From the COOsIn September we were proud to be part of the official opening of the newly heated Mount Isa pool; a project that will see the pool stay open throughout the year.

Through our Glencore Community Program North Queensland (GCPNQ) we committed $130,000 to heat the pool and allow the facility to open during the cooler months. This means more opportunities for local children to take part in learn-to-swim classes and swimming squads throughout the year, and a greater capacity to facilitate year-round adult aquatic exercise classes.

This partnership not only provides a fantastic recreational facility for the Mount Isa community to enjoy, but will also help promote a more active community lifestyle year-round.

Helping to improve the health of our people is important to their fitness for work and a key part of our occupational health and safety strategy.

Each year, our north Queensland operations support a variety of health initiatives and services to improve the wellbeing of our people.

One such initiative has been our Shape Up Online program; a web-based, interactive health and wellness portal for our employees and their families. Since its launch last year, more than 500 people have signed up for information on maintaining a healthy weight, getting active, beating stress and quitting smoking. With a focus on supporting healthy lifestyle choices, Shape Up Online provides users with professional, tailored advice and information to help them live well.

As we move into the summer months, we encourage everyone to take the opportunity to review their health and fitness. The Mount Isa pool is one of the great community assets available supported by Mount Isa Mines.

Pioneering Technology For a period in 1980, Mount Isa Mines was Australia’s largest company, having pioneered several significant mining industry innovations which have since been widely adopted around the world.

These included the ISA PROCESS™ copper refining technology, the ISASMELT™

smelting technology, the IsaMill™ fine grinding technology, and the commercialisation of the Jameson Cell flotation technology.

The focus on paving the way in industrial innovation was a result of the difficult nature of the Mount Isa ore bodies and in response to declining metal prices

and rising operational costs in the 1970s and 1980s. By the 1990s, Mount Isa Mines had become a world leader in innovative mining techniques and state-of-the-art processing technologies.

One of our first major breakthrough innovations came in 1978 when Copper Refineries Limited, then a subsidiary of Mount Isa Mines, developed the ISA PROCESS™ copper refining technology. Today this technology is globally

regarded as the preferred copper refining method, with more than 100 licensees using the technology around the world with an installed capacity of more than 12 megatonnes of high quality copper production. The ISA PROCESS™ revolutionized copper refining by replacing copper cathode-starter-sheets with stainless steel sheets and making what was a labour-intensive process mechanised and more energy efficient.

At around the same time, Mount Isa Mines together with the Australian Government’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) began developing the energy-efficient ISASMELT™ smelting technology. After laboratory testing of a potential lead smelting process at the CSIRO’s Melbourne facility, Mount Isa Mines moved to a 120 kilogram per hour test rig in our Lead Smelter in 1980, then to a five tonne per hour pilot plant in 1983.

This was followed by the development of a copper smelting process and the construction of a 15 tonne per hour copper ISASMELT™ demonstration plant in the Copper Smelter in 1987. Our plant operators’ involvement during the development was one of the key contributors to the success of the ISASMELT™ technology, as it ensured the technology was practical and robust, and therefore widely adopted by other operations.

In 1992, Mount Isa Mines commissioned an ISASMELT™ furnace to replace one of two reverberatory furnaces in the Copper Smelter and treat 104 tonnes per hour of concentrate, producing 180,000 tonnes per year of copper. Throughput was

initially constrained by interactions with the remaining reverberatory furnace, resolved in 1997 with the closure of the fluidized bed roaster and the remaining reverberatory furnace and the addition of a fourth Peirce-Smith converter and a second oxygen plant. As a result, the ISASMELT™ furnace throughput was boosted to more than 160 tonnes per hour of concentrate.

Since then, the simple, flexible and efficient ISASMELT™ technology has been adopted by operations all over the world. Currently, there are 15 ISASMELT™ plants operating in 10 different countries, with many more licensed and under design. These smelters process a variety of minerals and materials including copper

concentrate, lead concentrate and scrap feeds. Together these plants smelt nearly 12 million tonnes of material every year.

In 1985, Mount Isa Mines enlisted Professor Graeme Jameson from the University of Newcastle to improve the performance of the flotation columns used in the recovery process of the Zinc-Lead Concentrator. Professor Jameson came up with the idea of intensely mixing air and concentrate slurry in a specially designed pipe, now known as the ‘downcomer’, inserted into the flotation column. This resulted in a finer bubble size−important for recovery of the fine minerals present in Mount Isa’s ore−a much more robust operation, and a smaller equipment size than traditional flotation columns. This was the birth of the ‘Jameson Cell’.

Professor Jameson patented the cell in 1986 and a two tonne per hour pilot cell was tested in Mount Isa in 1986. In 1988, Mount Isa Mines decided to increase the capacity of its Heavy Medium Plant slimes flotation circuit to improve lead recovery. Following investigations of various alternatives, two full-scale Jameson Cells were installed in the Zinc-Lead Concentrator in 1989.

In April 1989, Mount Isa Mines acquired the international rights to the metallurgical applications of the Jameson Cell and began marketing the technology while developing it further. By 2013, there were more than 320 Jameson Cells operating globally in coal and base and precious metal flotation circuits, as well as industrial minerals, oil sands and leach-solvent extraction-electrowinning, or SX-EW process.

The next improvement target was grinding, a process that was long overdue for efficiency improvements. This became critical from the mid-1980s as metal recoveries from the Zinc-Lead Concentrator dropped due to the increasingly fine grain size of the ore. A method for grinding ore more finely was needed to separate the valuable lead and zinc mineral particles from each other and from waste.

After a worldwide search for an appropriate technology, Mount Isa Mines entered a joint development program with the German company Netzsch-Feinmahltechnik GmbH. This partnership led to the development of a highly energy-efficient horizontal-stirred mill known as the IsaMill™. In addition

to being more efficient, IsaMill™ uses inert grinding medium (like ceramic balls, smelter slag or silica sand) that provide clean mineral surfaces ideal for the subsequent flotation process, further enhancing mineral recovery.

After testing prototypes at various scales, the first full-scale IsaMill™ was installed in the Mount Isa Zinc-Lead Concentrator in 1994, followed by others in Mount Isa and at McArthur River Mine in the Northern Territory in 1995. Once again, developing the technology from concept through prototypes to commercial scale was done within a working plant, with critical input from operators and maintenance personnel. Mount Isa Mines began licensing the technology in 1999.

Almost 20 years on, there are now more than 120 mills installed in concentrators around the world, in zinc and lead applications as well as precious metals, iron ore, PGMs, industrial and copper and molybdenum applications. Furthermore the technology has seen considerable advancement, moving from ultra fine applications to courser regrind applications.

Today Glencore’s technology subsidiary XT continues to market and support the ISA PROCESS™ (now known as IsaKIDD™), ISASMELT™, IsaMill™ and the Jameson Cell worldwide in addition to developing and marketing other leading products such as the Albion Process™, HyperSparge™ and ZipaTank™ for the global mineral processing and metals smelting and refining industries.

On Sunday, 15 September the community was invited to celebrate the official opening of the heated pool with free entry and a sausage sizzle provided to more than 700 people eager to test the warmer water.

Steve de Kruijff, Chief Operating Officer Copper Assets Australia says the re-opening of the pool as a heated facility provides many benefits for our community, from enabling children to learn to swim all year round to providing a warm water sports rehabilitation facility for injured and elderly patrons.

“It will be great to see people using the pool during the cooler weather for swimming lessons, conditioning training, rehabilitation and general recreation,” Steve says.

“We received a lot of feedback that the community wanted a heated pool and we listened.

“We know that by improving local services and facilities we are helping to increase the liveability and vibrancy of our community.”

The Hon Tony McGrady, Mayor of Mount Isa says he is delighted that the project has come to fruition.

“Once again I must extend a heartfelt thanks to Mount Isa Mines for their generous support of this project and being the outstanding corporate citizen that they are,” Cr McGrady says.

Brian Rodriquez, Director Mount Isa Aquatics, who manages the pool says he has received some great feedback from the community and is looking forward to the greater opportunities for Mount Isa.

“The introduction of heated water and year-round training will provide current and future swimmers with the same opportunities afforded to clubs Australia wide,” Brian says.

“Not only will this extend the swimming season, but it will also allow Mount Isa Aquatics to work with regional and state bodies to bring new swimming opportunities to the town and the region.

“This project brings the Mount Isa swimming story full circle, and once again Mount Isa swimming can flourish and focus on performance swimming.”

History of the pool Originally built in 1949 and named the ‘Mount Isa Mines Memorial Pool’, the post-World War II project was dedicated to employees of Mount Isa Mines and citizens of Mount Isa who gave their lives in defence of our country.

It was built by Mount Isa Mines and continued to be run by the company until 1995, when it was handed over to the Mount Isa City Council.

The 50-metre pool was originally six lanes wide, with a smaller wading pool on the grounds which was decommissioned when the larger children’s pool was installed in 2000.

Throughout the 1950s the pool was home to the Mount Isa Amateur Swimming Club and the Black Star Swimming Club, as well as a diving team.

Teams regularly travelled to Townsville for competitions and in 1959 the Mount Isa Amateur Swimming Club won the North Queensland Club Championships. This was the first time a club that wasn’t

based on the coast won this competition.

The strength of Mount Isa’s swimmers was evident in 1962, when one third of all Queensland’s swimming records were held by Mount Isans.

Water polo fixtures were a favourite on Sunday nights during the 1980s and 1990s with fierce competition displayed between teams.

Over the years Mount Isa has produced some successful swimmers, including Bill Burton who won a silver medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics; Warwick Webster who made the South African Olympic team; Billy Sweetenhan, Head Coach of the Australian swimming team for five Olympics; Rita Oravainen and John Oravainen who competed in the 1962 Commonwealth Games and the 1964 Tokyo Olympics; Elli Overton who competed at the Barcelona, Atlanta and Sydney Olympics; and Michelle Bate who was the youngest member of the 1992 Paralympics swimming team.

GFM cracks one year LTI free milestoneIn August, for the first time in more than a decade, George Fisher Mine (GFM) reached one year Lost Time Injury (LTI) free; an extraordinary achievement for a site with a 1000-strong workforce.

Joe Golling, General Manager GFM says the team can put the achievement down to better communication and

reporting, team coaching, an authority for anyone to stop work if safety is at risk and an innovative pre-start fit-for-work program.

“I couldn’t pin the milestone on any one safety program but perhaps the greatest shift in thinking over the past two years is it’s now very clear what our own personal responsibilities are when it comes to keeping ourselves and our work mates safe,” Joe says.

“We’ve rolled out team and one-on-one coaching to really drill home what our individual responsibilities are. We all have a voice at GFM. If people see something that isn’t right, they have the authority to stop work, whoever they are.

“That sense of personal accountability is really working for safety as well as production. We are seeing great results on all safety measures.”

The coaching forms part of the Safety Leadership Program under the Xceed Leadership Series which aims to improve business performance and workplace culture within Glencore’s Australian zinc assets.

Another program credited for reducing workplace injuries has been the SafeStart program.

A clear trend in injury analysis in Mount Isa demonstrated that manual task related injuries to the back, neck, shoulder, knee and ankle were the highest contributing injuries for the site and had the greatest long-term impact on our employees.

SafeStart involves a pre-shift warm-up and conditioning routine designed to prepare the body and mind for daily work activities. The program has played a role in reducing the number of workplace musculoskeletal injures sustained at GFM in 2012.

“SafeStart has helped our people improve flexibility and reduce the aches, pains and niggles often felt by people in physically demanding roles,” Joe says.

Joe says the aim is to keep the safety momentum going with the goal of achieving two years’ LTI-free.

“We can deserve to congratulate ourselves on one year LTI-free but we can’t take the foot off the peddle. There’s no time to relax when it comes to safety. It must remain top of mind in everything we do,” Joe says.

The SafeStart pre-shift warm-up and conditioning routine is one of the programs that has helped see a significant improvement in GFM’s safety performance

In September, Mount Isa Mines hosted His Excellency Mr Pasi Patokallio, Finnish Ambassador to Australia and his wife Mrs Raija Patokallio on a tour of our operations during the Ambassador’s visit to the north west.

His Excellency’s visit was a tribute to the importance of Mount Isa to the history of Finnish migration in Australia, and recognises the role the Finnish community has played in the growth of our operations and our great city from the beginning.

The awards, presented by the Queensland Government, recognise the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations within the vocational education and training sector and highlight the significant contribution they make to the wider community and economy.

This year, the award drew eight of Queensland’s highest-flying apprentices from four different trade disciplines, including five electricians, a boilermaker, a carpenter and a chef.

Passionate about encouraging young people to consider a trade as a rewarding career pathway, Fletcher thanked the award organisers for shining the spotlight on the achievements of apprentices.

“It was a huge honour and very humbling to be recognised alongside the other outstanding finalists,” Fletcher said.

“I would like to thank the Queensland Government and Training Queensland for promoting and supporting trade pathways as the real and valuable career options they are, and for giving us all the opportunity to be recognised on such a big stage.”

Mount Isa born-and-bred Fletcher commenced his apprenticeship with Mount Isa Mines in 2009 and received his trade qualification and electrical license in November 2012.

LE72 is a secondary and tertiary crusher, with ore first milled through a primary crushing

process which takes place at GFM and within the operations located in Mount Isa. Once the expansion project is complete, scheduled for late 2014, all GFM ore will be crushed on site.

When originally commissioned, the LE72 was operating at 400 tonnes per hour. Through a series of improvements, the plant is now operating at around 600 tonnes per hour with the capacity to produce 750 tonnes per hour.

Ben Milligan, Maintenance Manager GFM says his department has been working tirelessly not only to improve the throughput capacity of the plant but also reduce the amount of downtime experienced and improve general working conditions.

“In the last year we have invested more than $2.5 million in improvement projects, most significantly the automation of the plant, making life easier for our operators and improving overall operational efficiency,” Ben says.

“When LE72 was first handed over to the Maintenance team the plant was operator-intensive, meaning individual operators were responsible for manually controlling the feed rate of multiple variable speed feeders to ensure steady performance of the plant.

“This would often lead to bogging, overloading or under loading of belts, empty and overfilling of surge bins and crash stopping of the plant.”

Through automation and various other improvements we have succeeded in achieving a more stable plant performance and reduced unscheduled stoppages, increasing the plant’s availability by more than 10 per cent.

George Fisher Mine (GFM) has halved its freshwater consumption by better

tapping into the site’s process water network.

The process water network recycles water from GFM’s mining and processing operations for re-use in other areas and applications, including in water trucks for dust suppression.

GFM’s Maintenance team came up with an option to relocate the Handlebar Hill Open Cut (HHOC) standpipe used for filling water trucks and connect it to the GFM process water network to reduce HHOC’s reliance on freshwater.

Improvements to the capacity of our process water network were made in order to accommodate the demand

Ben says the automation project would not have been such a success without the critical input from our LE72 plant operators and maintainers whose valuable insight, ongoing patience and feedback identified the key issues that needed to be addressed to achieve a steady operation.

“I’d like to extend my gratitude to the entire maintenance department for their continued dedication throughout the long course of this project, and to our Mechanical Engineer Ryan Nicholls who took a lead role in implementing the improvement programs.”

Since commissioning, the crusher has now achieved a throughput of 3.7 million tonnes to date, a significant achievement for the surface crusher’s first year of operation.

created by relocating the standpipe. Additional flow metres were also installed on the process water network to better monitor where re-used water is going and establish how much water is actually being used for dust suppression.

The project commenced in April with water savings valued at about $15,000 per week observed by the end of June.

Additionally, as the standpipe was automated during the relocation project, operators no longer need to exit their cabin to fill their trucks. Instead, they can now stay inside the cabin during refill, using a remote control to operate the standpipe pump. This change will significantly improve the safety of water truck operators, particularly in conditions of reduced visibility and at night.

Completed in early September, the chamber will house the underground crusher, which

will crush ore before it’s hoisted to the surface for processing through EHM’s concentrator.

Construction works for the crusher have commenced and pre-assembly of mechanical items are continuing on the surface.

Other infrastructure works will soon complete the ore crushing and conveying circuit, including a 600-metre conveyor system and a loading station surge bin. The conveyor system transports ore from the crusher to the loading station where it is stored before being transported to the surface in skips via the shaft hoisting system.

OPER AT IONS

Adam Beswick, Manager Underground Infrastructure EHM says these vital infrastructure works are key in transitioning the decline underground mine to an underground shaft mine.

“Once the shaft hoisting system and its supporting infrastructure is commissioned in the first half of 2014 we will officially transition to an underground shaft mine, doubling our current production rate to approximately six million tonnes per year,” Adam says.

“This is something we have been working towards since 2009, and will represent the completion of the transition of EHM from an open pit to an underground mine, extending the life of our mine to at least 2024 and taking us into steady-state operations.”

The awards, hosted by the Queensland Government, the Queensland Resources Council

and mining unions CFMEU and AWU, recognise creative and practical solutions to personal and occupational health problems and promote their application across the resources sector.

Our MTRC program is a systematic process of analysing manual tasks (tasks that require the use of the physical body) to effectively identify and control manual task risks. Judges congratulated Mount Isa Mines for demonstrating such commitment to the prevention of manual task related injuries, which are a significant safety issue for the mining industry.

In 2012, almost all work injuries recorded on our site were directly or indirectly related to the performance of a manual task. These injuries can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of our people,

as well as the productivity and sustainability of our operations.

Maryann Wipaki, Manager Sustainable Development Mount Isa Mines says implementing effective, sustainable controls that decrease both the occurrence and consequence of manual task related injury was a key focus for injury prevention initiatives across Mount Isa Mines’ operations.

“Mining is a physically demanding industry, so it stands to reason that manual task related injuries are well represented statistically; however, this doesn’t mean we should accept these statistics,” Maryann says.

“The MTRC allows us to comprehensively map the huge range of manual tasks performed in various roles across our site. With the input of our operators, we can then develop effective solutions and aids that will minimise the risk of our people

sustaining an injury while carrying out their work.

“I would like to congratulate our safety and health professionals, as well as the operators who take part in our MTRC program, for their work in developing such an important process for protecting our people from workplace injury. In particular, I would like to recognise Joel Edson, our site Occupational Therapist, who coordinated this initiative.”

If you are interested in being involved in the MTRC program and would like your role assessed by our Occupational Health team, contact your supervisor and area safety advisor. For more information on the MTRC program, phone Joel Edson, Occupational Therapist Mount Isa Mines on 07 4744 2137.

Swingin’ Utes Mount Isa’s 90th birthday party

In July, country music star Troy Cassar-Daley and jazz virtuoso James Morrison joined the Queensland Youth Orchestra Big Band and more than 200 Mount Isa school children for ‘Swingin’ Utes’; a signature outback event celebrating Mount Isa’s 90th birthday.

Mount Isa Mines was the major sponsor for this unique event featuring food market stalls, a ‘Show and Shine’ ute

display and an impressive showcase of local and international talent including a choir of 200 children singing ‘Mount Isa, 90 Years Strong’; a commemorative ballad composed by John Rodgers and Megan Samardin.

Swingin’ Utes provided a free night of fun and entertainment for the whole family. Additionally, the months of preparation leading up to the event provided an opportunity for local musicians to collaborate with the best in the business to develop their skills, strengthen existing education programs, build performance experience and foster a strong sense of community identity and pride.

Steve de Kruijff, Chief Operating Officer Copper Assets Australia says it was a pleasure to collaborate with the Queensland Music Festival and the Mount Isa City Council to bring this unique event to the north west.

“We’re proud to celebrate our 90th birthday with such a unique cultural event, and also provide an opportunity for local performers to showcase their talent on a big stage,” Steve says.

Swingin’ Utes adds to a number of community events supported by Mount Isa Mines as our city marks 90 years since discovery, including the NRL Cowboys vs Broncos trial game in February, the Mount Isa Mining Expo in April, the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo in August and the upcoming Lake Moondarra Fishing Classic, which kicks off on 24 October.

Hailing from both our EHM and Mount Margaret Mining operations, the new additions

bring EHM’s full squad compliment to 40.

The rookies commenced their first eight-day training block in June, learning theory and practical skills in open circuit breathing apparatus, hazardous materials and fire response.

The following month, the group moved on to vertical and confined space rescue training, and in September completed modules in underground search and rescue, gas testing, searching in black-out conditions, route marking, stretcher-carrying and road crash rescue.

Alistair Chowding, Trainer RECEO Solutions, the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) that delivers the rookie course, commended the new recruits on their motivation and focus.

“As a trainer, I get great satisfaction from seeing our ERT rookies come in ‘green’, and in just a short time grasp the skills they need to come together as a team of mine rescue professionals,” Alastair says.

To complement their emergency response training, the rookies will soon complete a five-day course in occupational emergency care. Once this course is complete, the rookies will be eligible to participate in ongoing training with the Queensland Ambulance Service.

EHM Emergency Management advisors Jeremy Grace and Steve Kuskopf, who helped deliver the rookie training course, also had their skills as trainers assessed over the three-month training course period. Both are now certified trainer and assessors, qualified to deliver nationally recognised competency based training resulting in a Certificate III in Mine Rescue.

“It’s been a two-year plan to get us to the stage of co-delivering mine emergency response and rescue training as part of an RTO partnership agreement,” Jeremy says.

“This allows us to provide consistent and tailored emergency response training so teams are fully capable to respond to emergencies on site.”

The Townsville Hospital’s Emergency Department is now fully equipped to diagnose

serious eye injuries and diseases quickly and efficiently with a new, state-of-the-art ophthalmological slit lamp and camera, thanks to a $21,000 donation through our Townsville operations’ Community Assistance Program.

The slit lamp uses high-intensity light to provide a magnified, three-dimensional view of the structures of the eye, and is used to diagnose a wide range of major eye diseases and conditions like cataracts, corneal injuries, diabetic retinopathy, toxoplasmosis, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa and retinal detachment.

Dr Denise Blake, Townsville Emergency Department Staff Specialist says the new equipment will increase the hospital’s capacity to provide best-practice response to cases of acute eye injury, as well as diagnose degenerative eye conditions.

“The most common eye injury presentation in the Emergency Department is a foreign body in the eye. From an emergency treatment perspective, the equipment provides an excellent view of foreign bodies in the eye so we can remove the object safely,” Dr Blake says.

“The slit lamp will also allow the hospital to provide state-of-the-art specialist ophthalmological services to patients, and the ability to provide images of the eye will play a valuable role in engaging our patients and increasing their understanding of their condition, as well as assisting doctor-patient communication and doctor education.”

Since 2005, we have provided more than $200,000 to the Townsville Hospital Foundation to fund the purchase of vital medical equipment.

David Worlein, Manager Townsville Copper Refinery says this most recent provision of funding fortifies our long-standing partnership with the Townsville Hospital Foundation and demonstrates our commitment to improving the quality of health services in our communities.

“We are so proud to continue our support of the Townsville Hospital Foundation, and we trust the addition of the slit lamp and camera to the suite of diagnostic equipment available at the Townsville Hospital will further increase access to emergency and specialist treatment services in north Queensland,” David says.

The Sport for Life program aims to promote healthy living and build self confidence through participation in sport and recreation. The workshops give young people an opportunity to engage in a range of sporting activities while developing valuable life skills such as positive communication, problem solving and self esteem.

Around 180 students in grades 3, 4 and 5 from Sunset State School, Healy State School and Townview State School took part in a series of hip hop workshops under the tutelage of local Mount Isa dancer Jericho Young and Melbourne-based dancer Billy Parker, both from the Indigenous Hip Hop Project.

Billy says hip hop is a great way to connect with kids of all ages.

“It brings confidence to the kids and it’s an exciting way to engage while boosting self-esteem and confidence,” Billy says.

The Sport for Life program has been successfully delivered in Mount Isa since 2010, with over 1,400 young people participating in the program.

Money donated to the North Queensland Helicopter Rescue Service (NQ Rescue) helps provide the aerial medical rescue and retrieval service with the funding it requires to continue assisting people in need across the north west.

In 2012 our operations entered into a three-year partnership with NQ Rescue to ensure it can continue to provide a viable full-time rescue helicopter service to the north west, free of charge.

This year, the service has responded to more than 20 calls for help, including four retrievals from mine sites across the North West Minerals Province.

Alex Dorr, Chief Executive Officer NQ Rescue says the service relies on donations to keep their helicopter flying.

“It is costly to keep our helicopter in the air, so we rely heavily on the generosity of businesses and individuals, particularly through programs such as Glencore’s Workplace Giving,” Alex says.

“Every dollar donated to help our service counts, and we thank all Glencore’s employees across north Queensland for their valuable and much appreciated support.”

Productivity the mother of all inventions at GFM

Since January this year, the George Fisher Mine (GFM) Maintenance team has achieved a 14 per cent

reduction in unscheduled machinery downtime for heavy fleet machinery.

Unscheduled downtime for plant and mine equipment represents one of the biggest areas of lost productivity across our operations. So when the team was asked to address the issue of lost time due to unplanned maintenance and repairs, the floodgates opened with new ideas to improve machinery availability.

Pivotal to their success has been the formation of the ‘Quality Circle’; a team of 10 surface and underground crew representatives who have been meeting fortnightly since April to engineer solutions to machinery concerns.

Derek Skora, Reliability Technician GFM and founder of the Quality Circle says the new culture of asking ‘can we do this better?’ has resulted in 99 ideas being raised by crews, of which nine have been successfully rolled out and a further 17 are ready for or currently being trialled on our site.

“Ideas are like rabbits; you start slowly with a few and soon enough you end up with hundreds. It’s our job in the Quality Circle to work through the viable ones to bring the best return to the business,” Derek says.

“Often the ideas are very simple, cost very little to implement but save us thousands of dollars over the course of the year.”

Steve James, Diesel Fitter GFM Maintenance came up with one such simple, yet innovative idea to minimise the hours our underground loaders spend in the workshop.

In the past, underground loader operators used groundwater to fill the loaders’ windscreen wiper water

reservoirs when no filtered water alternative was available. This caused grit suspended in the groundwater to build up in the windscreen wiper spray pipes, eventually blocking the pipes completely.

As a result, the Maintenance team would spend an average of six hours per loader every month clearing grime lodged in the wiper system’s piping.

Steve’s idea, which is proving particularly successful, was to use condensate captured from the evaporation unit of the loader’s air-conditioning system to supply the windscreen wiper reservoir via a hose. The modification has since been rolled out to 25 underground loaders.

“This has resulted in 150 hours less production downtime every month, not to mention labour hours in making repairs. It’s an incredible contribution back to the business,” Derek says.

“We’ve got about eight ideas in trial right now and we’re not slowing down. The best ideas come from the crews and supervisors. They use the machinery, they know what the niggles are. It’s just a matter of raising your voice now.”

As the key decision-maker on places of cultural heritage significance to Queensland, the Queensland Heritage Council works to identify and protect places that have special cultural value to the community for future generations.

Barry Merrick is one of 12 members who represent a wide range of professional and community sector interests. Barry has been appointed to provide expert advice on protecting Queensland’s rich mining history.

Barry meets with the Heritage Council at least six times a year to review submissions and vote to decide what is entered and removed from the Queensland Heritage Register.

Barry says he’s been interested in heritage and local history for some time and it seemed appropriate for him to apply for a position on the council.

“I have represented the Queensland Resource Council on the Harmonised Legislation Workgroup so they were familiar with my passion for the resource industry,” Barry says.

“It was certainly an eye opener for me at the first couple of meetings and there is a huge amount of research and reading

relating to the submissions required, as well as changes requested to existing listings and of course more legislation for me to be familiar with.

“The Heritage Register is very diverse in spite of Queensland having a relatively short history from settlement. It is so important that we preserve our past so future generations can understand where we have come from.”

Barry’s appointment marks the first time a mining industry representative has sat on the council. Barry is also the first council representative from north west Queensland to be appointed.

He also represents the Minerals Council of Australia and Mount Isa Mines on three Australian Standards committees; the Queensland Resource Council on the National Mining Safety Framework Electrical Engineering Control Plans subcommittee; as well as being the Mount Isa Mines representative on the Mine Electrical Safety Association Queensland.

Barry recently published a book on the early mining history of Mount Isa Mines titled Discovery to Production: A Mining History of Mount Isa 1923 to 1931.

I am the Occupational Therapist at Ernest Henry Mining (EHM), so I am responsible for a variety of

different injury prevention initiatives, rehabilitation programs and return to work processes. The thing I like about my role is being able to play a part in promoting the health and well-being of the hundreds of people who work at EHM. Working towards more positive health outcomes for our people and the community is something that’s very important to me.

I began my occupational therapy career as a graduate at Mount Isa Mines. Once I completed the graduate program, I was offered an opportunity to work at EHM.

Living and working in such close knit communities like Mount Isa and Cloncurry made me realise the importance of organisations that improve the welfare of our towns. After seeing the invaluable contribution the North Queensland Helicopter Rescue Service (NQ Rescue) provides our region, I made a decision to get involved with their fundraising efforts.

KEEPING T HE NQ RESC U E CHOPPER FLY ING

This year, I entered the 2013 Mount Isa Rodeo Queen Quest to promote the amazing work of the NQ Rescue team. As a Queen Quest entrant, I was an ambassador for the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo while raising vital funds for NQ Rescue over a 10-month period.

The management team at EHM were very supportive of my involvement in the quest, particularly as supporting our local community is an important part of the way EHM operates.

EHM has a long standing relationship with NQ Rescue. We have a three-year partnership with NQ Rescue through our Glencore Community Program North Queensland, which helps ensure the service can continue to provide a full-time community rescue helicopter service, free of charge, to assist people in need of urgent care across the north west. As well as providing critical aerial-medical response services to the community, the helicopter provides emergency retrieval capabilities to our north Queensland operations when they’re needed.

The NQ Rescue helicopter costs about $3,500 every hour it’s operating. NQ Rescue relies on the generosity of businesses and communities to remain viable, so every dollar donated counts.

M Y FUNDR AISING JOU R NEY

I held 45 different Queen Quest fundraising events for the Mount Isa and Cloncurry communities, ranging from a Mother’s Day brunch to a ‘Wild, Wild West’ mechanical bull ride night. More than 3,000 people donated their own money to the cause and I raised a total of $28,889.

The money I raised through the Queen Quest can almost entirely cover the cost of all the fuel the helicopter consumed last year. I’m proud to have been able to contribute to keeping the NQ Rescue chopper in the air, and I’m so grateful to everyone who came along to my fundraising events and supported me throughout my Queen Quest journey.

Entering the Mount Isa Rodeo Queen Quest was not only a huge personal

commitment but also involved the help of my friends and numerous volunteers. It was challenging and stressful at times, but the experience has been hugely rewarding and I have been overwhelmed by the support and generous donations I received from the community. While I didn’t win the crown, I am so happy to have raised almost $30,000 for NQ Rescue and to promote one of our great local community health services.

T HE FAC TS• In Australia every year close to

3,300 men die of prostate cancer.

• Around 20,000 new prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in Australia every year.

• More Australian men die from prostate cancer than women die from breast cancer.

• Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in Australian men and the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men.

• Mortality rate from prostate cancer is higher in remote areas. For every 100 men who die from prostate cancer in metropolitan areas, 121 will die in regional and remote areas.

• Prostate cancer in its early stages may not have symptoms. Regular testing is the only way to diagnose prostate cancer early enough to treat it. Remember, fore-warned is fore-armed.

Mount Isa Mines, Mount Isa City Council and the North West Queensland Prostate

Cancer Group have come together to make prostate cancer testing available through the Kinetic Health Medical Centre.

Almost 3,300 men die of prostate cancer in Australia every year, which is more than the number of women who die annually from breast cancer. Around 20,000 new cases are diagnosed in Australia each year.

One in nine men in Australia will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime. The strongest risk factor for prostate cancer is age and the chance of developing the disease rises rapidly from age 50. In most cases, at the early and potentially curable stage prostate cancer does not have obvious symptoms.

If caught in its early stages while confined to the prostate gland, prostate cancer can be cured. Testing through a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test and Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) and subsequent prostate biopsy is currently the best available way to detect the presence of cancer.

Simple testing by your doctor can indicate prostate cancer and early detection is the key to better outcomes and potential cure. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia recommends men aged over 50, or over 40 if they have a family history of prostate cancer, talk to their doctor about prostate cancer testing as part of their annual health check-up.

It can be life threatening to wait for symptoms to appear before seeking assessment.

New helipad improves critical care outcomes in CloncurryEmergency patients can now receive hospital treatment faster following the construction of a helipad at the Cloncurry Hospital.

Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) provided in-kind support for the helipad by purchasing and installing a wind sock and lighting.

The project has been 12 months in the making with the helipad officially opened on Thursday 19 September.

Alex Dorr, Chief Executive Officer of North Queensland Helicopter Rescue Service (NQ Rescue) says this vital piece of infrastructure will help to improve emergency health services in our region.

“Having a helipad at a hospital saves a considerable amount of time during the transportation process as it puts the helicopter and the patient right at the hospital’s doorstep,” Alex says.

“Additionally, removing the need to transfer a patient from the rescue helicopter to an ambulance for transport to the hospital helps keep the patient more comfortable, providing better patient outcomes overall.”

The helipad was funded by NQ Rescue with the help of generous grants and donations from local businesses.

Students from Camooweal State School will soon have access to fresh ‘home grown’ vegetables for their Healthy Eating Program thanks to a new garden built

by Lady Loretta.

Lady Loretta and site caterers ESS volunteered their people, the vegetable seedlings and materials to build a raised garden bed, complete with a shade sail and seating in September, to give the school’s 27 students a learning project outside of the class room.

Produce from the garden will potentially be used to expand the school’s current breakfast Healthy Eating Program to include lunches with fresh tomatoes, lettuce, capsicum, zucchini and other vegetables from the garden on hand.

Stacey Train, Principal Camooweal State School says practical, hands on learning often returned the best results.

“Learning the biology of how food is produced and then harvested for healthy eating is going to be a real benefit for our students,” Stacey says.

“But there are other benefits too. We’ll be using the garden for outdoor maths lessons by measuring plant growth and spacing between plants and literacy by having students make class presentations and write articles for our newsletter.

“We also hope to send a few veggies home to parents if we have leftovers.”

Brett Creely, Facilities and Haulage Supervisor Lady Loretta says the idea came about after the Lady Loretta team visited the school in June to hand out books to students for the Glencore Community Program North Queensland Books in Homes program.

“We were wondering whether there were any other practical ways we could help. It’s a pretty small school with dedicated teachers so even the little gestures go a long way,” Brett says.

“For us, it was a chance to physically help out and get to know our community better too. It’s more meaningful that way.”

All going well, students will be picking and eating the veggies of their labour in a few months’ time.

IS&T updateEllipse V8 takes off! This August, three years’ of work culminated in the final ‘go live’ of Ellipse V8 across all Glencore’s north Queensland and Northern Territory sites.

The Ellipse V8 Upgrade Project has successfully established the technological basis to future-proof one of our most important information sources by moving off unsupported hardware and software and implementing the disaster recovery and business continuity infrastructure.

In 2010, the decision was made to undertake the massive upgrade project so our operations could make use of the improved usability, reliability and performance the latest Ellipse technology provides. The new system also reduces the number of customisations required and improves the quality of system data through a series of data cleansing activities.

Ellipse V8 not only has a brand new web-based front end, but a number of new applications. The project team have also introduced an employee and manager ‘self service’ function that will allow employees to view and update many of their personal details online.

For assistance with the transition, users can access the Ellipse V8 toolbox via our sites’ intranets. The toolbox provides access to a series of quick reference guides which will help you perform common Ellipse transactions.

There are also handy mappings of old-to-new program numbers to help you identify which transaction to use in the new system. A link to the learning management system is also available where you can access all the online and classroom learning materials as required.

Just click on the Ellipse Toolbox button on the Intranet and select the relevant item from the menu (pictured right).

We would like to thank our dedicated core project team and key users for the time and hard work they put in to get this project across the line. A special thanks to our Ellipse V8 project reference group and steering committee for the guidance and support they provided to the project team during the development and rollout.

Cloncurry Quilters Group will be kept busy fashioning 15 quilts for elderly residents of the Aged-Care Annex at Cloncurry Hospital, with materials purchased with funds provided through the Community Assistance Program. Each unique quilt will be handmade by the group and will act as a means of comfort to residents in care.

Cloncurry and District Race Club secured Community Assistance Program funding to support their 2013 and 2014 race meets. The meets are a favourite on Cloncurry’s social calendar, attracting approximately 600 race-goers at each gathering. The race meets are also an opportunity for the Cloncurry Race Club to give back to the community, with opportunities to raise funds through volunteer work provided to local organisations.

Glencore’s site-based Community Assistance Programs accept and award applications for sponsorships and donations on a quarterly basis with applications for Quarter 1, 2014 opening on 30 November.

Since August 2012, Ellen has raised more than $11,200 for charities including the Movember Foundation, Cancer Council, Relay for Life and the Leukaemia Foundation.

Ellen was driven to raise funds for vital cancer research and support programs when her father was diagnosed with terminal cancer in July last year.

“The thought first came to me when I found out my Dad had cancer last year. The cancer was aggressive and I couldn’t help but think of all the things my Dad was going to miss out on, like walking me down the aisle,” Ellen says.

“I wanted to make a difference. I knew there was nothing I could do to help my Dad get better so I wanted to support others who were sick, and those working so hard to find a cure.

“While I’m not raising millions, I am driven by the fact that one in two people are diagnosed with cancer and hopefully my contribution will play a part in one day saving somebody’s life,” she says.

Ellen has used her administration skills to turn individual fundraising ventures into ZOPs-wide events, such as last year’s Movember effort.

Team pride shines bright for cancerIn September Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO) threw their support behind their favourite football teams to raise funds for children with cancer.

Dressing up in their favourite team colours MICO raised over $230 for Footy Colours Day.

Fundraising champion recognised for community commitment

Turning personal loss into charitable gain has won Ellen Morris, Administration Assistant Zinc Open Pits (ZOPs), a Zinc Character award for her tireless efforts in raising funds for cancer support organisations.

“A highlight of the month was our Movember break up party held at the Red Earth. We sold raffle tickets, ran $100 boards and collected donations all night. It was a fantastic event that saw ZOPs raise more than $8,700 for the Movember foundation,” Ellen says.

Ellen has also raised around $2,000 by selling coffee pods and chocolate bars to her ZOPs colleagues.

As well as ongoing fundraising for the Leukaemia Foundation, Ellen also coordinated a barbeque for the ZOPs 2013 World’s Greatest Shave Event.

Ellen received the Zinc Character Award this July in recognition of the hours she has put in to coordinating ZOPs fundraising efforts.

Approved by Bryant Schwengler, General Manager Open Cut Mining Mount Isa Mines Zinc Assets, the Zinc Character Awards recognises employees or teams whose outstanding behaviours and achievements reflect our values and support our business objectives.

Congratulations Ellen!

The mining process: Open cut mining

Open cut mining is used when minerals are spread over a large area, relatively close to

the surface. Sometimes described by the uninitiated as ‘a really big hole in the ground’, an open cut mine is dug downwards in benches averaging 16 metres, sloping towards the centre of the pit. This type of mining requires close attention to geology, geotechnical planning and drill and blast technology.

BSOC is situated over the extensive underground workings of the old Isa Lead Mine, which was closed in 2003 after operating for almost 75 years. Mining over and through kilometres

OPER AT IONS

of underground development drives, multiple ore passes and stope voids, many of which are up to 100 metres deep, presents a unique challenge. As a result, BSOC’s Void Management team has developed new and innovative mining practices and tools over the years to embrace these challenges as mining progresses.

To make sure work can be carried out safely our Void Management team is responsible for locating, mapping, marking out, and designing safety zones around the old workings to ensure the stability of the pit walls and floor.

Once any voids are mapped, ore blocks on the bench are located by our geologists. Drill rigs then drill the blast

pattern set by our mining engineers. The drill holes are typically eight metres deep and 140 millimetres in diameter.

The drilled holes are charged with explosives and blasted. The blasted material is then scooped up by front end loaders, hydraulic excavators or face shovels, loaded onto haul trucks and transported to the crusher. Once crushed, the ore makes its way to the Zinc-Lead Concentrator for processing.

Once open cut mining ceases land rehabilitation will occur. Our Environment teams are currently conducting several rehabilitation trials to determine the most suitable vegetation to cover the waste rock dumps at Mount Isa Mines.

Members of the Mount Isa Mines Environment team collect samples from a local waterway

Environment team prepares for wet seasonAs the wet season approaches, you may notice the Mount Isa Mines Environment team spending more time in our local waterways with regular sampling from the Leichhardt River and its tributaries. These samples are taken to fulfil statutory obligations outlined our Environmental Authority (EA).

Mount Isa Mines routinely conducts three types of water testing, including groundwater monitoring, the Sediment Quality Monitoring Program (SQMP), and the Receiving Environmental Monitoring Plan (REMP) in addition to other sampling activities.

Groundwater monitoring aims to assess the condition and trend of groundwater quality. Samples are collected from 47 bore sites located across our lease and in the community. The monitoring requires the use of a pump to purge water from the bore with samples sent to a third party laboratory for analysis.

As featured in the last edition of Mine to Market, REMP sampling involves regular waterway monitoring to ensure our aquatic ecosystems remain healthy.

The SQMP tests stream sediment quality to determine the impact of stormwater releases from Mount Isa Mines on the sediment quality of the Leichhardt River and its tributaries.

Both REMP and SQMP sampling test the quality of surface water through characteristics like pH and dissolved oxygen levels as well as the presence or absence of macroinvertebrates.

All river and bore monitoring is performed in line with Mount Isa Mines’ EA. In Queensland an EA is a mandatory set of conditions which a company must abide by to undertake particular activities, in our case, mining.

The cathode stripping machine, which removes copper cathode from the motherplate once

the electrolysis refining process is complete, has long been a source of ongoing efficiency issues often resulting in extended maintenance downtime.

The machinery became problematic when the ‘drive dogs’ (the vertical structure that sits behind the cathode on the conveyor and acts as a guide to push the cathode along) became jammed or hit the structure of the traverse conveyor, causing damage that needed to be immediately repaired. These repairs were often expensive, time consuming, and posed a potential safety hazard to maintenance crews.

The Copper Refinery’s D Crew identified removing a section of the traverse conveyor and fabricating a deflection plate beneath the conveyor line would minimise any potential impact with the drive dogs. Modifications were also made to the traverse conveyor to eliminate contact between the shuttle conveyor and traverse beam, while

strengthening the section to ensure it could withstand constant pressure during stripping.

Since the modifications were completed in November 2012, there has been zero damage to drive dogs, the lower guides or shuttle conveyor chains. The subsequent decrease in downtime required for emergency maintenance and repair has seen significant cost savings, improved production rates and a safer work environment for our employees.

The success of the modifications to the cathode stripping machine demonstrates how valuable input from our employees can be in identifying ways to continuously improve the efficiency, productivity and safety of our business.

As a Glencore company we value smart ideas and foster an entrepreneurial spirit in our people. If you have an idea or innovation that may improve the productivity, efficiency or safety of your area, be sure to discuss it with your supervisor.

There was just as much excitement off the track with Kate Cusack, Mount Margaret Mining Administration Assistant taking out the ‘Classic Ladies’ title in the Fashions on the Field competition.

The Spring Racing in the Outback meet raised funds to support the 2014 Cloncurry Stockman’s Challenge and Campdraft.

The races were followed by the official opening of the Ernest Henry Memorial Art Show hosted by Cloncurry Arts Council.

Cloncurry events kick off spring in style

In September, Cloncurry bid an official farewell to the cooler months with Spring Racing in the Outback and the Ernest Henry Memorial Art Show, both proudly supported by the Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) Community Assistance Program.

The exhibition attracted more than 100 entries, with the 2013 Open Art Division won by Lyn Green for her work, ‘Swagman’.

Keith Golinski, judge and former winner of the Ernest Henry Memorial Art Show was impressed with the range and quality of entries.

“There were several standout pieces, but ‘Swagman’ captivated me,” Keith said.

“It is quite different to my personal style and I wouldn’t usually be drawn to a piece like that, but it kept pulling me back and each time I got more and more out of it.”

Glencore Community Program North Queensland partner Southern Gulf Catchments,

with the help of a group of eager volunteers, has planted 300 native trees along a section of the Leichhardt River as part of National Tree Day in July.

Around 50 volunteers got their hands dirty planting the trees along the Tharrapatha Way Cultural Walking Trail in Mount Isa’s Soldier’s Hill. The new saplings add to the established trees planted at the site as part of National Tree Day activities over the past three years.

As the trees mature, they will play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the river bank, with their root systems helping to minimise erosion. Revegetating this area will also help to support native animals and birds, combat salinity and provide a green corridor connecting the trail to existing bushland.

Mick Brady, Environmental Project Officer Southern Gulf Catchments says it was great to see so many

Are You OK?While it’s normal to feel sad, moody or down from time to time, some people experience these feelings intensely, for weeks, months or even years, and sometimes for no apparent reason.

One in five women and one in eight men will experience depression at some stage of their lives.

Depression is more than just a low mood; it’s a serious illness that can impact both physical and mental health. Depression can wear a person down, and after a while it can seem a long and overwhelming journey to get back to being ‘ok’.

A person suffering from depression may lose interest in work or doing things they normally enjoy. They may lack energy, have difficulty sleeping or sleep more than usual. Some people feel irritable or find it hard to concentrate. Ultimately,

depression makes coping from day-to-day more difficult.

When you’re feeling blue it can be difficult to know how to bring it up with family or friends. So how can you support someone grabbling with depression? You don’t have to be an expert, you just need to be able to listen to their concerns without judgment and take the time to follow up. By starting a conversation, you could change a person’s life.

Mental illness is a growing problem in Australia, but it’s important for people struggling with depression to remember they aren’t alone.
