  • New generation single tires

About three weeks ago I stood in front of an audience of business professionals in Chicago. I challenged the people in the room to recognize what the bottle of water had in common with the note pads and clip boards. What the table, chairs, carpets and light fixtures all had in common. Those of us associated with the trucking industry recognize the riddle: every good has spent some time in the back of a truck. I went on to describe how trucking is the circulatory system, the lifeblood of the North American economy.

We are here today because we have a responsibility to the trucking industry, to our people, and to our families to ensure that the decisions we make support our world, our industry, our health, and our safety.

Five years ago Michelin introduced the Michelin X One new generation single tire.Five years ago Michelin learned that inch/width wasnt enough in Canada.Five years ago Michelin began to approach Canadian DOTs to understand the regulations and to work to change those regulations.Five years ago Michelin was alone.Today there are three tire manufacturers with new generation single tiresToday there are hundreds of US fleets and over twenty Canadian fleets running new generation single tires.Today the trucking industry through their associations and individually have made it clear they want full, unfettered access to the new generation single tires because of the huge benefits new generation singles deliver to truck operators, drivers, and the global environment.

I am here to speak on behalf of Michelin (a responsible corporate citizen), I am here as a father (sometimes irresponsible) and I am here as a Canadian a responsible society. The X One has a conventional belt structure AND a unique zero degree belt called the infini-coil.The Infini-coil allows the tire to maintain a flat footprint and avoid the natural growth that would occurat highway speeds with such a wide tire.

When we break down the fuel consumption of a truck, you can see that approximately one third of the fuel consumed is directly attributable to the rolling resistance of the tires. For evry 3% in rolling resistance reduction, we acheive a 1% improvement in fuel consumption. The X One reduces rolling restance by over 12%.The X One reduces fuel consumption by over 4%.A truck that eats 6.5 mpg on duals will be at 6.76 mpg or better with X One singles. At 120,000 miles/year, you save 710 gallons per vehicle per year.800 plus pounds of additional payload! Can that be used for anything?Plug in your numbers with the weight savings calculator and see what the X One can convert from tare weight to payload. You can expect to save around 76lbs per duals in tire weight (152lbs/axle).The aluminum to aluminum wheels save around 30lbs per dual wheels (60lbs/axle).When moving from steel to aluminum the wheel weights become much more dramatic. There is clear evidence that many tire failures are attributable to poor tire maintenanceIn fact air pressure maintenance can be the single most important element in a tire maintenance programImproved tire wearImproved fuel efficiencyImproved vehicle handling and responseReduced vehicle downtime due to flatsThe X One requires one valve instead of two for easier pressure checksThere is no awkward inside dual to checkThere is no deflated inside dual hiding behind a healthy outside dualVehicle stability is a function of load height and vehicle track. The X One can improve (widen) track width and if used at the design level at OE can be used to lower load height.

Track width is measured from the center of left contact area to the center of the right contact area. For a dual tire this point is the centre of the dual space. When X Ones are mounted to have the same outside shoulder to outside shoulder distance, the centre of the X One contact area moves outward by several inches, significantly improving (widening) vehicle track and thereby improving vehicle stability. When zero offset wheels are used, track is marginally wider. Two inch offset wheels are recommended for all drive axles. For tapered spindle (N spindle) trailer axles (where the outer bearing is smaller than the inner bearing) often a zero offset wheel is recommended.A second element to note is the increase in the inner opening (the space between the inside shoulders of the tires on an axle)

If through the installation of X Ones at the OE level, we create wider freespace between the tires, OEMs can widen the rails and lower the tanks on bulk trailers.Every good has spent time in the back of a truck. Fuel prices have gone through the roof. Insurance prices have gone through the roof. Weight tolerances are disappearing. 2003 engines use more fuel. 2007 engines will be less efficient again. We have to find a way to stop putting the load on trucking fleets. In fact we have. New generation single tires deliver improved fuel economy, reduced vehicle tare weights, improved vehicle stability, improved driver comfort, improved pressure maintenance, improved resistance to aquaplaning, increased public safety, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and a slightly reduced pavement impact. All that for the same price as dualsone tire for the price of two. I know the benefits are huge the Genivar study concluded over $120M for Qubec. In theory that would translate to about $500 million for Canadians.

I urge you to look at the facts. I urge you to recognize the value of single tires to the trucking industry and society. I urge you set regulations that allow new generation single tires to carry the same loads st duals. Equality. Its fair, its right, and it is in your hands.

    Thank you for your attention.
