Introduction Cognos was created to work with Internet Explorer. However, as Microsoft has improved its security

with each release, Cognos features are affected. In order to ensure Cognos maintains proper

functionality, there are some simple steps to follow. After Microsoft or the College pushes out updates

to Internet Explorer, it is possible that these settings will need to be modified again.

Steps for updating Internet Explorer Settings There are several places in Internet Options that need to be modified to modify the default settings put

in place by Microsoft to accommodate reporting using Cognos within Internet Explorer. Please follow

the below steps closely to ensure your browser settings are appropriately set.

1. Log in to Cognos using Internet Explorer

2. Click on Tools from the browser menu choices (looks like a gear)

3. Click on Internet Options

4. Click on the Security Tab

5. Click on the Trusted Sites green checkmark

6. Click on the word “Sites”

7. You should see the Add this website to the zone: with the Cognos link listed, click on Add or type https://reporting.battery.cofc.edu

8. Click Close

9. Just above the Custom level button is a checkbox to Enable Protected Mode. Please check this box.

10. Click on Custom Level button just below the

trusted sites 11. In the top .Net Framework section, make sure the

XPS filter is set for Enable 12. Scroll down to Downloads section

13. Make sure the File Downloaded option is Enabled

14. Scroll down under the Miscellaneous section

15. Make sure Allow Websites to open windows without address or status bars is set on Enabled 16. Make sure the Display Mixed Content is Enabled

17. Make sure Launching applications and unsafe files is set to Prompt

18. Make sure the Use Pop-up Blocker is set to Disable

19. Make sure Allow Programmatic clipboard access is set to Enabled (If you are an author, this will hide the pop up that opens every time you open a Studio and it asks you if you want to allow clipboard access.)

20. Scroll down to the Scripting section

21. Make sure the XSS filter is disabled

22. Choose OK to apply

23. Click on the Privacy tab

24. About ¾ of the way down the tab, there is a Pop-Up Blocker checkbox; make sure it is unchecked.

25. Click Apply to enforce your changes from both tabs immediately

Notes about downloading a file into another format When you are exporting a file to Excel, your View Downloads window will appear a bit different from the

older versions of Internet Explorer.

Just like in the older versions of IE and when you open

an attachment from Outlook, you will have the option

to Open or Save the file you have downloaded.

Internet Explorer will give the file a randomly

generated alpha numeric name and store a temporary

copy in the default location, which is in the Downloads

folder of your My Folders.

If this window does not pop up automatically, chances

are you have missed a step from above. Check your
