Flame Test Lab DiscussionThe different color flames you will see in the

“Flame Test” lab are caused by different metals in the solutions.

Remember, most of the elements on the periodic table are metals.

Metals are listed 1st when naming compounds.Non-metals are found on

the right-hand side of the table.

Lab: “Flame Tests”Safety Items

We will be using bunsen burners so hair must be TIED BACK!

The lights in the lab will be turned OFF so that you can see the flame colors more easily – be careful and be descriptive!

Don’t burn the wooden splint – you only want to see the color made by the metal solution as excited electrons fall back to lower energy states.

Put the splint into the “used splint beaker” when you’re done with the test.

Lab: “Flame Tests”Be a real scientist! If you’re not sure about the

unknowns, go back and test them side-by-side with the sample that you think it might be!

In the Analysis section, question #1: Organizing Data, just write “see data table” for your answer.

Remember that all lab questions need to be answered in COMPLETE SENTENCES!

Be safe and haveCompleted lab will be due next time!

Movie: “Hunting the Elements”

You do not have to take notes on the movie, but I do expect you to stay awake and pay attention…
