AssistingCommunityCollegesand/orJointTechnicalEducationDistrictsdevelopMiddleSkillsInternshipProgramsfortheirstudents.
IntroductionScienceFoundationArizona(SFAz)ispleasedtoreleasethisRequestforProposals(RFP)withthegeneroussupportoftheJPMorganChaseFoundation.TheRFPisdesignedtoassistinstitutionsCommunityColleges(CC)andJointTechnicalEducationalDistricts(JTED),developand/orexpandhighqualitysustainableinternshipprogramsforstudentsinmanufacturing,engineering,energy,informationtechnologyandhealthcarecertificationordegreeprograms.Theseinternshipprogramsareseenasimportantopportunitiesforenhancedstudentlearningandforinstitutionstoconnectandestablishstrongertieswiththeirlocalemployerbaseofbusinessesandindustries.SFAzisa501(c)(3)non-profitorganizationinitiatedin2006bytheGreaterPhoenixLeadershipInc.,SouthernArizonaLeadershipCouncilandtheFlagstaffFortyinconjunctionwiththeexecutiveandlegislativebranchesofstategovernment.SFAzservesasacatalystforknowledge-basedjobsandeconomicdiversitythroughoversightofresearch,developmentandeducationgrantstoeducationandothernon-profitresearchperforminginstitutions.Formoreinformation,visitwww.sfaz.org.ObjectiveTheobjectiveoftheseawardsofupto$20,000istoprovide(a)seedfundingtotheselectedinstitutionstohelpbuildthenecessaryconnectionswithlocalbusinessandindustrypartners,(b)supporttostudentswithmodeststipendsduringtheirinternshipperiodand(c)businessesandindustrypartnersriskfreeopportunitiestobecomingacquaintedwithboththeeducationalinstitutionandthecalibreofstudentscomingthroughtheirprograms.Thegoalforeachawardeeistobuildasuccessfulinternshipprogramwheretheirbusinessandindustrypartnersrecognizethevaluepropositionofcontinuingtosustaintheirlocalprogramoncethegrantperiodhasended.ToolsavailabletoinstitutionsastheyplanandbuildtheirproposalsandprogramsincludeScienceFoundationArizona’sSTEMPathwaysGuide(http://www.sfaz.org/stem-

pathways/andthePimaCountyOneStop’sInternships101,ABusinessFriendlyToolkit(http://leadlocal.global/internships101/developedinpartnershipwithLeadLocal.SFAzencouragesCCsandJTEDstosubmitproposalswithcreativeandinnovativeideas.Ifcollaborationbetweeninstitutionswouldstrengthenaproposedprogramthenitisstronglyencouraged.Itisstronglyrecommendedthatbusinessand/orindustrypartnersbeincludedinbuildingtheproposalandthattheirlettersofintenttohostinternsareincludedwitheachproposalsubmission.AwardFundingperawardisupto$20,000tobuildanewandsustainableinternshipprogramortoenhanceacurrentprogram.ThefundingcanbeusedprimarilyinsupportofanIndustryCoordinatorandstipendsforstudentsduringtheirinternshipswithlocalcompanies.Thefundingperiodis9monthsfromJanuary9,2017toOctober8,2017.ProgressreportsarerequiredeachquarterandfinalnarrativeandexpenditurereportsareduebyOctober30th,2017,22daysaftercompletionofthefundingperiod.Thefinalreportmustdescribetheprogressmadeagainsttheproposedprojectgoals,programoutcomes,planstosustaintheprogram,andincludeanaccountingofalltheexpensesincurred.ProposalsaredueNoon(MST),Monday,December5th,2016.ThePrincipalInvestigator(PI)willbenotifiedoftheresultsbyJanuary9th,2017.SFAzanticipatesmakinguptofive(5)awards.RequiredElementsofeachProgram
• Programsdesignedinsupportofstudentsstudyingfordegreesorcertificationsinthemiddleskillsgrowthsectorsofmanufacturing,engineering,energy,informationtechnologyand/orhealthcare.
• Institutionsandthepartneringbusinessorindustrygroupsprovidecohortsofstudentstheopportunitytointernforpre-determinedandsignificantperiodsoveratleastonesemester.
• Eachprogramisexpectedtohavereachedapointinitsdevelopmentwherethereisahighprobabilitythatpartneringcompaniesassumethecostsofsupportingthestudentswhiletheyinternandeachinstitutionhascommittedtotheon-goingsupportandgrowthoftheirprograms.
• Planstovalidateeachnewprogrambygatheringandanalyzingsupportingdataandmetrics,trackingandmeasureprogressshouldbeincluded.
• HostingprogramprogressreviewswithSFAzprogramofficer/evaluatorandindustrypartnersisrequired.
