, Assoc. Menahel

A Peek                    Into Our Week:

ECD HIGHLIGHTS OUR FUN IN THE SNOW!

Hip hip hooray...we had another snowy day! Morah Sara’s nursery class had a wonderful me pain ng the snow. The

weather was perfect for playing outdoors and there was just enough snow to paint. We loved watching the snow transform into so many beau ful colors with our paint brushes. The fun did not stop there because the next day, we had a great me coloring the sidewalk with chalk a er the snow had melted. We let our crea vity flow as we drew pictures and figures all

around the playground sidewalk.

Ms. Benaroya's Fourth Grade Class: The boys of 4B have been entrenched in a project‐based learning project for science. Their solar system planets research reports incorporated many vital read‐ing and wri ng skills and the process for this has been intense. First, we researched informa on about each planet, such as size and distance. Once they gathered that informa on on a graphic organizer, they wrote a rough copy paragraph for each planet. It was then edited, proofread, and we typed it up, inser ng images and symbols for each planet. The reports are being color printed and are quite impressive to see! We took a trip to the Buehler Challenger and Science Center where the boys engaged in scien fic experiments that simulate real experiments that astronauts conduct in space. It was a BLAST!

Rabbi Finkel’s Kitah Hey: We have been accomplishing so much in 5B‐F. In Gema‐ra, we are finishing our first sugya ‐ Yiush Shelo Midaas. We were all wai ng in an cipa on as the Gemara led us thru the en re Shakla V'tarya (give and take) to see if the halacha is like Abaye or Rava. In Chumash, we are very involved in learning about the structure and all the keilim of the mishkan. Rebbe explained to us that when we learn about the mishkan, we actually bring the kedusha of the mishkan onto ourselves and to the en re world. We are all becoming dikduk experts as we finish the unit on verbs and start the unit on conju‐ga ons of nouns in their possessive form. In Navi, we finished learning the tragic story how Shaul hamelech lost his kingship because of his failure to destroy Amalek and we are star ng to learn about the new era of Malchus Beis Dovid. We are all looking forward to our Haschalas Gemara trip to Lakewood, where we will meet with the BMG Rosh Hayeshiva, tour the Yeshiva, and experience many other exci ng and inspiring ac vi es.

Mrs. Ebstein’s Second Grade Class: In Science, the boys are learning about humans as part of our study of living things. We were very excited to have Yoni Rabinovitz's grandfather, Dr. Stroh, a cardiologist, come visit our class. He showed us a model of the heart and explained its func on and importance. Then each boy got to hear a classmate's heartbeat using a stethoscope. It was a wonderful learning experience for the boys. In Language Arts, the boys are finishing up their final dra s of their own fairy tales and decora ng covers for their stories. We are looking forward to publishing our book of collec ve fairy tales for each boy to bring home.
