The aim of this module is to enable students to develop a deep and broad understanding of their MA Project, and ability to apply, an investigative, developmental approach to solving complex problems. The module will give students the opportunity to reflect on their research in previous modules, to further develop their ability to plan and execute independent research and enhance their personal and/or professional development.

MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES By engaging successfully with this module a student will be able to

Plan and carry out postgraduate level research that identifies significant opportunities for creative design practice.

Demonstrate a deep understanding of the broad context of their projected MA Project.

Plan and apply investigative and evaluative approaches to development of concepts.

Develop and present a body of creative design work to a professional standard. INDICATIVE CONTENT

Through tutorials and work-check presentations, students will receive support from tutors who will assist them to identify key areas of knowledge for their individual projects.

A programme of and seminars will address subjects such as:

Principles for open-ended design practice, for example how to proceed in the absence of concrete goals.

Strategies for innovation informed by research.

Concept generation techniques.

Communication in a professional context. LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT - STRATEGY AND METHODS Students will be supported in their learning, to achieve the above outcomes, in the following ways

lectures and seminars,

structured group activities such as critiques of work in progress,

studio ‘brainstorming’ events,

via Blackboard and social media platforms. Students will carry out a self-directed research and design project; an investigation which informs and clearly articulates how their project can be further developed and brought to a conclusion within the MA Project module. Students will have access to a variety of tutors and will be part of a tutorial group led by a subject specific tutor who oversees their progress through the module. Research and creative work will be supported through these tutorials groups. Formal work-check presentations, involving the whole MA programme cohort, will monitor project plans and progress at strategic points of the module and review project outcomes, providing students with provide rich in-depth opportunities for feedback on their progress whilst at the same time allowing the course team to ‘build a picture’ of students work in preparation for the module assessment. Students will be able to use the full range of studio, workshop, ICT and Learning Centre resources available to them and they will be expected to use digital media for presenting work. Assessment will be based on project work that will result in a refined project proposal for the MA Project Module, a supporting research report along with production of creative work suitable to the students’ discipline. The format, scope and content for these will be defined by the subject matter of the project and practice in the student’s design discipline. Critiques will be held at work-check presentations to allow tutors to test the students’ understanding of their project work and the material that they have developed. ASSESSMENT TASK INFORMATION

FEEDBACK Students will receive feedback on their performance in the following ways: Students will be given feedback in several ways: Formative feedback will be given during and following work-checks, allowing discussion and development of common issues. Students will have regular tutorials during the project at which they will receive formative feedback and guidance on their progress and. After summative assessment, each student will have an individual tutorial at which their assessment is discussed and plans for future work developed.
