ROLE OF ENZYMES
• Characteristics1) are proteins 2) Are catalyst 3) End in –ASE (Ex: Amylase in saliva)
•Catalyst = speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction
ACTIVE SITE
•Substrate = material on which enzyme acts
•Active Site = site of chemical reaction between (btw) substrate & enzyme
ENZYMES AS ROBOTS
•Enzymes perform the SAME reaction over and over again •The enzyme is NEVER altered! Only the substrate.
INHIBITORS
• Inhibitor = molecule that binds to enzymes & decreases their activity•Competitive Inhibitor = binds to active site of enzyme & prevents substrate binding
• Ex. Chemotherapy
ENZYMES IN YOUR BODY
• Enzymes found in saliva:
1. Amylase - help break down carbs
2. Protease - help break down protein
3. Lipase - help break down fats
ENZYMES IN PRODUCTS
• Laundry Detergent- (Tide, Arm & Hammer, Oxy Clean) contains protease, amaylase and mannanase
• Frizz Ease- contains dismutase; converts superoxide and protons.
REMINDER: SUMMARY
•Draw horizontal line at end of notes•Write “Summary”•Write 3-5 sentences about specific things you learned about enzymes•Use COMPLETE sentences
CREATE AN ENZYME
1. Create an enzyme that would help you in your life. (Example: helps you finish a chore in 1 minute)
2. Name the enzyme (remember end in –ASE)3. Draw a picture of the enzyme. Use at least 3
colors.4. Write 2 complete sentences explaining how the
enzyme will help you out.
***Worth 4 stamps…remember you can earn a 5th stamp for extra credit if you create a WOW assignment***
ENZYME READING ASSESSMENT
Instructions:
***Do NOT write on the handout***
1. The provided reading is divided into 4 sections. Read each one. 2. Summarize each section using a 7-9 word complete
sentence. (you should have 4 short summaries) 3. After you complete the 4 sections, summarize the
entire passage using 13-15 words. (5 summaries total)
**THIS DOES NOT TAKE ANY TALKING**
• Monday, September 9, 2013
1. What suffix do enzymes end in? (Hint: 3 letters)2. In a chemical reaction which component is
altered? (Hint: labeled diagram below)
WARM UP
WARM UP

•Draw an energy hill diagram. Label the reactants, products, activation energy, and enzyme line. Use your notes or the provided textbook.
ENZYME LAB
1)Title your page (spare sheet of paper) Enzyme Lab
2)Paste the table on your sheet. Fill in the table as your complete each task.
3)Answer the questions on your lab sheet under the table using complete sentences on your spare sheet of paper.
