MESSIAH WILL OBSERVE

CHILDREN’S SABBATH ON OCTOBER 19

Messiah will join thousands of churches, syna-gogues, mosques, temples and other faith commu-nities across the country in an observation of National Children’s Sabbath, engaging people of faith in improving the lives of children and their fami-lies by celebrating National Children’s Sabbath. The focus of this year’s observance is “Precious in God’s Sight: Answering the Call to Cherish and Protect Every Child,” focusing on how we can ensure every child a strong start in life by investing in early child-hood development. Father Randy will be preaching this day.

Sponsored by the Children’s Defense Fund, the Na-tional Observance of Children’s Sabbaths celebra-tion is a way for faith communities to celebrate chil-dren as sacred gifts of the Divine, and provides the opportunity for houses of worship to renew and live out their moral responsibility to care, protect and ad-vocate for all children.

This celebration is part of a broader children’s movement that aims to unite communities and reli-gious congregations of all faiths across this nation in share concern for children and a common commit-ment to improving their lives and working for justice on their behalf. In that respect, each action is big-ger, more powerful and more inspiring than the efforts of any one celebration.

MEET OUR NEW INTERN Hello! I’m Sydney! Just a few things about me, I am 17 and a senior at Burlington High School. At school I am involved in football and basketball cheerleading, national honors society, leo club, and two choirs!

I am a member at Bethany Lutheran Church. I help out at VBS every year, I help out at Sunday school, I have attended the past two synod assemblies, and I am the youth representative on our church council.

This year I am doing an internship through school and I chose to do it at church. I’m splitting my time with Bethany and Messiah. Like most high school-ers, I have no idea what I want to do with my life, but being a youth director is the only thing that I have actually thought about. I chose to do my internship with Kelly and Amanda, to learn what the job is actu-ally about and get the “behind the scenes” of what goes into planning everything like trips, confirmation, VBS, and anything else they have to offer me! I am so excited to be helping Kelly and Amanda out this year and to grow in my faith with them. Sydney

Messiah Preschool News Greetings from the Children’s Wing of the church. By

the time you open this newsletter school will have begun and you can once again hear the little voices bubbling with excitement throughout the halls. Refreshed and renewed for another year seems to be our motto. The playground looks refreshed and inviting again. It is safe once again for all the little ones that come to play here.

An entire semi load or 80 cubic yards of mulch was delivered on Wednesday, August 13. We only had a small crew of two that had volunteered to disperse the huge pile. Then an “angel” called and offered his equipment and a couple workers to do the overwhelming task for us. On Thursday the job was complet-ed in just about three hours. Our playground had been covered with mulch and the toys were anchored down for another year of adventurous play. A great big thank you to Ned Adams and his crew!!! The preschool rooms have been refreshed, waxed and put back together all shiny and waiting for the chil-dren’s inside learning. We already have a small praying mantis in our aquarium waiting for hopefully many other “insects” to join her. Thus the cycle of life begins again for the preschool year! Our teachers are well refreshed and anticipating a great year filled with fun and the joy of learning the children do “HANDS ON!”!

We have openings for children still in our 4-year-old morning and afternoon sessions. The combination 3/4-year-old (older3’s, younger 4’s) morning class that meets on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The 4-year-old PM meets on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fri-day afternoons. The 3’s class is now full and meets on Tuesday/Thursday mornings. This is a good time to be thinking about making that contribution to our scholarship program or providing tuition for a child that needs help with being able to attend preschool. Yes, we do have some children here at Messiah that could use some of your help in being able to attend preschool, as well as others from our community. If you have questions, please call Ms. Margie (our Director) at 754-7591 ext. 2. If I am not available, leave a message with your phone number and I will get back to you. Remember, too, that we collect Campbells’ products labels. You can leave them in the office and we will be glad to pick them up. If you other have items to donate to the preschool room, please call the number above.

Thank you. Ms. Margie

Glimmerings of grace… Yesterday, while I was preparing for the Men in Mission activity at the Burlington High School Homecoming parade I noticed the maple tree in the neighbor of Messiah’s yard. It is beginning to wear the most beautiful color of crimson and gold that comes in this part of the world to maple trees during autumn. I was reminded of a line in Geoffrey Studdert-Kennedy’s hymn “...the royal robes of autumn moors...” Once again the earth is come to au-tumn in this part of our world, and I reminded of the cyclic nature of life, caused by the larger cycles of the moon as it revolves around the earth and the earth, turning on its axis, circles around the sun. Autumn will be followed by winter and then spring will return again. The monarch butterflies and hummingbirds have ventured south so that they can re-turn in the spring. The life of the church follows the same kind of cycle. The readings will begin to point to the end times as the church’s year approaches the Festival of Christ the King on November 23, in which the cycle begins again on the First Sunday of Advent (the church’s New Year) with a reading about Christ’s return at the end of time. And in the while cycle there is not a place where God is not. Our lives are cyclic too, and there is not a place in that great cycle where God is not. We are reminded in a poem by Susan Palo Cherwien that the cycle is about “home;” she writes Fear not. We are never alone. We process From home

Through home

To home. There is no place

Where God is not. Be watchful, dear friends, as make this journey together for signs of spring even as the leaves turn to red and gold. Randy+

Messiah Faith stories:

“God works in mysterious ways”. We’ve heard these words most of our lives, know it’s true, but sometimes need to put a story to it.

Two days before we had six groups come to package our miracle food for Kids Against Hunger, I wrote a note to my niece, Dione, in Thailand. She returned a note with two articles about Walter Gwenigale, Jr. and his trip to Liberia in hopes of finding some way to help those stricken with Ebola.

Just so you know how this began—Walter Gwenigale, Jr., now working for the VA in Des Moines, is the son of Dr. Gwenigale who is the Minister of Health in Liberia and formerly Director of Phebe Hospital, where Carolyn worked. Walter, his mom and brother and sister left Liberia when the war broke out in 1989, and went to Puerto Rico—his mother’s homeland—to finish school. Walter, being the oldest and in high school, was concerned about trying to finish high school in a Spanish -speaking country, so he came to live with our family while finishing high school. This is how Walter, Jr., a Liberian, ended up in Des Moines, Iowa.

The article Dione sent me told about how Walter was spearheading a huge food shipment to the Ebola patients in Liberia. As I read it a name popped up, Floyd Hammer, who I knew was a worker with KAH and a good friend of Don Fields, our Iowa Director of Kids Against Hunger. Even though the groups in Des Moines had a little different name, I was almost certain it was the same food we were packag-ing at Messiah. I even saw a picture in the article of the boxes ready to be shipped with silhouettes of children holding hands. I knew that some of our new aprons have that same symbol.

I quickly sent the email to Don Fields who immediately called his friend Floyd Hammer in Florida. Don asked Floyd if we would be able to send the 22,000 meals that had been packaged at Messiah in August and September. Floyd was excited and happy to hear of our gift and responded that we could indeed send them along with the 700,000 meals being sent out of Des Moines to help strengthen the immune systems of those suffering from Ebola.

So, within a half an hour from my sending the email articles to Don Fields, he called to tell me the good news of our meals being sent to Liberia. This exciting chain of events proves “God works in mysterious ways”.

The 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa is the largest and longest-lasting Ebola outbreak in recorded history. To further understand the scale of this disease, the Ebola outbreak is actually the first Ebola epidemic the world has experienced, as the virus has spread to multiple countries, including Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. More than 2,400 people have died from Ebola during this epidemic.

The spread of Ebola presents several more complications than just battling and containing the virus itself. People in infected areas have been quarantined to their homes as towns shut down to try to limit the disease from spreading further. As a result, people are not able to work, harvest fields or purchase food. Other countries that ship food to the region are afraid to dock their ships to deliver food for fear of contracting the virus. The lack of food has been a growing concern as people are now dealing with food security issues that have been exacerbat-ed by the spread of Ebola.

"We need food," says the Rev. D. Jensen Seyenkulo, Bishop of the Lutheran Church in Liberia. "Our workers from all across the country are being asked to take off work during the crisis. The quarantined communities and stranded travelers are crying for food and water. The treatment centers need food. There is a saying around now that goes like this: 'If we do not die of Ebola, we will die of starvation.'"

In August, Lutheran Disaster Response committed $10,000 to assist Global Health Ministries in the shipment of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Liberia. Lutheran Disaster Response is now committing $90,000 to as-sist with food distributions in Liberia and Sierra Leone and with Ebola sensitization and prevention in Liberia, the country that currently has experienced the highest number of Ebola cases.

Food Distributions in Liberia and Sierra Leone

We will work with our companion church, the Lutheran Church in Liberia, to activate food distributions in six tar-geted areas of Liberia that will assist 999 households with a month's supply of oil, rice and fish.

In Sierra Leone, we will work with our companion church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Sierra Leone, to provide food assistance also consisting of oil, rice and fish to 3,000 individuals.

"With no way to buy food, the church has to help," says the Rev. Thomas Barnett, Bishop of the Evangelical Lu-theran Church of Sierra Leone.

Ebola Sensitization and Prevention in Liberia

Liberia has seen the highest number of Ebola cases since the outbreak reached the country in March. Since the disease presents a 90 percent fatality rate, raising awareness about symptoms and prevention is vital. With our partner, ACT Alliance, we will work with Lutheran Development Services and the Lutheran Church in Liberia to provide Ebola sensitization and prevention training to 4,500 individuals in Lofa and Bong counties.

In addition to the training program, we will work with our companions and partners to construct an isolation unit at Phebe Hospital and School of Nursing. This unit will provide significant contributions toward the containment of the disease and the ability to provide life-saving care.

Please join us as we continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Libe-ria, Sierra Leone and the rest of the West Africa region who are daily bat-tling with the risks of Ebola and the many impacts that come with it.

If you would like to support Lutheran Disaster Response's work in the fight against Ebola, please visit the Lutheran Disaster Response – Ebola Out-break giving page.

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10

Mission Statement

Welcoming all people to share in God’s blessings by strengthening our commitment to God through prayer, fellowship and service.

Page 10: Messiah Lutheran Church Messiah Messengerjwwmedia.s3.amazonaws.com/messiah-burlington/pdf/n2014...MESSIAH CHURCH WOMEN invite all the women of Messiah to join a circle for Bible study

We think we can!

During our October Pledge Month, we recall a child’s story written in the early twentieth

century. Watty Piper penned one version entitled, The Little Engine that Could, in 1930. The

Little Blue Engine teaches us the values of optimism and hard work.

As we, Messiah Lutheran Church, consider our stewardship over the next month, you will be

asked to think about your optimism with Jesus. We believe that everything we have is a trust

from God, given to us to care for and manage. With Jesus by our side, of course, we can!

We will be honored with temple talks during our Pledge Month: Joel Hanger on October 5th,

Ministry Fair on October 12th, John Larson on October 19th and on Pledge Sunday, October

26th, Char Blodgett. Bulletin inserts will follow our Little Blue Engine up the hill to success!

On Pledge Sunday, October 26th, each member of Messiah will have the opportunity to

complete an estimate of giving card and a time and talent sheet. (Included in the newsletter

now) On this card and sheet, each of us will indicate our plan for giving for the coming year.

This will not only be a plan for giving to Messiah Lutheran Church, it will also be a plan for how

we will succeed at delivering our gifts to the ministry of the Church. We think we can! We think we can! We did!
