The oldest crossroad was the earliest developed area in Tainan. With the flourishing business of this area, residents strove for the

space by the side streets to earn more opportunity, therefore, the architecture form of the street house appeared.

One of the most significant characters of the architecture form of the street house is long and narrow, sharing the same walls

between one and another, which is also a great limit to the usage of space.

With a transformed architecture form of the street house, there are freer usage for the street houses, allowing more kinds of

activities to happen in the same area and bringing new life to the original place and business.

Tainan, as the earliest developed city in Taiwan, is a city with architecures built in different periods in the history.

One of the common type of architecture is street house, which was the shop-house type of building first introduced by the Japanese about

100 years ago. The street house is long and narrow, sharing the same walls between one and another.

Nowadays, there are still some typical street houses remain in Tainan. Some remains the original look, some are deconstructed, still some

are developed into new form. The developed form of street house is creating more usage to the spaces, and it also becomes a trend in Tainan to

reform the space of typical buildings while combining the ancient and present.

TainanTaiwan

In Taiwan, people enjoy drinking tea everyday. Because of the weather and

the rapid city life, there are lots of tea shops providing cold and take-out drinks.

The drinking business became a part of Taiwanese life. In the high-density

area, the business competition between the tea shops is very intense.

Take Tainan city for example, in the denset area (East district and

Middle-West district), there are approximately 200 tea shops within 9 km². And in

the most competitive area, there are 7 tea shops in 100 meter of one road.

Due to the character of the drinking business--fast and take-out, the

disposible cups are widely used in tea shops. The materials of disposible cups

includes paper, plastics and polystyrene. Among the materials, plastic is mostly

used.

These materials are recyclable. If the cups are thrown as litter, they

occupied a lot of space and cause some environmental problems. On the other

hand, if they are recycled properly, the cleaners can pile them up.

17

The concept of this temperary shelter is by using the disposible cups to remind people of the consumption of resources.

The other materials used in the temperary shelter are commonly used in Taiwan, including angle steel as structure, corrugated

sheet and canvas as roof surface and wire netting as wall. By using this materials, the temperary shelter can be built in a low

budget so it can be used as rest station for expo and other activities. And the other character of the construction of the

temperary shelter is module, and therefore it become a portable construction that can be build up and taken up to other

places.

The Sensori-motor CityWorkshop

In the Sensori-motor City workshop, we had chances to work with teachers from the Drawing Lab Team in Parsons

The New School. The Drawing Lab team includes interdisciplinary teachers. We held the exhibition with the teachers.

Started from analyzing three directors’ films (Yasujirō Ozu, Godard , Cassavetes) and the results of the workshop in

Taiwan, and carry on with the form of the exhibition. We worked on arranging the gallery, rehearsing the actions of the

films, and drawing the movements and the space to simulate video camera.
