Mobile Digital TV - Basics

n Transition to digital TV has opened 19.2 megabits of bandwidth for local TV broadcast operators

n Mobile DTV uses freed spectrum to transmit programming directly to mobile devicesØ A 416x240 Mobile DTV signal requires only 2-3 megabitsØ An HD signal requires 12-15 megabitsØ An SD signal takes 4-6 megabitsØ An SD signal takes 4-6 megabits

n Advances in MPEG2 encoding will allow more channels to fit into the same spectrum Ø Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) is confident broadcasters will be able to offer an HD [channel] with a couple of SD multicasts and still have room to do two or three reasonable quality mobile broadcasts

n Enabling Mobile DTV broadcast to existing systems typically costs $75,000-$150,000 and takes 1 technician 1-2 hours
