Sound and Light Show

At the center of what has become a multi-faceted riverfront business

is a world-renowned Sound and Light Show begun in the early 1960s. The actual program has changed little over the years and is still relevant: Indian stories and legends, a spoken history of Moab pioneers and their conflict with Moab Native Americans, and finally a discussion of geology, the natural wonder of the canyons and patriotism. From the lounge of a 144-seat motorized boat, the stage is southeastern Utah’s night sky, 300 to 500-foot canyon walls and the mighty Colorado River. Most people take

advantage of a Dutch oven dinner at Canyonlands By Night’s facility north of town prior to the boat’s departure at dusk. For the three-mile trip up river, a knowledgeable host, points out faces and images nature has carved throughout the canyon, repeating and inventing stories with intelligence and humor. It’s a friendly, relaxing ride; often there are beaver, goats and mule deer about. Always there are waterfowl, including the graceful Blue Heron. The end of the ride up river marks the beginning of the recorded program, the brainchild of Weldon Wynne, a Texan who once ran a light

show at Paladora State Park in the Panhandle. “He decided he wanted to do something here,” Preston Paxman relates. “He went back to Texas, built a boat and returned to Moab. We’ve gone through several boats since then, but the show has continued.” Two Moab residents bought the business in 1976 and the business has grown to provide several different tours to thousands of visitors every year. Canyonlands By Night and Day remains a family owned company, and you’ll feel the difference the moment you step through the door.

In Southern Utah, exploring the beautiful area surrounding Moab and telling the history of the land is more than an inter-est— it’s our passion. We’re delighted to see our commitment come to life each and every day, in the smiles, discovery and laughter of our guests. Join us as we celebrate the wonders of the desert and make unforgettable family memories.

Scenic FlightSouthern Utah is filled with majes-tic beauty and a scenic flight is a great way to see it all.

The drive from Salt Lake City to Moab (240 miles) is rated “scenic” on the road maps, as is the drive from Denver to Moab (325 miles).

US Airways now provides daily scheduled flights between Moab, Utah and Salt Lake City. Booking an airline to Salt Lake City, with a connecting

flight on US Airways directly to Moab may be the most convenient way to get to Moab. Plus, there often seem to be “bargain” airfares to Salt Lake City from many parts of the country. Online travel sites such as Travelocity and Expedia now list the US Airways connecting flights to Moab in their flight directories.

Also, major airlines provide daily flights from both Denver and Phoenix to Grand Junction, Colorado, an easy and scenic two-hour drive from Moab. From the airport in Grand Junction, just as in Salt Lake City, shuttle services provide daily scheduled service to Moab. Rental cars are available at the Grand Junction airport, as well.

Renting a car at the airport in either Denver or Salt Lake City may be a less expensive alternative for two or more. The drive from Salt Lake City to Moab (240 miles) is rated “scenic” on the road maps, as is the drive from Denver to Moab (325 miles). Particularly if you are planning to rent a car, check airfares into both Salt Lake City and Denver, since driving times are similar and both routes are worth seeing.

In addition to connecting air service and rental car services, there is direct shuttle service (usually 15 passenger vans) scheduled daily between the airport in Salt Lake City and Moab, a four-hour scenic drive.

However you get to Moab, relax and get ready for what is truly an experience of a lifetime!

Ways to Travel

how to get here

I have a favorite website that I consult before every trip: www.onebag.com.

One Bag is a noncommercial labor of love created by Rick Dyment, a frequent traveler who Time magazine called the “go-light guru.” On the One Bag site I have found a continually updated wealth of practical and specific information on the art of traveling light, which is, as Dyment puts it, “going pretty much anywhere, for an indefinite length of time, with a single carry-on–sized bag.” You should check out his website for help on packing.

To be prepared for your trips, I’ve included a quick lists.

Multi-Day Trips:

place 4x4 as you are down in the canyons looking at the tremendous spires above. The last section of Canyonlands is called the Maze. The Maze is a remote area that offers back country access only.

Dead Horse State Park is on the way to the Island in the Sky section of Canyonlands National Park and is not to be missed! Many refer to it as the “little Grand Canyon” for it’s beautiful view of the Colorado River below it’s dramatic 2,000ft. cliffs.

The Manti-La Sal National Forest is a great way to cool-off during the hot summer days. Spending an afternoon at one of the many lakes or taking

a drive is a great way to enjoy the mountain. Try the La Sal Mountain Loop road for a easy side trip into the mountains (takes 2.5hrs).

The Colorado River Scenic Byway 128 was named one of the top 10 short scenic byways in all of America by Reader’s Digest. This 35 mile trip is an excellent place for photography and sightseeing. Don’t forget to see the famous Fisher Towers along the way. Or take a side trip to the quaint town of Castle Valley.

The Potash Scenic Byway 279 affords guests with wonderful views of Indian Petroglyphs, as well as rock climbing areas. Potash also provides BLM

regulated camping areas along the river. Drive a little further and a sign indicating Dinosaur Tracks is a great place to let the kids explore.

The above mentioned places are just a few of the highlights of Moab. Trails crisscross over much of the land and many place are left to be explored. So many opportunities lie in the possibility of this magnificent place. There’s something for everyone!

If you have trouble finding something to do, then come to our office located North of the Colorado River Bridge and we’ll help point you in the right direction.

Sometimes when searching the internet on what to do, the hunt

can be overwhelming. To ease the search, we’ve complied a list of the top things to do and see while in Moab.

When coming to Moab, the most popular things to see are it’s

natural wonders that are highlighted in it’s two National Parks. Arches National Park is an excellent place to

explore, hike and take photographs. Canyonlands National Park is such a large park, that it would take many years to see the entire park. Canyonlands National Park is divided into three sections by the Colorado and Green Rivers. The most popular section is Island in the Sky, it was given it’s unique name due to the fact that you sit high on a mesa and look down into the many wonderful geological features. The second most popular section is The Needles and it is a great
