Pretty good deals, considering theprice of a peak-of-the-peak round-trip fare, huh? But theres a catch many of the items require bulk pur-chases. You need to buy 150 water

bottles, 50 banks and six of those watches, which may seem a tadexcessive to anyone just looking toshow off their Metro pride. (Luckily,

you can buy just one of what seemsto be the most useful item on thesite: a $6.95 stress reliever in theshape of a Metro train.)

Metro says this is just a softlaunch and its still working out thekinks, which is why it wont com-ment on the odd assortment of avail-able items. So Im hoping theyre

etro officials are making angressive push to repair the transitstems rails and stations, and thisekend four stations will be closedrough Memorial Day so crewsn work around the clock. The shutdowns are an extreme

etro has used with more fre-ency to catch up on a backlogrepairs and maintenance acrosse aging rail network, much of hich turned 35 this year. Metros launched a $5 billion capitalprovement effort, but the effort

aves riders with late-night delaysd longer weekend waits. The system wasnt main-

ned the way it should be, and have to make up for that now,id Richard Sarles, Metros gen-al manager and chief executive.hats why were doing this inten-

ve work.Plans call for replacing venti-

ion and exhaust fans; repair-g platforms; redoing elevators, calators and tiles at stations; andpairing signals, transformers anduipment along tracks.Unlike other systems which

ve multiple tracks and can oftenolate their work without majorutdowns the Metro system hasly two tracks, so it often has to do

ngle-tracking to complete work,d, at times, close stations.Crews work three-day weekends

cause it allows them more time tong in heavy equipment for com-cated repairs, officials said.

r riders, the weekend work haseant more headaches.

    Michelle McHugh, 44, of Hous-

ton, abandoned her plans last week-end to take Metro to National Air-port for a flight home. Instead, shecaught the Red Line from Grosve-nor-Strathmore to Woodley Park,

where she was meeting friends. Sheplanned to take a cab to the airportafterward. Im worried about the

train delays, she said.Nearby at the Grosvenor sta-tion platform, Caroline Rushby of Gaithersburg and a friend wait-ed last Saturday for a downtown-

bound train.Metro used to be the best thing

to have, especially on weekends, because you didnt have to spendso much on gas, Rushby said. But now weekends are becom-ing the worst.

In the D.C. area, the weekend shut-downs will continue beyond Memo-rial Day, Metro officials warned.

Work is planned for the first week-end of June and over the Labor Day holiday weekend. On the Satur-day and Sunday of the Fourth of

July weekend, there will be work occurring outside the downtowncore that will require some sin-gle-tracking.

And, Sarles said, the capital work is going to go on for years.(THE WASHINGTON POST)

Not GoingAnywhereLonger Metro wait times on holidaysre a reality to start getting used to

This weekend, more than 1,100 Metro em-ployees and contractors are scheduled towork on repairs and maintenance. Metro isshutting down four stations on the OrangeLine, including the one closest to RFK Sta-dium, which is the site of a four-day motorcy-cle festival. The closure of the Capitol South,Eastern Market, Potomac Avenue and Stadi-um-Armory stations will also impede accessto restaurants, hotels, monuments and Me-morial Day weekend events. However, Metrois offering free shuttle buses for riders to getaround the closed stations. (TWP)

Metro is not alone in trying to findthe time to squeeze in its repair work.

In San Francisco, the Bay Area RapidTransit agency (BART) has at least$20 billion worth of capital improvementprojects under way to improve its nearly40-year-old system. BART does do eveningand weekend shutdowns on some lines. Over

Memorial Day, BART plans to shut down onetrack connecting Oakland to San Francisco forelectrical work. Riders will likely have to wait anadditional 20 to 40 minutes for trains, officialssaid.

New York Citys subway faces challenges inmaintaining its 100-year-old system because it isopen 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Thesystem is in the second year of a $23.8 billion,five-year capital improvement plan. Over MemorialDay weekend, 17 of its 26 lines will be affected by work. (

The number of track switchesMetro has replaced in the last yearin line with orders from the NTSB toimprove safety. Metro has promiseda total of 178 will have been replacedby the time the work is done. (TWP)
