a nightstand, lamp, clock-radio boudoir chair or chaise, and a bench to accommodate suitcases. A nice touch is to have some current reading material on the nightstand, and some personal amenities in a basket (mini sizes of soaps, shampoos, etc.). Your guests won’t want to leave!

Cigar RoomIf there is an aficionado in the

household who is tired of standing in the yard to smoke cigars, a spare room can be turned into a handsome retreat. Think of rich woods, soothing paint color, a leather chair and ottoman, perhaps even a mini entertainment center with a small flat screen, and built-in humidor. The most important aspect of a cigar room, no matter where in the house it is located, is to have its own ventilation unit to keep the cigar smoke from filtering to other areas of the home.

Hint: Paint color can expand the perception of space. A long room can look wider by painting both shorter walls a darker color than the larger walls. Warm colors decrease the apparent size of a room and lighter colors can expand a room. To add more depth to a room or for visual interest, paint one wall a half shade deeper than the other three. Mirrors also perceptively increase the size of the room and reflect, too.

You get what you give. At some point in your life you have undoubtedly had someone speak those words to you. It applies in our personal lives as well as in our pro-fessional lives. In our businesses we make plans for mar-keting, sales, growth and much more. To accomplish the goals, we give our time, knowledge and money to make our companies stronger. If you are reading this letter you have most likely given money to Milwaukee NARI for membership. That is the first step, but it can’t stop there if you think you’re going to get the most of your member-ship. Membership is just the start of the benefit. Your company needs give a little time and energy for the full value and experience of what NARI and the Milwaukee chapter has to offer. Take a NARI University class, attend the Supplier & Remodeler Expo, exhibit in a consumer show or come to a networking event; these are just a few examples of how to participate and start experiencing the benefits. If you are not sure about how to get engaged, I am always available to discuss the possibilities with you.

Coming up this month is the 55th Annual Spring Home Improvement Show, held at the Wisconsin State Fair Expo-sition Center. The four-day event is arguably the largest home show in the country and will be held on February 16th through the 19th. The show is not for every member. However, I encourage you to attend the event and see how Milwaukee NARI promotes the overall brand that you are a part of. If you are thinking about exhibiting in the show in the future this is a perfect opportunity to see and experience this incredible event that you will want to be a part of.

Speaking of spring, the Tour of Remodeled Homes this May will be upon us before you know it. This year we are launching an exciting partnership with The Vince Lom-bardi Cancer Foundation. If you have not participated in the Tour before, this is the year to get involved!

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who participated in and attended the Wisconsin Remodeler Awards. It was another successful year of amazing projects showcasing the talent and professionalism of the membership and I congratulate all the winners. The turnout at the awards ceremony was incredible. I witnessed the benefits of membership as our members congratulated each other, networked and just simply had a great time with their friends and colleagues within our fantastic remodeling community. Once again the giving of time to enter and attend this event gave so much more to these members in return. Remember, you get what you give from your Milwaukee NARI Membership.

Sincerely,Josh Brown Milwaukee NARI President

Chances are your mom taught you the basics of construction using building blocks as a child. It’s

likely your dad taught you how to safely handle a hammer and the science behind using it as a lever to remove a bent nail. Maybe you built a tree fort with friends or a bookcase in woodshop. Some of you went to Trade School and Techni-cal College to learn the things you can’t pick up outside the classroom.

Studies show while more college tuition is spent on digital technology, the supply of techies is beginning to out-weigh the demand. Simultaneously, the construction and remodeling industries are seeing a demand for skilled workers where the supply has been diminishing. Our kids are being “over-educated” with college degrees that aren’t sufficient for providing one of the most basic of hu-man needs: shelter.

There aren’t enough young people entering into the skilled trades: weld-ing, AC & Heating, electric, plumbing, landscaping, etc. Most parents steer their kids towards careers where they are told to “work smarter, not harder.” They openly discourage going into the trades as some sort of “last resort job”.

Well, guess what? Without the knowl-edge and skill sets you possess, Millen-nials would have no homes and Silicon Valley would have no office campuses.

The Milwaukee/NARI Foundation provides funding for equipment, con-tinued education for you and scholar-ships for young people entering into the skilled trades. The Starr Group sup-ports that fund through a program built with YOU in mind.

Besides protecting your business with insurance, risk transfer and safety training, The Starr Group’s interest in your business goes a step beyond. Since

2008, NARI members insured through The Starr Group with Frankenmuth Insurance saw 1-2% of their premiums donated to the Milwaukee/NARI Foun-dation. You’ve seen our ads (below) enough to know the Foundation has received $106,531 to date in donations supporting you and the future of your industry -- your kids.

Somewhere along the way, you learned the concepts and acquired the skills and tools needed to succeed in the construction and remodeling industry. Who are your children learning from? Will they have the same opportunities you had? Will they have the resources to follow in your footsteps? With Milwau-kee/NARI Foundation and The Starr Group, the answer is “Yes”!

A benefit of insuring your business through The Starr Group and Fran-kenmuth Insurance is the 5% discount NARI members receive on their policies. That’s an article for a future issue of your NARI newsletter. Of course--if you don’t want to wait for that information, call a representative at The Starr Group today 1-414-421-3800 and start benefit-ing from your partnership with us!

REMODELING CAN REVEAL HIDDEN FIREPLACE DEFICIENCIES

Question: While remodeling a client’s Great room we removed the fireplace face and noticed the 2x4 framing and header turning a blackish color but not charring above the fireplace opening be-hind the fascia. The customer is considering a fireplace insert. Will this help contain the heat from surrounding combustibles verses replacing all of the framing? They have a rather tall cathedral ceil-ing that might become cost prohibitive.

Answer: Absolutely not! All manufacturers state that a fireplace insert regardless of fuel type should only be installed into a fireplace that meets code and does not have defects. What you are describing is most likely the beginning stage of pyrolysis of the wood due to excessive heat too close to combustibles. Installing a fireplace insert will increase the heat signature by greatly de-creasing the amount of delusion air into the system. This fireplace should have a Level ll Inspection as spelled out in NFPA 211 to see why the framing is discolored and to determine the source of excessive heat transfer. All combustibles need to maintain a minimum two-inch clearance from the fireplace in this area and needs to be open not filled with insulation.Another option to consider would be a UL Listed Ahren-Fire system fireplace that allows combus-tibles to come in contact with the exterior masonry of the fireplace.

Each month we have members who choose to not renew their membership saying things like “I didn’t get anything out of my membership” or “I never got a lead from Milwaukee NARI.” In checking our records these members never attended an educational opportunity, membership meeting, networking event, participated in our consumer shows or anything NARI had to offer. If you have joined NARI and not put forth the effort to use your membership, we might be having the same conver-sation with you too. This is like the many businesses and industries that have gone extinct because they had the impression if they flip the open sign on consumers will give them business.

Belonging to NARI is about strengthen you the mem-ber - contractor or affiliate. NARI’s strength is to provide members tools and resources to strengthen themselves for long term sustainability. It’s part of our mission to be a community of industry professionals. In specifically the view of the contractor, belonging only to a company that just provides leads is giving someone a fish. The open sign is on and someone might walk through the door. It might feed the business today, but is it really benefit-ing the business long term? Teaching the contractor how to be a good business person and providing the tools and resources to develop and grow the business is what a professional membership organization like NARI does. We provide the resources to keep the open sign on through professional business practices and teach you to fish for long term business.

Lead generation companies can’t promise revenue. You pay for a hope of leads and little else in return. NARI you pay with no promise of revenue either. But there is a return. If you use your membership correctly (key word USE), there are benefits to you in many ways that go beyond business run by hope or thinking consum-

ers will give you business because the open sign is on. If your business plan is to hope the phone rings, join a lead generation company only. If your business plan is actionable to grow by improving your business opera-tions and deliverables to the customer, for sustainable long term business, join NARI. Together we can keep your open sign on as a professional in the industry.

As always I welcome your thoughts to improve your association and your business or a dialog on how you can contribute your knowledge, skills and passion for the remodeling industry to your association for greater return on your investment. You can reach me by phone (414-771-4071) or email at [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at the next Milwaukee NARI event.
