The MMC Student Grad Committee has been hard at work since we started school in September. Several fundraising events have taken place already and more are on the horizon.

What is Safe Grad? • Safe Grad is a PARENT-RUN event to ensure graduates have a safe,

accident-free and incident-free graduation celebration. • Safe Grad is under the control of the Manitoba School Boards’

Association, Safe Grad Manitoba, Manitoba Public Insurance, and the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries.

• As such, our Safe Grad Parent Committee must abide by the rules set down by Safe Grad Manitoba. The two primary rules for Safe Grad are: No grad and no guest will drive to or from the event. No one under the age of 18 will consume alcohol.

Who can attend the Grad Dinner & Dance?

• All MMC 2018 grads and potential grads • Each grad may bring one guest and his or her adult family members • Guests do not have to attend MMC • All guests, parents and family members pay full price for tickets

Ticket Pricing Final price - TBA in May, 2018 Anticipated Price: $80 per person Depends On:

• Success of Fundraising • Decoration Choices • Meal Choice • Extras – Photo Booth? Candy Bar?

FUNDRAISING INFORMATION

Why fundraise? • Fundraising cuts the cost of the event for all graduates.

• MMC grads’ ticket prices are reduced by the amount they raise according to the following formula:

Fundraise $1,000 = 100%

discount Fundraise $750 = 75%

discount Fundraise $500 = 50%

discount Fundraise $250 = 25%

discount

• Even if you fundraise $1,000, DON’T STOP! The more money we raise through fundraising the better event we can create and the cheaper tickets will be for everyone!

Current Fundraisers:

• Booster Juice Sales – Every Wednesday at lunch in the Tunnel. 710ml for $5. (Purchase of Booster Juice is open to all staff and students and does not go towards students’ individual fundraising goals.)

• Booster Juice Vouchers Every Wednesday at lunch in the Tunnel. Vouchers are $5 each and allow the bearer to purchase any regular sized juice at any Winnipeg location. Voucher sales do count towards grade 12 students’ individual fundraising.

Upcoming Fundraisers: • DFS Christmas Catalogues – Orders Due Oct. 30 & 31 in the tunnel at

lunch • Mom’s Pantry – Round 2 – In time for your Easter baking • Coupon Books – Spring, 2017 • Grad Fashion Show – February 25, 2017 • Veseys Bulbs – Spring, 2017

IMPORTANT: If the cost of attending the Grad Dinner and Dance and Safe Grad is a financial burden to a graduate you know, please let Ms. Beebe know, as there are organizations such as Gowns for Grads that facilitate low-income students to ensure they too are able to join in the celebrations.

If you have questions about fundraising and other details about the grad dinner and dance, please contact Ms. Rhonda Beebe, Grad Teacher/Supervisor at [email protected]. For information on Convocation, please contact Vice-principal Mrs. Michelle Williams at [email protected]. For information on the Safe Grad Parent Committee or to volunteer, please contact Lisa Rempel at [email protected].

NIHONGO O NARAIMASHO! (Let’s learn Japanese!)

MINNA-SAN KONNICHIWA. Hello everyone!

What a great start we are having to the new school year. Our semester consists of the grade nine half course in Japanese and our grade eleven course.

Picture yourself learning a new language. Where are you? What does the place look like or sound like? Who is with you? Who else is around you?

If it were I answering those questions, I would think back to when I lived in Japan, surrounded by Japanese people, looking at Japanese things, doing Japanese activities, speaking and hearing Japanese. Since we live in Canada, the class has done its best to bring Japan here. Grade nine students have started the year learning the way Japanese people begin a lesson. In the language every class, a student leader starts the class by asking all to “stand”, “bow” and “Let’s begin.” (in Japanese, of course!). To which everyone replies in unison “Let’s begin”. Following that, learning to greet one another in the language allows them to use Japanese inside and outside of class. Since school has begun, I have been delighted to hear students using the greetings they have learned on Roch Street as I pass them on my bicycle in the morning or in the halls of school before and after lunch. “Konnichiwa, Kennedy-sensei!” is what I hear. It brings me back to the halls of the junior high I worked at in Kagoshima prefecture. Learning the 46 basic Japanese syllabary allows students to know how to pronounce words correctly and writing their names in katakana and romaji, students can see how their names look in another “alphabet” and are pronounced differently in that language. To go with that, Japanese manga (comics) created by students hang on the wall. Numbers 1-00, self-introductions, general questions like, “When is your birthday?” and popular Japanese anime (Doraemon) round out the rest of the way we bring Japan to the class, all of which are supported through computer apps (Quizlet.com) and old school games with playing cards (Speed Game), Rock, Paper, Scissors, and Bingo. It has been a good first month and next month promises to deliver too! TANOSHII-MI DESU NEE! (I’m looking forward to it!)

The grade eleven class is reminiscent of an English Language class in a cram school back in Japan. There are only eight students in this year’s grade 11 class and while small, it has its advantages. It has been about eight months since the students completed the grade ten course first semester last year so it has been nothing but review, review, and more review. A solid foundation is necessary to build on and everyone is working so hard to balance the demands of school life with studies. Family, jobs, school, and food are the building blocks of how we identify ourselves and everyone is working hard at reading, writing, speaking, and listening for those topics. The introduction of kanji and a small class size enables us to dive deeper into why words look the way they do furthering student interest in word origin and understanding of the language. Japan is called “NI-HON” in the language. Its meaning is “sun’s/day’s origin”. Being a country in the east, the sun rises from the direction of the land of Japan, thus we get the nickname of Japan as “the land of the rising sun”. All of that in two symbols that look like this 日本.

Reading is Thinking

Grade nine students with expectations of entering the International Baccalaureate program at Miles Macdonell in grade eleven are encouraged to take this course. Think

of it as an introduction to high school course. The emphasis is on how to meet the expectations of course work in high school that students can apply again in university. We have started the year by discovering who we are as learners. This includes taking a multiple intelligences test to find out our strengths and weaknesses when it comes to learning. It also involves self-reflection and the opinion of people we trust to help us better to understand ourselves. Students each created their own learner profile and were given the freedom to choose how they would like to share it with the class. The finished product included lists, pictorial representations, word splashes, dioramas, booklets, and oral presentations. This understanding of their own strengths and weaknesses has been applied in their next assignment on service. CAS stands for Creative Activity Service and is a project to be completed for students in the full International Baccalaureate program. Students learn about how they can apply their own strengths and abilities towards improving their community. In this assignment they will learn how to create a project plan to implement and how everyone has something that they can use to help others. As part of their learning, students from Mr. Kennedy’s Reading is Thinking class, joined with Ms. Dyck’s EAL class to share in the development of community by learning how to say general greetings in Arabic while practicing numbers in English through a game of cards. Through this activity, students experienced first hand their ability to make newcomers to Canada feel welcome in their school by extending friendship and learning together. Caring and open-mindedness are two of the traits of the IB Learner profile they were able to experience in this activity. Through their CAS project plans, they will be able to show how their projects can touch on the many other traits the IB program aims to develop in its students.

September at Miles Mac is always a busy month. For us in the Languages Department, we have two new teachers as part of our team: Mr. François Legoupil and Ms. Natasha Drobko, who are teaching French Immersion classes. Ms. Drobko is teaching Social Sciences classes as well. We wish them a good year and look forward to their contributions to our department and school. We also welcome another Spanish Languages assistant who is sponsored by the Spanish Government. Her name

is Ms. Alba Arcos Valle. She will be working part time at St. Boniface University and part time here at Miles Mac under the guidance of Senora Cardenas. For November, Spanish classes are getting ready to celebrate the Day of the Dead with the support of Alejandra Diaz, a Mexican visual artist that will be helping students play with papel mache. Our Languages literary magazine has decided its theme for this year’s edition! It will be: Sous la surface which translates to Under/Beneath the Surface. All language students are encouraged to submit original creative works to be published. To start off our many cultural activities, we are preparing to welcome individuals from Québec Cinema, who will provide a cinematic experience. On October 24th, they will bring a current French film to our theatre for viewing by all of our students enrolled in French: Communication and Culture and French Immersion courses. This cultural event will enrich students’ cultural knowledge and intercultural understanding as well as provide an opportunity to use their oral skills in a different context, a large-group discussion about the film, led by Québec Cinéma, after its projection. Further, we are looking forward to preparing all of our French and French Immersion students to participate in our Poetry competition: Les voix de la poésie, which will take place in December. More information to follow in the next newsletter! We thank students and staff, new and returning, for a great start to this school year!

FROM THE DESK OF YOUR ADDICTIONS FOUNDATION OF MANITOBA SCHOOL COUNSELLOR…

The most common questions I receive from students, parents and school staff are about Cannabis (marijuana, weed). On the brink of cannabis becoming legalized in Canada it is important to ensure that accurate information about cannabis is available so people can make informed choices about its use.

According to a 2013 UNICEF Office of Research report, Canadian youth are the top users of cannabis in the developed world. Alcohol is the only drug used more frequently by Canadian youth. Despite widespread belief amongst Canadians that cannabis use is not harmful, it is not a benign drug. Cannabis use can negatively affect both physical and mental health, brain function (memory, attention & thinking) and driving performance. For decades, cannabis plants have been selectively bred for increasing levels of its active ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC. Higher levels of THC are associated with increased likelihood of experiencing harms from cannabis use. Frequent use (daily or almost daily) is also a strong predictor of problems related to cannabis use.

The risks of cannabis use depend on a person’s physical health, the type of cannabis products used, and how often the products are used. We know that youth are at greater risk for issues related to cannabis use. These risks include:

• problems with thinking, memory or physical coordination • impaired perceptions or hallucinations • fatal & non-fatal injuries, including those from motor-vehicle accidents due to impairment • mental health problems & cannabis dependence • chronic respiratory or lung problems • reproductive problems.

Below are some excellent resources to help parents and youth obtain accurate information on cannabis as well as resources parents can use to talk with their youth about use.

• Help Your Teen Understand What’s Fact & Fiction About Marijuana (infographic) • Know the Health Effects (poster) • The Effects of Cannabis Use During Adolescence (report)

• “Cannabis Talk Kit: Know How to Talk with Your Teen” – that highlights the latest evidence on cannabis. I am available at Miles Mac Donnell and River East Off Campus on Mondays and Thursdays each week. If you have any questions about resources or you have concerns about your youth, please feel free to contact me at (204) 223-8829.

Buckeyes Golf

We would like to wish a hearty congratulations to the Miles Macdonell Golf team on a very successful fall season. The fall team represents Miles Macdonell in the conference (KPAC) championship and provincials if they qualify. Last spring we had thirty-one golfers compete in as many as four tournaments. From those results, the top four boys and top four girls were selected to participate in the fall season.

The girls who represented Miles Macdonell were Madeline Mann, Haley Rebeck, Britney Shiffman, and Meghan Walter. As a team, the girls finished second place. Individually Maddy Mann was 3rd, Haley Rebeck was 5th, and Meghan Walter was 6th. Well done ladies!

The boys who represented Miles Macdonell were Ryan McMillan, Brett Walter, Chase Dussesoy, and Blake Burr. The boys repeated as KPAC Champions with Ryan winning individually, Chase finishing 4th and Brett in a tie for 5th. By winning the KPAC championship, the boys qualified for the provincial championship hosted by Gilbert Plains. On a blustery day with intermittent rain, Ryan repeated as the individual champion. As a team, the boys finished a respectable fourth failing to defend their provincial championship won in 2016.

A special thank-you to graduating players Madeline Mann, Ryan McMillan, Chase Dusessoy, and Brett Walter. The coaching staff appreciates the leadership you have provided as we have made the Buckeye golf program unique in Manitoba with many athletes learning the game and participating in competitive golf.

New golfers of all abilities will be welcome next spring as we prepare the next round of Buckeye Golf Champions!
