Black History Month

African American Wax Museum In honor of Black History Month, students at Eagle’s Landing Middle School will present an African American Wax Museum. The Wax Museum will take place on Tuesday February 28 (Time TBA). Each student will select a famous African American to portray. They will have two weeks to complete a research project. The project will consist of researching and documenting facts, making a poster, and writing and performing a short speech. Students are not expected to do all the research at home. Class time will be allotted to work on the project. On, February 9th all students need to have selected a person to portray in the wax museum. This aligns with the new Common Core Standards: Writing Standards

ELACC6-8WHST2: Write informative/explanatory texts, including the narration of historical events, scientific procedures/ experiments, or technical processes.

a. Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information into broader categories as appropriate to achieving purpose; includeformatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.

Black History Wax Museum Details

Biography Research Paper:The students are to choose an African American historical or modern day figure they are interested in researching. Students can check out books in the library, if they have one on their figure. They may also use books from home or the public library.

For the paper the students will do research outside of class. Research paper and speech are due by February 27, 2017. They will also need a minimum of three sources. These can be books, magazines, articles, or internet sources. Please do not use Wikipedia.

The paper will be written in the five-paragraph essay format; one introductory, three body, and one concluding paragraph.

Student’s research paper and speech must be in their own words.

For the bibliography students are required to have a minimum of three sources. Books: name of book, and author Magazines or articles: name, author and date Internet: exact website (www.

Speech: To be believable as a “wax statue come to life” the students’ are required to write and memorize a speech. The speech will come directly from the students completed report; no additional research will be required.

They are to apply the information they learned about their historically significant figure to a 1st person perspective, 1 to 2 minute, speech that will be given for the actual Black History Wax Museum, on February 28th. Students can have 1 small note card. Note card may have notes on front and back to help student with their speech.

The students will be graded on their costume on February 28th. We will encourage the students to be creative and use what they have. This isn’t something they must make or buy something special for, although they can if they choose. We will be giving the grade based upon effort, not authenticity. Props are required. NO WEAPONS
