Big idea (s)What is/are your big ideas? 1.Creative Thinking: creativity is a PROCESS that incorporates both divergent and convergent

thinking tasks in order to problem-solve.2. Aesthetic awareness

What are your content points for this lesson?

1. Creativity is not reserved for individuals deemed to have ‘innate’ abilities’, rather it is a process that can be learnt/developed.

2. Through exploring and combing sound/s students can generate meaning from varying viewpoints, developing knowledge of self and the world around them.

3. Aesthetic understanding. What are you doing with it: intended learning outcomes/objectives

1. Evaluate meaning, ideas, experiences, values (both their own and others) and express them through sound exploration and the compositional process, recording the product through graphic notation.

2. Develop an awareness/deeper understanding of ‘creative thinking’3. Manipulate sound to capture emotion and enhance perception of experiences.

Generating engagementAffective engagement:

Can you generate this? How?

Placing the students’ ideas/values/experiences/explorations at the centre of the learning while engaging in collective knowledge construction creates a shared intellectual control.

Students are offered a variety of musical media to utilise. There is no “wrong” answer to the tasks, which creates a relaxed environment and

encourages an Internal locus of control. Clearly defined tasks that have a myriad of possible outcomes. Tasks can be completed with varying degrees of sophistication.

What student background do you expect? How will you find out and use this?

Students would have been exposed to at least one aspect of the music making process, either actively or passively. As such, I attend to draw upon students’ tacit knowledge to complete tasks and develop understanding of key concepts. Students do not need any prior music instrumental experience or proficiency.

So how will you begin? Scaffolding questions such as- what do you think creativity is? Can it be learnt? Are some people more creative than others, and Why? How can engaging in music making enhance your understanding of yourself and the world around you?

Discuss content points to provide a focus for thinking. (Introduce Webers Model for Creative Thinking)

Introduce task/s.Cognitive What will be your tasks Students will be broken into small groups and assigned a visual stimulus. Groups then have to

Page 2: Micro Teach Lesson Plan Elaborated4-1

engagement and why discuss how this stimulus could best be encapsulated through sound. The task is to compose a short piece of music using a variety of sound sources (electronic, melodic instruments, percussion, voice), which captures the mood, meaning or ideas expressed within their visual stimulus. Groups have to record their end product using graphic notation. A collective discussion takes place, where each group presents their compositions and the reasoning behind their musical choices, and their graphic notation. These activities challenge pre-existing ideas/beliefs about creativity and allow students own explorations/experiences/values/ideas to form the nexus of learning.

What do you intend students will be doing

Participating within group discussion, critical /reflective thinking. Engaging in a range of cognitive strategies i.e. divergent thinking, convergent thinking,

self-reflection Exploring various musical media and thoughtfully combing sound.

Behavioural engagement: -what will be your instructions?

Everyone must contribute to discussions, the composition and graphic notation.

During the lesson: Feedback/communication/ongoing evaluationWhat will you be attending to as signs of success

Engagement in discussion as well as task/s Be able to draw upon individual and collective ideas, beliefs, values and experiences to

complete composition/graphic notation task. Be able to give reasons/justifications for their musical choices and defend them if

necessary. Articulate the processes behind ‘creative thinking’.

How will you know/find out if you are achieving your goals?

What teaching moves will you make to sustain engagement?

Can include new questions, developing your big idea, enriching understandings, extending the task

Debrief How will you draw the lesson together -generating student reflection on what they have done?Post Lesson Evaluation

Were there unexpected successes This may lead to ideas you will incorporate next timeWhat could be improved? How well were your goals achieved? Would you amend the opening? Tasks? instruction? What did

you learn about your teaching that you can work on for next time?
