Open Season Last weekend, Indiana State and South Dakota State played the first conference game of 2009. And four league games are on the slate this weekend. Southern Illinois, which hosts North Dakota State, has won seven-straight Missouri Valley Football open-ers. UNI (17) has won the most league-open-ing games. Wrapping It Up, Almost Only three regular-season non-conference games remain. After a 6-1 slate Sept. 19, the Missouri Valley Football Conference has combined for an 11-13 non-conference record, but that includes eight games at FBS sites. The league is an impressive 10-4 against teams from the FCS. In 2008, the MVFC had an 11-8 record at home against non-conference teams while posting just a 3-12 mark away from home. The MVFC is 9-3 in home non-league games this year.

YSU Looks To Continue Streak Youngstown State plays at Indiana State on Saturday. YSU has won 12-straight in the series against Indiana State and has won 17 of the 18 all-time meetings between the programs. RB Cliffton Gordon, Illinois StateSo., 6-0, 210, Chicago Heights (Ill.)Marian Catholic High Gordon rushed for 96 yards on 17 car-ries and had four rushing TDs, all of which were career highs. His four rushing TDs were the most by an ISU back since 2005 and also tied the Hancock Stadium record. Gordon had entered the game with 11 total yards on eight carries for the season.

Defense

DE Waylon Richardet, Missouri StateJr., 6-1, 269, Perryville (Mo.) St. Vincent’s HS Richardet was everywhere for the Bears in Saturday’s win over Murray State. He recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown, was in on two sacks, and recorded 2.5 tackles for loss. He ran two plays at fullback and also was an integral part of the MSU kickoff return game as the Bears averaged 39.0 yards per return. The Bears’ held a second straight opponent under 20 points for the first time since the 2006 season.

Special TeamsRS/WR Todd Speight, Western IllinoisJr., 5-8, 165, Bradenton (Fla.) Southeast Speight became just the third player in league history to record two TD returns in the same game as he had a punt return and kickoff return for touchdowns against Stephen F. Austin. It marks the first time in school history that a player had re-turned one of each for a score. Speight’s 88-yard punt return for a touchdown was the fourth-longest in league history, and the second-longest punt return in school history and the longest since 2003.

Offensive LinemanC Bryan Boemer, Southern Illinois6-2, 305, So., St. Louis (Mo.) Vianney HS Boemer, making just his second career start, helped the Saluki offense rack up the second-highest offensive output in school history. SIU finished with 699 yards of total offense, with 435 of that coming on the ground and the rushing attacked produced five rushing touchdowns. Boe-mer and the Saluki offensive line allowed the running game to average 8.1 yards per carry and helped running back Deji Karim set a new school record for the most yards per carry.

What’s the Rush? RB Deji Karim set a Southern Illinois record for the most rushing yards per carry, averaging 21.0 yards on 10 carries for 210 yards against Southwest Baptist. Karim led the Dawgs with 290 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns. And His 61-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter was the longest run of his career. It’s the first 200-yard rushing game of the season in the league and marks the 93rd time a back has rushed for more than 200 yards in a game.

12 Pre-Season All-Americans Southern Illinois reeled in four of the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s 12 selections to The Sports Network pre-season All-America Team. Southern Illinois leads the league with four selections, while SIU LB Brandin Jordan is the Salukis’ representative on the first team. UNI also grabbed three selections, with center Austin Steichen on the first team. Youngstown State’s Mychal Savage is the league’s other first-team pick.

Cliff’s Notes Sophomore RB Cliffton Gordon ran for the first touchdown of his career in the Redbirds 38-7 win over Austin Peay on Saturday, but he didn’t stop there. Gor-don added three more scores to tie the Hancock Stadium record with four total rushing TDs. Gordon rushed for 96 yards on 17 carries, both career highs.

Takeaway Artists The interception drought in Normal, Ill., seems to be over. Illinois State picked off four passes in Saturday’s 38-7 win over Austin Peay. The single game total surpassed the entire 2008 season mark, when the Redbirds intercepted just three passes. ISU has six picks through three games, led by E.J. Jones’ three intercep-tions. The three picks are the first of the junior cornerback’s career.

Spreading the Red QB Matt Brown, who took over for injured starter Drew Kiel, completed passes to nine different receivers in Illinois State’s 38-7 win over Austin Peay. Brown was also able to distribute the ball to nine different receivers at Illinois dur-ing the previous week (Sept. 12). Illinois State’s new spread offense has contrib-uted to that, as the Redbirds completed passes to seven different receivers at Eastern Illinois (Sept. 3).

For Openers Indiana State dropped its league opener at South Dakota State. It marked the fifth consecutive loss for the Sycamores in a league opener and gave ISU a 1-10 mark all-time in MVFC openers on the road. The Sycamores last won a MVFC opener on the road in 1996 at Western Illinois. An ISU First The Sycamores were shut out for the second consecutive week when ISU fell 41-0 at South Dakota State after drop-ping a 31-0 decision in the previous game to Eastern Illinois. It marked the first time that Indiana State has been shutout in consecutive weeks since 1999. ISU’s 95 yards of total offense against the Panthers coupled with its 90 yards of offense against the Jack-rabbits is the first time the Sycamores have failed to reach the 100 yards of to-tal offense mark in consecutive games in the history of the program. McCleskey Leads Defense The ISU defense continues to shine led by senior DB Donye McCleskey, who had a season-best 15 tackles against South Dakota State, including one for a loss. McCleskey also recorded his third career interception. Sophomore CJ Cook was impressive as well in his return from injury, as he posted 12 total tackles and a pair of pass breakups at SDSU. Of the 10 ISU defenders who posted multiple tackles against SDSU, seven are sophomore or younger.

Run Reversal After giving up 301.2 yards per game on the ground in 2008, Missouri State has dramatically improved this season in its ground defense. Through three games, the Bears have allowed just 99.3 yards per game and 3.1 yards per carry. Ten Is Enough Cody Kirby had his first 200-yard passing game in four tries in Saturday’s win over Murray State. His 17 comple-tions in the game went to 10 different receivers, and his three TD passes were his most since Oct. 4, 2008. Moving On Up Cody Kirby also moved up Missouri State’s career passing list this week. His 223 passing yards pushed him over the 4,000-yard mark for his career, making him just the fourth Bear to achieve that milestone. He now stands at 4,189 yards which is No. 3 all-time at MSU, surpassing Valley Football Player of the Decade DeAndre Smith this week. His ninth career 200-yard pass-ing game ties him for second all-time in that category.

Forcing Turnovers NDSU forced four first half fumbles in-cluding one recovered by true freshman linebacker Brandon Jemison, who was making his first collegiate start. Sopho-more linebacker Preston Evans (Sioux Falls, S.D.) led the Bison defense with 10 tackles, while sophomore defensive end Coulter Boyer (Hurley, S.D.) had 1.5 sacks, and redshirt freshman Isaac Kolstad (Mankato, Minn.) recorded his first collegiate interception.

Home Sweet Home The 59 points are the most scored by NDSU since 2006 when the Bison defeated Concordia-St. Paul 66-7 in the season opener. The Bison have now won 11 straight home-openers, dat-ing back to 1998 when Emporia State defeated NDSU 23-21.

Quick Strikes Wagner held a 38:18 to 21:42 edge in time of possession as the Bison scored three TDs in less than a minute and six touchdowns in less than 1:45.

Bohl-ing Them Over NDSU avoided its first 0-3 start since 1962. The Bison started 0-2 for the first time since 1981. It was the 50th career win for head coach Craig Bohl, who has compiled a 50-19 record. Bohl is in his seventh season at NDSU.

Billy Boots ‘Em Junior placekicker Billy Hallgren tied a career high with three made field goals in UNI’s 30-0 win over St. Francis. Hallgren drilled three-pointers from 40, 27 and 31 yards in the triumph. Hallgren leads the team in scoring through three games with 33 points. He has made 7-of-10 field goals and all 12 extra points he has attempted.

Hord Finds the Zone Twice Senior wide receiver D.J. Hord found the endzone twice in UNI’s 30-0 victory over St. Francis. Hord hauled in touch-down passes of 2 yards and 57 yards from senior quarterback Pat Grace. Hord leads the squad this season with three touchdown receptions. Hord, a transfer from Notre Dame, caught 15 passes for 149 yards in 2008 but did not find the endzone.

Stingy Defense The Panther defense has been downright stingy through three games. UNI has limited the opposition to only 8.0 points per game and held opposing offenses to 256.0 yards per contest. Through three games, UNI has allowed only three touchdowns and has a streak of seven straight scoreless quarters heading into Saturday’s game at Mis-souri State.

Success in the MVFC SDSU improved to 2-0 all-time against Indiana State and 7-2 in Missouri Valley Football Conference play since joining the league in 2008. The Jackrabbits have won their two MVFC openers by a combined score of 81-7, defeating Youngstown State, 40-7, last season

Strong Defense SDSU has allowed 36 net yards rushing in its two games this season and has not allowed an opponent into the red zone. Defensively, SDSU limit-ed Indiana State to five first downs for the entire game. The Jackrabbits did not allow a first down by rushing, tying a school record set against Hamline (Minn.) in 1975. The Jackrabbits lead the FCS in rushing defense and scor-ing defense, and rank No. 2 in the FCS in pass efficiency defense and total defense.

Pitching a Shutout South Dakota State shut out Indi-ana State, 41-0 last week, and the Jackrabbits’ last shutout was a 45-0 home victory over Stephen F. Austin. Notably, the Jackrabbits improved to 24-19 in Beef Bowl games, winning for the fourth consecutive year and ninth time in 11 tries.

Totally Offensive SIU’s 699 yards of total offense against Southwest Baptist was the second most in school history and the sixth most in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Of SIU’s eight TDs against Southwest Baptist, four of them went for 39 yards or more.

Record-Breaker Senior running back Deji Karim beat the old school record by nearly seven yards for the most yards per carry by a back with at least 10 attempts (21.0 on 10 rushing at-tempts). Karim’s 210 yards rushing beat his old personal best by 109 yards and it was his third multi-touch-down game.

Pin-Point Accuracy Quarterback Chris Dieker’s 82.4 completion percentage (14-of-17) against SBU is the fifth highest in program history.

Pickin’ and Grinnin’ Korey Lindsey intercepted two passes in the game against South-west Baptist and finished with five tackles. Lindsey’s two picks give him 10 for his career, which is tied for the seventh most in school history.

Rare Home-Opening Loss Under head coach Don Patterson, Western Illinois holds a perfect 9-1 record for home-opening games. Last season’s home opener resulted in a 63-0 shutout over Quincy with Mark Hendrickson in place as acting head coach. Prior to last Saturday, the last time the Leathernecks dropped the home-opening game was in the 1993 season when Montana State took a 29-16 victory from Western, under then-head coach Randy Ball.

Patterson Two Wins Away In his 11th season at Western Il-linois, head coach Don Patterson (63-47) is two wins shy of becoming the schools’ all-time winningest coach. Former head coach Randy Ball (1990-98) currently holds the position with a 64-41-1 record.

Speight Sets Record Western Illinois’ Todd Speight became just the third player in league history to record two TD returns in the same game as he had a punt return and kickoff return for touchdowns against Stephen F. Austin. It marks the first time in school history that a player had returned one of each for a score. Speight accounted for 312 yards of total offense -- 13th-best all-time in league history.

History in League Openers YSU is 9-3 all-time in MVFC open-ers since joining the conference in 1997. Of those 12 games, seven have come on the road. YSU is 4-3 in those games. This is the third time the Guins have opened a league slate versus Indiana State (1997 and 1998 - the first two).

Summers Scoots for 3 TDs QB Brandon Summers became the first YSU quarterback since Ray Isaac in 1990 to have three rushing scores in the same game. Last Saturday at Northeastern, Summers had two one-yard scoring runs and a career-long 73 yard jaunt in the fourth quarter. Isaac had three rushing scores on Nov. 17, 1990, against Maine. He had scoring runs of seven, nine and 11 yards versus the Black Bears. Isaac also passed for a touchdown like Summers did versus the Huskies.

Seen This Score Before YSU has won its past two games by an identical score of 38-21. It is the first time in school history that YSU won consecutive games by the same exact score. Ironically, YSU trailed 7-0 before the defense took the field in both games. The second half was the difference in both games. YSU out-scored APSU 21-7 and Northeastern 24-7. In both games, YSU led 17-14 and 24-14 at some point.
