Iwant to be among the first to congratulate The Class of 2021 on completing your high school career!

The last mile of your academic journey required significant – at times painful — adjustment due to the challenge imposed by the global pandemic. I’m proud of how well you met this hurdle, but not surprised. The Class of 2021 has shown itself to be strong, patient, spirited – and possessing an appetite for challenge that will be a priceless asset in the years to come.

You made important sacrifices to keep yourselves, your families, and our community safe, and were pioneers in the educational movement that reimagined classes, assignments, and celebrations in virtual and hybrid settings.

Mark Twain once said that the secret to getting ahead is getting started. Your last four years at Middletown High have given you a strong foundation – with academic preparation, the opportunity to explore career pathways, and experience in being service-minded leaders and citizens of the world.

Though these may be uncertain times, I feel confident about our future simply by knowing that you, our graduates, will be part of it.

As you prepare to walk across the stage, remember that finishing your high school career does not mean you leave our family. Just the opposite! You are now joining thousands of successful alumni who have gone on to raise the standard of excellence, and shape the future, of our community, state and nation.

TO THE CLASS OF 2021

Richard Forsten, Esq.Board President

You have experienced a Senior Year unlike any other, and certainly one you never expected. But perhaps you have learned a lesson greater than all the graduating classes before you: resilience.

“Resilience” is often defined as the ability to recover quickly, to bounce back, and to deal effectively with adversity. Certainly if the past year has taught you something, it has taught you resilience – and that may be the greatest gift of all.

To say that life is not easy is to simply repeat a tired cliché. But then again, life is not easy. Not everything comes on the first try. There will be many times ahead when you stumble or fall. There is nothing wrong with stumbling or falling. It is part of life and the road to ultimate success.

What separates the great from the merely good is resilience. You will not succeed if you do not, at times, stumble or fall or even fail. Nor will you learn anything from such stumble, unless you are resilient. All will be for naught unless you pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and move on. You must be

resilient and you must apply this resilience beyond your Senior Year.

It would be far too easy to complain about the things you “missed” this past year, or to think that this past year could have been “better” if only things had been “normal;” but don’t live a life of regrets. Whatever has happened, has happened. Learn from it. Appreciate that you have overcome a very difficult hand and move on. Be resilient.

And know that the School Board has every confidence in you and your potential. Having overcome the hardships of this past school year, and having shown resilience, know that you can overcome just about anything – and

no doubt you will.

When we look back at our high school years, COVID will not be among our first memories—

those will be the friendships we built, the memories we made, and the moments we cherished. Whether consciously or not, this sense of optimism is something that all of us in the Class of 2021 have exemplified throughout our four years here at Middletown High School. When it seemed like we could no longer balance everything that was going on—the constant barrage of homework from our classes, the clubs/sports we were involved in, the virtual learning on Zoom, the senior capstone project—there was something in the back of our minds telling us to just hang in there a little longer. Well that day is now, finally, here. And let’s enjoy it while we can.”

If you go to school for the sole purpose of learning, you’re doing it wrong.

Unfortunately, it took me eighteen years to realize this. When you attend an institution, you are met with a haze: grades. Grades are what block us from seeing what our true priorities should be and why we should go to school. I do not want to downplay the importance of academics, as education and synthesizing knowledge are essential, but it is more important to build connections and improve other intangibles such as character, especially for young students such as myself. I guarantee that by focusing on adding enriching experiences while going to school rather than just focusing on whether we get an A or B on a test, we will add considerably more value and purpose to our lives and have a greater, more inspirational impact on the people around us.

Anything we would want and need to know may be on the Internet; however, the education we receive is through our participation. It adds depth to all vital aspects of our lives by providing priceless experiences along the way.
