Monitor
• A monitor is an electronic visual display for computers.
• The monitor displays the video and graphics
information generated by the computer through the video card.
• Monitors are very similar to televisions but display information at a much higher quality.
What is a monitor?
• Monitors come in two major types – CRT and LCD.
• CRT (cathode –ray tube) monitors look much like traditional televisions and are very deep in size. They are usually bulky and heavy.
• LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) monitors are energy efficient, compact thin and lightweight while offering equivalent, if not better, graphics quality. LCD monitor have a longer life-span, less heat output and save on space.

CRT LCD
Size• Most monitors range in size from 15" to
21" or more. This size is a diagonal measurement from one corner of the screen to the other.
•A computer monitor is made of pixels (short for "picture element"). Monitor resolution is measured in pixels, width by height. 640 x 480 resolution means that the screen is 640 pixels wide by 480 tall.•A pixel is the smallest element of a video image. Each pixel must be made up of three separate colors, there are smaller red, green, and blue dots on the screen that make up the image.

Video Card
A video card is an expansion card whose function is to generate output images to a display.
Other modern high performance video cards are used for graphically demanding purposes, such as PC games.
A modern video card consists of a printed circuit board on which the components are mounted. These include:
Graphics Processing Unit - a dedicated processor optimized for accelerating graphics.
Video BIOS - contains the basic program.
Video memory RAMDAC - converts digital signals to analog signals for use by a computer display that uses analog inputs such as CRT displays.
Analog-based standard adopted in the late 1980s designed for CRT displays, also called VGA connector. Some problems of this standard are electrical noise, image distortion and sampling error evaluating pixels.
Video Graphics Array (VGA)
Digital-based standard designed for displays such as flat-panel displays (LCDs, plasma screens, wide high-definition television displays) and video projectors.
Digital Visual Interface (DVI)
Included to allow the connection with televisions, DVD players, video recorders and video game consoles. They often come in two 9-pin mini-DIN connector variations.

Conections
Analog system with lower resolution; it uses the RCA connector.
Composite video
It has three cables, each with RCA connector (YCBCR for digital component, or YPBPR for analog component); it is used in projectors, DVD players and some televisions.
Component video
A connector that provides two DVI or VGA outputs on a single connector.
