Registration Procedures and Guidelines

Membership Eligibility

The Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER) invites you to explore the opportunities available through involvement with MIT Recreational Sports. Through the offering of diverse programs and services DAPER encourages

community by promoting the dynamic connection between mind and body. With over 200 programs, services and events throughout the year, there is something for everyone.

Online Registration available online. Visit mitrecsports.com/member-services for more information and details. Types of payment accepted: Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover. Walk-InPlease visit the Main Desk in the Zesiger Center or Alumni/Wang Center to sign up in person for programs and classes. Types of payment accepted: cash, check, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover.

Access ProceduresMembers: Please show appropriate photo ID and swipe your DAPER membership card or turn in a valid day pass to access facilities. Must be 18 or with an adult. Guests: Guests/ Non-members must purchase a day pass to use the facilities unless registered for a program at a listed non-member rate. Please present a photo ID in order to obtain a temporary pass; the photo ID will be returned when the temporary pass is returned. Be sure to hold onto your pass—a $15 fee applies to lost passes and passes that are not returned before closing. Students may obtain day passes at a discounted rate with a valid student ID.

Prior experience is not required. Lessons are open to all ages beginning at 3 years old through adults. Adult skates are avail-able for rent. Y outh must bring skates.

Squash Instruction P riv ate and P artnerD esigned to introduce the game and teach rules to beginners or to help an intermediate or advanced player improve his or her game and fitness level. essons focus on fitness, squash strategies, game condition, drills and match preparation. Participants must provide their own squash racquet.

Party Packages Recreational Sports offers two party rental packages: Activ ity only P ack age -1 hour of activity timeActiv ity plus party room P ack age -1 hour of activity time followed by 1 hour of party room use for gifts and/ or food. O ptions include a Pool Party, Game M ania, Sports Adventure, D ance Party, and Ice Skating. Party packages must be reserved at least two weeks in advance. M embers and N on-M embers are welcome.

Indoor Golf Instruction P riv ate, P artner, and Semi-P riv ateWhether you’ re a true beginner or an experienced player looking to work out the kinks in your game, let our golf instructor help you lower your handicap, develop your short game or extend your tee-shot. Private, partner, and small group lessons and packages are available. V ideo stroke analysis is available.

Rudovsky Indoor Golf Range UseThe driving range is available for individual use and operates on a pass system. E ach visit is 30 or 50 minutes and unlimited balls are provided. Passes may be purchased at the Z esiger or Alumni/ Wang M ain D esk. Reservations can be made up to two days in advance.

Parent-Child AquaticsThe parent/guardian accompanies the child in the water for the class. These courses build basic water safety skills for both parents and children, helping infants and young children ages 6 months to about 3 years become comfortable in the water so they are willing and ready to learn to swim. These basic skills include adjusting to the water environment, showing comfort while maintaining a front or back position in the water and demonstrating breath control.

Classes include:Parent-Infant (ages 6-18 months)Parent-Toddler (ages 18-36 months)

Preschool AquaticsThis class begins the child’s on-your-own experiences in the water and is the first class without the parent in the water. Because of this, class sizes are kept small at 4 students. Students will learn basic swimming readiness such as bubble blowing, floating on back with assistance, and underwater exploration. This class is taught on a tot-dock so that the students are able to stand comfortably. Three levels of the preschool aquatics are available to chose from:

Classes include:Beginning Beavers (ages 3-5)Intermediate Beavers (ages 3-5)Advanced Beavers (ages 4-5)

American Red Cross Learn to Swim Levels 1 – 5 (ages 5+)MIT Recreational Sports offers Levels 1 – 5 of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. The courses are based on a logical progression that helps swimmers of all ages and varying abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. The pre-requisite for each level is the successful demonstration of the skills from the previous level (except for Level 1 in which individuals need to be at least 5 years old).

Classes include:Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic SkillsLevel 3: Stroke DevelopmentLevel 4: Stroke ImprovementLevel 5: Stroke Refinement

Private Swim LessonsLearn to swim or improve your stroke development with the convenience of one-on-one instruction.

Buddy Swim LessonsBuddy swim lessons offer the flexibility of private lessons and allow you to work with a friend. Each participant should have similar skills and goals.

Semi-Private Swim LessonsFind 2–5 friends with the same swimming goals and skill level and create your own private class. Each participant must purchase a package of lessons.

Youth/Family Swim LessonsMIT Recreational Sports is an Authorized Provider of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Instructors are certified by the American Red Cross to instruct swimming and water safety. The courses offer a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate swim program that teaches your child and you how to swim skillfully and safely. Registration can be completed online and more detailed course descriptions are available on the website. Ages listed are guidelines, please contact [email protected] if you need assistance in determining the appropriate level.

Private and Semi-Private Swim lessons: Adult and YouthRegistration for private lessons is done in person at either the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center or the Alumni Wang Fitness Center. After registering, an aquatics staff member will contact you by phone or e-mail to obtain your availability and goals. Once this information has been obtained, the staff will begin the process of

Pre-Natal Swim CourseThis course supports women interested in enhancing their delivery and recovery by preparing the body through regular, low-intensity exercise. The class will also provide a comfortable social and educational environment for the mother-to-be.

Introduction to Swimming BasicsThis course is designed for the true beginner. Instructors along with small class sizes (max 5) will provide support, guidance, and patience to help you truly enjoy the water. The focus will be on floating, treading, changing body position and comfort in and around the water. Pre-requisite: Willing to stand in 4 feet of water.

Beginning Swim This course offers instruction in basic swimming skills for beginners. Learn or

improve on your crawl stroke, elementary backstroke, backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke. Pre-requisite: Comfortable getting face wet, floating on front and being in shallow water.

Intermediate SwimDo you understand swimming basics but need help putting it all together? Improve your front crawl, backstroke and learn breathing techniques, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Pre-requisites: Comfortable with front crawl and backstroke.

Stroke TechniqueThis program is designed for the more advanced adult swimmer who wants to learn the fundamentals of lap swimming and improve stroke technique. Pre-requisite: Knowledge of front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke, be able to swim 100 yards continuously, and be comfortable swimming in the 50 meter pool.

Efficient FreestyleThis course will break down the coordination, flexibility, timing, and power of the freestyle stroke to help swimmers learn good form and increase overall efficiency. Drills that teach proper posture, line, and balance will be used to create the desired fluid motion when moving through the water. Pre-requisite: Able to swim 100 yards of freestyle continuously.

Pre-Masters: Introduction to Swim WorkoutsThis program is for the adult swimmer who wishes to build swimming endurance. Improve stroke technique and endurance for your personal lap swimming or in preparation for the Masters Swim Program. Pre-requisite: Knowledge of front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and be able to swim 500 yards continuously.

Adult Instructional Classes

American Red Cross (ARC) ClassesMIT Recreational Sports is an Authorized Provider of American Red Cross certification courses.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Learn the skills professional rescuers use to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies. This class includes instruction in rescue breathing, obstructed airway, CPR for adults, children and infants, two-person CPR, bag-valve-mask, and AED.

Water Safety InstructorThe purpose of this course is to train instructor candidates to teach water safety courses, including the Basic Water Rescue course, six levels of Learn to Swim, and Parent and Child Aquatics Classes. Pre-requisite: Minimum age of 16 by end of course.

Lifeguard TrainingThe lifeguard training course will train participants in lifeguard skills and knowledge to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Pre-requisites: Minimum age of 15 by end of course. Swim 300 yards, tread water, and retrieve a 10 pound dive brick from a depth of 8 feet. Refunds will not be given to those who fail the pre-requisites.

First AidLearn the skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses. This course does not include information on breathing or cardiac emergencies.

Lifeguard Training Review / CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer ReviewThese courses allow those who are currently certified, or recently expired (within 12 months) in Lifeguard Training or CPR/AED – Pro to renew their certification. Proof of Certification required at first class. Participants need to bring a pocket mask and current book.

KickboxingA cardiovascular workout that uses punches, kicks, and blocks to increase your heart rate. Works on improving endurance, strength, and coordination.

PilatesStrengthen those very important core muscles while improving flexibility and agility.

DanceCardio made fun with one of the easy to follow dance classes. Two left feet accepted.

CyclingSimulate hills, climbs and sprints all while riding indoors. Any of our cycling classes will give you a great cardiovascular workout.

Strength TrainingGet a full body strength training workout in 1 hour in these fun group classes.

StepSimple choreographed routines using a mixture of high and low impact on an adjustable step platform. A great cardio workout CardioThis class uses creative choreography to get your heart pumping and offers a total body workout.

Water AerobicsThese classes are a great low impact way to tone up and burn calories.

Group Exercise With over 35 classes offered per week, our group exercise schedule has something for everybody. Purchase a quarter or semester pass and you have access to all group exercise classes on the schedule. Classes vary each semester, visit mitrecsports.com for up to date schedules and descriptions. Trial passes are available.

Adult Instruction These classes are geared towards exercise as well as learning a new skill. Courses usually run 5 to 6 weeks and are progressive in nature.

Personal Training, Orientations and Assessments

Tri-FitnessRun, Bike and Swim! Whether you want to train to complete a sprint triathlon or just want a great cross-training weekly workout, this class is for you..

Running ClassesThese classes will help you train for a 5K, half marathon or recreational running by teaching you fundamentals of stretching, tempo runs, a gate analysis, and race preparation.

Learn MassageLearn the fundamentals of massage and more importantly, the techniques to give a great one.

ZumbaCombines high energy music with unique moves making for a “feel-happy” workout that is great for both the body and the mind.

CapoeriaA Brazilian art form incorporating dance, martial arts, and acrobatics.

Group SquashIntroductory, intermediate and advanced classes available. Learn the fundamentals of basic techniques, introduction to game play and progress through to advanced drilling and player strategy.

Personal TrainingA certified personal trainer will motivate and train you to meet or exceed your fitness goals. Achieve results, avoid injuries and lead a healthier lifestyle. Private, Buddy, Group and Teen Personal Training are available.

Fitness OrientationFREE by appointment, learn fitness floor etiquette, policies, proc edures and introduction to cardio and strength machines.

Hand-Weight IntroductionLearn how to use free weights to best meet your fitness goals.

Fitness AssessmentA comprehensive evaluation session that includes assessments for cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance, body composition, flexibility and provides a benchmark for progress.

Intermediate SwimDo you understand swimming basics but need help putting it all together? Improve your front crawl, backstroke and learn breathing techniques, breaststroke, and sidestroke. Pre-requisites: Comfortable with front crawl and backstroke.

Stroke TechniqueThis program is designed for the more advanced adult swimmer who wants to learn the fundamentals of lap swimming and improve stroke technique. Pre-requisite: Knowledge of front crawl, backstroke, and breaststroke, be able to swim 100 yards continuously, and be comfortable swimming in the 50 meter pool.

Efficient FreestyleThis course will break down the coordination, flexibility, timing, and power of the freestyle stroke to help swimmers learn good form and increase overall efficiency. Drills that teach proper posture, line, and balance will be used to create the desired fluid motion when moving through the water. Pre-requisite: Able to swim 100 yards of freestyle continuously.

Pre-Masters: Introduction to Swim WorkoutsThis program is for the adult swimmer who wishes to build swimming endurance. Improve stroke technique and endurance for your personal lap swimming or in preparation for the Masters Swim Program. Pre-requisite: Knowledge of front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke and be able to swim 500 yards continuously.

American Red Cross (ARC) ClassesMIT Recreational Sports is an Authorized Provider of American Red Cross certification courses.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Learn the skills professional rescuers use to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies. This class includes instruction in rescue breathing, obstructed airway, CPR for adults, children and infants, two-person CPR, bag-valve-mask, and AED.

Water Safety InstructorThe purpose of this course is to train instructor candidates to teach water safety courses, including the Basic Water Rescue course, six levels of Learn to Swim, and Parent and Child Aquatics Classes. Pre-requisite: Minimum age of 16 by end of course.

Lifeguard TrainingThe lifeguard training course will train participants in lifeguard skills and knowledge to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Pre-requisites: Minimum age of 15 by end of course. Swim 300 yards, tread water, and retrieve a 10 pound dive brick from a depth of 8 feet. Refunds will not be given to those who fail the pre-requisites.

First AidLearn the skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses. This course does not include information on breathing or cardiac emergencies.

Lifeguard Training Review / CPR & AED for the Professional Rescuer ReviewThese courses allow those who are currently certified, or recently expired (within 12 months) in Lifeguard Training or CPR/AED – Pro to renew their certification. Parent-Child AquaticsThe parent/guardian accompanies the child in the water for the class. These courses build basic water safety skills for both parents and children, helping infants and young children ages 6 months to about 3 years become comfortable in the water so they are willing and ready to learn to swim. These basic skills include adjusting to the water environment, showing comfort while maintaining a front or back position in the water and demonstrating breath control.

Classes include:Parent-Infant (ages 6-18 months)Parent-Toddler (ages 18-36 months)

Preschool AquaticsThis class begins the child’s on-your-own experiences in the water and is the first class without the parent in the water. Because of this, class sizes are kept small at 4 students. Students will learn basic swimming readiness such as bubble blowing, floating on back with assistance, and underwater exploration. This class is taught on a tot-dock so that the students are able to stand comfortably. Three levels of the preschool aquatics are available to chose from:

American Red Cross Learn to Swim Levels 1 – 5 (ages 5+)MIT Recreational Sports offers Levels 1 – 5 of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. The courses are based on a logical progression that helps swimmers of all ages and varying abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. The pre-requisite for each level is the successful demonstration of the skills from the previous level (except for Level 1 in which individuals need to be at least 5 years old).

Youth/Family Swim LessonsMIT Recreational Sports is an Authorized Provider of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program. Instructors are certified by the American Red Cross to instruct swimming and water safety. The courses offer a comprehensive and developmentally appropriate swim program that teaches your child and you how to swim skillfully and safely. Membership Eligibility

The Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER) invites you to explore the opportunities available through involvement with MIT Recreational Sports. Through the offering of diverse programs and services DAPER encourages

community by promoting the dynamic connection between mind and body. With over 200 programs, services and events throughout the year, there is something for everyone.

Walk-InPlease visit the Main Desk in the Zesiger Center or Alumni/Wang Center to sign up in person for programs and classes. Access ProceduresMembers: Please show appropriate photo ID and swipe your DAPER membership card or turn in a valid day pass to access facilities. Must be 18 or with an adult. Guests: Guests/ Non-members must purchase a day pass to use the facilities unless registered for a program at a listed non-member rate. Please present a photo ID in order to obtain a temporary pass; the photo ID will be returned when the temporary pass is returned. Be sure to hold onto your pass—a $15 fee applies to lost passes and passes that are not returned before closing. Students may obtain day passes at a discounted rate with a valid student ID.
