Questions 33 40 are based on the following passage.

As members of the public, we should be responsible and take care of the amenities

provided for our convenience, and not abuse them. Vandals cause much damage to the

public property. Public telephones have always been the favourite targets for vandals.

They damage the telephones in their attempt to steal the coins, or they purposely destroy

them for their own selfish and twisted pleasure. It is very frustrating when you have to

make an essential telephone call and you cannot find a single phone which is in working

    order.

Apart from destroying telephones, some vandals also leave their marks on

elevators, especially those in blocks of flats. Graffiti is scratched all over the lift, light

bulbs are stolen and control buttons are pried out.

Another public amenity that is often misused by people is the litter bin. They

make the bin a sort of basketball target, trying to throw their plastic wrappers, paper,

drink cans and so on into the bin from a distance. More often than not, their aim is bad

and the litter is scattered all around the bin, making the place unkempt and untidy.

Besides, this litter will attract flies, rats, stray dogs and cats which will further make the

    place unhygienic.

In some countries, surveillance cameras are installed in public places to deter

vandals and other criminals. These electronic eyes have proved to be quite effective in

    preventing vandalism.
