Promise of Sustainability

• Key to addressing sustainability is re-defining it:

“Up until now, we have considered aspects of sustainability – climate,energy, water, food, poverty, and social development – in isolation.

“The Sloan Sustainability Initiative is developing an integrated framework to consider the system-wide dynamics of human society along with the tools and methodologies for measuring and monitoring sustainability efforts and their applications.”

Initiative Objectives

• Develop cutting-edge sustainability management tools• Build deeper understanding, through research, of how firms can:

– Operate in sustainable ways AND– Play a positive role in environmental regeneration and support of

human welfare• Prepare students with skills to lead in a resource-sensitive world• Create community that includes, engages, motivates and

Initial areas of focus:

• Global climate change and energy systems – How can we change human systems and activities to reduce global

warming?– How can existing businesses be redesigned? New ones built?

• Global justice and economic development: – How do we direct economic development to distribute benefits more

equitably and avoid damaging social/political/environmental systems? – What opportunities can profit-oriented companies pursue here? – What evidence do we have that this works?

S-Lab: Philosophy & pedagogy

• Systems view

– Sustainable ecologically, economically, socially, politically, and personally

– Problems and crises in each of these domains are symptoms of the same underlying system.

• Active learning

– Project-based learning, working with companies and organizations on semester-long projects

– Simulations, “buzz groups”, cases, presentations, and guest speakers.• Methodologies and Tools

– Working to develop, test, and aid implementation of systematic approaches backed by empirical data
