As so much in medical technology, the origins of MISwere military in nature. But already in the early1980s, the original company became a specialist pro-ducer of orthopaedic prostheses. An affiliate taskedwith developing and producing dental implants wasfounded in 1987. In 1995, this affiliate became theindependent enterprise MIS Implants TechnologiesLtd, which that very same year began marketingimplants with sandblasted surfaces. Two years later, close research and development links were forgedwith the universities of Tel Aviv and Jerusalem andthe Rambam Medical Center. The result of this coop-eration was the Trio concept: three different implantssharing the same line of prosthetic componentsusing internal and external hex connectors. In 2003, additional cooperative scientific and
research agreements were signed with leading uni-versities in Europe and the US. That same year wit-nessed the introduction of a completely novel sur-face treatment to provide micro-rough and macro-rough surfaces with decisive benefits in terms ofbone apposition and osseointegration. When theSeven implant was introduced in 2004, causing asensation in the world of dentistry, this innovationhad been preceded by many years of in-in vitro andin-vivo testing along with an international multicen-tre study covering 1500 implants placed and followedfor a protracted period. This if nothing else finallysecured MIS Implants its place among leading inter-
national medical companies engaging in researchand development. In 2005, the Dental Implant Training Center (DITC)
opened its gates in the US, offering a broad range oftraining and continuing education courses, frombeginner training all the way to specialized expertworkshops. To accommodate ever more demandingtreatment suppliers and evermore sophisticated pro-cedures in the vestibular region, MIS in 2006 present-ed Mistral, a single-piece implant. That same year, the company joined forces with internationallyrenowned AB Surgery to open the Centre Européenned’Implantologie Dentaire (CEID). One year later, anumber of training centres were also founded inLatin America under the name of Esparza.Having presented its own line of biomaterials for
bone and soft-tissue augmentation in 2005, MIS pro-ceeded to supplement the line by a novel collagenmembrane, 4BONE-RCM, in 2008. MIS considers bio-materials a broad and challenging field in terms ofresearch and development in the near and more dis-tant future. At this point, MIS is represented in more than
60 countries all over the world. The move to newpremises with an area of more than 30,000 squaremeters, of which 10,000 are dedicated to productionfacilities, was just one additional milestone in thehistory of one of the most successful companies inoral implantology. STE

MIS moves to new premises
Then and NowA short look at the two buildings of MIS – then and now – illustrates the company’s incredibly dynamic
development since its foundation in 1995. On the occasion of a trip to Israel in November, EDI Journal
learned a lot about the history of MIS and its tight integration with academic research.
