MEAI

The mineral industry of India encompasses fossil fuels, metallic & non-metallic minerals, building materials and

allied natural products. In the process of extraction of the mineral wealth, the associated environment, including

the land use pattern, undergoes change. In the economic development of the country, mining is a core industry

which, if not managed well may contribute towards the pollution of environment and wastage of mineral

permanently.

Therefore, International conventions like Rio de Janeiro (1992), The Kyoto Protocol 1997, etc. have imposed

obligations and restrictions on the mineral industry globally to protect the interests of the society. The

environmental issues and the manner in which they can be resolved are influenced by many factors such as

technology to be adopted, statutes in vogue, socio-political compulsions, resistance from the native population,

etc. Therefore, the manner in which India regulates its minerals industry is rapidly changing.

In addition, the near surface rich mineral resources are likely to exhaust in the immediate future and hence the

mankind has to depend for its mineral requirements on low-grade minerals, deep-seated and (or) sea-bed deposits.

Days are probably not far away for men to meet their mineral requirements from other planets. Added to this, huge

investments in prospecting & mining, problems associated with land acquisition, procedures involved in obtaining

clearances from various Government agencies are resulting in delayed starting of the projects and hence escalation

in the cost.

When judicious balance is maintained between the various mining operations and its impact on society and

ecosystem by implementing appropriate environmental protection measures and accepting the corporate social

responsibility will go a long way in restoring the near pre-mining environment and sometimes improved

environment besides supporting the socio-economic growth of the country. This calls for a brain storming session to

deliberate on the various issues concerned.

In this background, Mining Engineers' Association of India, Tamilnadu Chapter is organising a National Symposium on

Socio-Mechanics of Mining – Present & Future as a part of Expo and Symposium – MINEFEST INDIA' 2014, to

provide a common platform for the Industry, Scientists, Technologists, Academicians, Regulatory Agencies, Law

makers, Executives from Government and Mining Industries and Representatives from Non-Governmental

Organizations, to deliberate and discuss on the different technological, geological, biotic, sociological and

economic and managerial dimensions of mining which are likely to have impact on the society. This would be an

appropriate platform for the interaction of reputed speakers from the mining and mineral industries. Further, it

would provide an avenue for mine owners and mine managers to understand and implement the critical elements in

the areas such asmine safety, mining operation, mineral beneficiation, which play a key role in the socio-

environmental set-up.

The Mining Engineers Association of India (MEAI), founded in the year 1957, is a premier Mining Organisation in India. The Association functions from its headquarters at Hyderabad through 25 Chapters located at various important mining centres of the country. The Association has over 4,500 members consisting of Mining Engineers, Geoscientists, Geo-Physicists, Metallurgists, Chemists, Engineers hailing from widely divergent streams, viz., Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Instrumentation, Computer Science, etc, from Government & Private Mining & Mineral Industries, Academicians, Researchers, Policy Makers, Law Enforcement Agencies, Government Departments/Undertakings, etc. One of the main objectives of the Association is to gather information on the latest technological advancements in mining and allied areas and disseminate the same amongst its members, other stake holders and industry, by organising National & International Seminars, Symposia, Workshops, Brainstorming Sessions, Technical paper-meetings, Discussions and Training Programmes at various levels, periodically, publishing a Technical Monthly Journal, Encouraging Talent by instituting Awards, etc. The Association has bilateral agreements for exchange of knowledge on the latest technological advancements with SME (USA), AusIMM (Australia) and SAIMM (South Africa).

Tamilnadu Chapter of MEAI was established in the year 1988. It has a membership base of more than 350. It is one of the dynamic Chapters of MEAI, actively involved in dissemination of knowledge through Seminars/Symposia/Colloquiums/Workshops, etc. and human resource development. As a part of its Silver Jubilee Celebrations, the Chapter is organising this National Expo & Symposium.
