Tunnel‟s Ring Installation

One ring consists of 7 segments and 1 key segment.

Total ring that will be installed from Semantan North Portal to Pasar Seni:

Northbound : 1846 rings

Southbound : 1837 rings

Best record : 9 rings/day (14 July 2013)

Tunnel‟s Ring Installation

Steps in ring installation:

Shoving

until reaches

distance of 1.4 m

Transferred segment

into the tail skin using segment magazine

Fixed segment by

using segment erector

Thrust cylinder will

push segment

Segment will be

bolted to tighten its position

Check „Steps & Lips‟ and tail skin

clearance

VMT: TBM‟s Guidance System

Unlike cars, TBM need to have a guidance system to ensure the TBM is always follow design tunnel alignment (DTA).

TBM used a guidance system called VMT.

1. Horizontal & vertical deviations (mm) 2. Horizontal & vertical tendencies (mm/m) 3. Chainage of front reference point (m) 4. Current advance number 5. Graphical representation of TBM. 6. Roll (mm/m). 7. Absolute pitch (mm/m). 8. Intensity of laser hitting the target. 9. Emitting intensity of laser in percent. 10. Actual computer date and time. 11. Displays for communication programs. 12. Name of project. 13. Shows the operating mode (advance, ring erection). 14. Area reserved for special project informations. 15. Function keys. 16. “Dialog Box”- Window for messages. 17. Last measurement of TBM position was made.

Other than technical skills, what else?

Communication Skills

Learn on how to communicate with workers from China

China People: Mostly cannot speak English

Learn to communicate with other staff professionally.

Time Management

Task given by SV & internship task (logbook etc.)

Prepare to-do list every day

Complete task with high priority first

Conclusions & Recommendations

Student Industrial Training is a good program to expose students to the real working-based situation.

Student will be more well-rounded; learn theoretical knowledge at campus and hands-on knowledge during internship.

Students are able to develop their soft skills; communication, critical thinking, time management etc.

Page 27: MMC-GAMUDA KVMRT TUNNELING WORKS

Conclusions & Recommendations

Things that could be improved by UTP:

Problem: Students having problem with last-minute amendment by CSIMAL.

Possible Solution: Finalize all things before conduct internship‟s briefing.

Page 28: MMC-GAMUDA KVMRT TUNNELING WORKS

Conclusions & Recommendations

Things that could be improved by Host Company:

Problem: Battery charging area produce unpleasant smell.

Possible Solution: Build wall-like structure to barricade those area.
