An introduction

Our experience in the mining and tunnelling industryThe Swedish mines were the first field of activity for the Cavotec Group more than 30 years ago. There we carried out theelectrification of drilling rigs and other mining equipment such as, drilling jumbo’s, roof-bolting units, scaling machines, self-loadingtrains, stackers, reclaimers and trippers used in the stock yards.

During the last 15 years, a lot of development has taken place in tunnelling technology, especially in the use of full-facers andother sophisticated mining equipment for which Cavotec has developed a range of special tunnelling reels for the power supply ofthese machines. Over the years the Cavotec Group has supplied this equipment and a range of other types to many of the world’sleading tunnelling and hydro-electric contractors.

Cable Reels

Cavotec Specimas cablemanagement systems form the mostimportant range supplied by theCavotec Group for mining andtunnelling. Each unit is used in avariety of mining operationssupplying power, air and water tomobile drilling machinery.

Cavotec Specimas has established itsreputation in this market segmentby supplying systems that areinnovative, robust and compact withspecialised engineering staff toprovide support where needed. On these pages we show thesystems developed by CavotecSpecimas for use in mining andtunnelling.

In the harsh atmosphere of underground mining, rock-drilling is the heart of thewhole operation. It requires however a number of essential means and men toadvance at the tunnel-face. Of vital importance is the supply of compressed airand electricity. The Cavotec Group facilitates face-drilling by supplying bothcompressed air and electricity to moving equipment at work not only deepunderground but also in many surface mining applications.



One of the most common miningapplications for Cavotec equipment is

supplying power to tunnelling rigs for highcapacity tunnelling operations.

Due to its unique patented design, theCavotec Specimas hydrodynamic systemprovides a simple and rational solutionfor many cable and hose reelapplications. The system is based on atorque unit in which reduction gear,clutch and brake are built into oneclosed unit. Furthermore, thanks to theclutch acting directly on the main drumshaft, an even torque output isguaranteed. This allows an even recoveryof any type of cable independent ofclutch slip or reeling speed. The CavotecSpecimas hydrodynamic cable reel isdriven by a standard squirrel cage motorbut can also be supplied with a hydraulicor pneumatic motor. Another majoradvantage is that the torque can easilybe readjusted on site. This way, thetension of the cable may be reduced orincreased according to the actualrequirements.

Power Connectors

The Cavotec Power Connectors,manufactured in Sweden, have beenpresent in the field of industrialpower supply for more than 20 yearsstarting in the harsh environment ofthe Scandinavian mines and hydro-electric tunnels.

The high quality, robustness andintegral safety of the CavotecConnectors have set the standardconcerning high and low voltagepower supply to many differenttypes of equipment used in miningand tunnelling. Two families ofCavotec power connectors are usedin mines and tunnels: Low voltageconnectors up to 1100 V and Highvoltage connectors up to 25000 V.

In open pit mines, such as shown above, where electricity is to be distributedto applications at varying distances from the main source, the role of powerconnectors is very important. They must allow for fast connecting anddisconnecting and withstand extreme ambient influences such as dust, waterand frost. As Cavotec Power Connectors are made using only high-gradebronze and stainless steel, they are fully up to the task of supplying power inmining applications above or under the ground.



Heavy-duty power connectors are oftenused for supplying high voltage power to

applications such full-face drilling machinesand other large tunnelling equipment.

Cavotec Connectors for low and highvoltage applications are robustlydesigned, with a standard IP 66protection and a standard maximumtemperature of 80°C. The range of lowvoltage power connectors, available in avariety of sizes, are made in twodifferent operation systems:

1. The "Push & Pull" system is preferredwhen the connectors have to bedisconnected manually orautomatically several times a day.

2. The "Screw Ring" system has specialconnectors fitted with screw rings forapplications with manualdisconnections on a day-to-day orweekly basis.

Cavotec power connectors provide aflexible, convenient and reliable meansof extending cables from fixed ormobile power sources to mining andtunnelling equipment. They are oftenused also for portable junction boxeseither in above or undergroundapplications. In order to help to reducethe number and the frequency oftemporary splices made in trailingcables, Cavotec offers a range ofspecially designed “trailing cableconnectors”. The high quality,robustness and integral safety of theCavotec Connectors have set thestandard concerning high and lowvoltage power supply to many differenttypes of equipment used in applicationsaround the world.

In order to supply a comprehensiveselection of high quality cablesspecially adapted to the harshworking environment in mines andtunnels, the Cavotec Group decidedto select specialised manufacturingpartners enabling Cavotec toguarantee the very highest level ofproductivity and safety.

All the cables offered by the CavotecGroup are divided in low and mediumvoltage. Low voltage cables are furtherdivided into power or control cables aseach single cable is designed to dealwith specific applications. Mediumvoltage cables, on the other hand, are allpower cables but the majority can besupplied with integrated fibre-optics asan option. The selection of cables is suchthat Cavotec can supply any type ofcable for specific application in eitherunderground or open-pit miningapplications.

In addition, the Cavotec Group alsosupplies different types of hoses for thesupply of water and air. These hoses areoften used in mining and tunnellingoperations where providing sufficientclean air and water is an absolutenecessity.

the most extreme workingconditions.



Radio Remote Controls

Cavotec Micro-control, a fullmember of the Cavotec Group since2004, has been involved since 1984in the development and productionof advanced radio remote controlsystems, including the latest unitfor use in areas where explosionscould occur.

All systems have a high level offlexibility and are made fromstandard modules allowing for fullcustomisation to meet specificcustomer requirements. CavotecMicro-control radio remote controlsystems meet the most stringentsafety and quality controls and arefully ATEX and IEC approved.

The MC 3000Eex provides a secure andflexible control of many different typesof machinery in complete safety.Everything, from simple control functionsto complete process supervision, can bedone from the same system. This unitcan solve most of the direct hydraulicand electric control functions andprovide serial communication with mostknown PLC and frequency converters, ifnecessary using the TCP/IP protocol. Inaddition, this unit has the option of

cable control besides the standard radiocontrol, providing an extra failsafeagainst shutdown. All units can bedelivered with simplex or duplexcommunication.

The base unit can be delivered with aserial interface for the most commonbus standards on the market today. The base unit comes standard with EExprotection and with an intrinsicallysafe battery.

The MC 3000EEx is the firstever explosion proof RRC

to obtain a full ATEX approval.



Spring Driven Cable Reels

Established in 1991 to manufacturespring driven reels and slipringcolumns, Cavotec Alfo in just fiveyears, became a leadingmanufacturer in its sector andmarket-leader in Germany.

Such a fast growth is the result ofcombining high quality components,cost-effective management and theuse of standard materials producedin large numbers. This effectivecombination enables Cavotec Alfo toserve the market and meet bothstandard and special requirements atcompetitive prices and with shortdelivery times.

The Cavotec Alfo standard spring reelsare built from modular componentswhich allow a great number ofcombinations covering most commonrequirements. The clever design of theCavotec Alfo spring driven cable reelsguarantees the highest reliability even inthe most difficult and demandingapplications. Each unit features a welldimensioned shaft and bearings whichaccommodates an easy and fastexchange of springs. The cable feedingpoint can be placed on either side of thedrum allowing for easy adaptation forhorizontal or vertical applications.

The springs are made from high-gradespecial steel and are mounted inside ahousing in order to avoid friction andwear. The slipring assembly is mountedin a solid glass-fibre reinforced plastichousing which withstands corrosion andmechanical wear.

Every unit meets all applicable IEC normsand standards and follows the latest EUrequirements (CE-marking). All reels andsliprings have a protection grade ofIP65/66.
