STUDYING IN OMANThe Sultanate of Oman features many extraordinarily varied tourist-attracting elements. Thanks to its distinct location playing as a gateway between the East and the West.

The Omanis had always excelled in riding the sea, and that what has made its history and civilization as ancient as its early contacts with other civilizations. This great record of history is apparent in its archaeological sites and the biographies of the makers of that history.

Other than that, there is a great deal of biodiversity with plains, coasts and mountains. This diversity in climate gives its winter a special summer sun-warmth across the country’s deserts and cities, fresh humidity-free breeze with moderate temperature in Jabal Akhdar, and seasonal wind, showers, rain, clouds, refreshing breeze in fall season In Dofar.

The Omani people are friendly and hospitable. Although Arabic is their main language. English is spoken widely. Despite their affable nature, the Omanis are quite conservative. They value their privacy and in particular, hold

their religion in highest regard expecting due respect for their faith. Modesty is the keyword with regards to clothing. Omani women wear long garments called Abayat, ensuring that they are covered from head to toe and they wear scarves called Lahaf to cover their heads. The men wear long ankle length robes called ‘Dishdasha’ and handmade decorated caps called ‘Qum-ma’. On formal occasions they wear a turban called ‘Mussar’.

During the holy month of Ramadan, all Muslims fast during the hours of daylight. Visitors to the country should remember that eating, drinking and smoking in public are not allowed at this time.

TEACHING AND LEARNING AT MECThe teaching and learning systems at Middle East College and all academic departments are designed to produce employable graduates who are not only knowledgeable in their own field of study, but are also forward thinking, creative, and responsible members of society. In its quest to achieve its objective, the College has developed a set of generic graduate attributes that are embedded in programme and module learning outcomes. Attainment of these outcomes would imply internalisation of these attributes. A wide spectrum of teaching methodologies are applied, including lectures, practical work, group discussions, and research based teaching. Both teacher-led and student-centred learning are given equal consideration, with the emphasis moving from generic content and skill development at the certificate and diploma levels, to problem solving and critical thinking at the undergraduate level. In addition to subject specific skills acquired in the technology and engineering programmes, students are also given an opportunity to develop soft skills that will enhance employability. Technology resources are utilised to

support learning in purpose built laboratories. Classrooms are also equipped to facilitate the use of technology in teaching. Additional learning support is provided by the Student Success Centre through strategies such as extra tutorials, training sessions to enhance life skills, and counseling services. Various staff development initiatives are organised and coordinated by the Centre for Academic Practices to ensure that the quality of teaching remains at a consistently high level. There are reciprocal visits to the partner University each semester and currently, a number of Middle East College staff are undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education Professional Practice delivered by Coventry University faculty. In addition, there are regular training sessions conducted by peers and external experts. Teaching quality is also assured through the moderation process. There is internal as well as external moderation of assessments to ensure that these are in compliance with set standards, and of an appropriate level. Middle East College's aim is to harness creative abilities through innovative teaching and learning practices. This is to be achieved through enhanced student experience.

MEC HOUSESThe concept of ‘Houses’ has been introduced in MEC since FALL 2013. There are eight houses, namely: Almas, Aqeeq, Fairoz, Kahraman, Lulu, Marjan, Yaqoot and Zumrud, which are Arabic names for various gemstones. The ‘House’ system aims to bring students and staff together socially, to work and compete alongside in sports, photography, dramatics, arts and literary activities. It provides a platform for the community to project their talent, and work together as a team. Inter House competitions are announced during the academic year. Students and staff members are encouraged to participate and contribute toward their respective Houses. All MEC members, including students and staff are enrolled in the system randomly through the Student Information System. House activities are governed by the Student Experience Unit in coordination with MEC Student Council and other supporting personnel. • Almas: This is one of the hardest gemstones and also one of the most valuable ones. Known as diamond in English, it is considered as the ‘Symbol of Innocence’. The official colour of Almas house is Yellow.

• Lulu: This is the oldest known gem, to man. The ‘Pearl’ unlike all gems is derived from a living creature. The Pearl is considered a “Symbol of Purity”. The official colour of Lulu house is Purple.• Aqeeq: The Garnet, as a stone, has many colours. This stone is considered a “Symbol of Success”. The official colour of Aqeeq house is Red.

•Fairoz: This is a rare and valuable stone. In ancient times it was considered to be the “Symbol of Protection”. The official colour of Fairoz house is Black.

• Yaqoot: Better known as Sapphire, means Blue in Greek and thereby the House takes the same colour. This stone is also considered “The Stone of Destiny” .

• Kahraman:The amber is actually not a stone but derived from tree fossils. The official colour of Kahraman house is Orange.

• Marjan: Commonly known as Coral, it has been called the 'Garden of the Sea'. It contains living animals. The colour of this most sought after gem is White.
